British Tabloid Withdraws False Story on Blackwater
The withdrawal that proves factual accuracy STILL
has some role in journalism
Moyock, NC -- The UK-based Daily Mail newspaper,
in acknowledgment of factual inaccuracies and
mistaken assumptions, has withdrawn its recent
story entitled "The picture that proves 'torture
flights' are STILL landing in the UK."
Although the bogus story should never have appeared
in the first place, the Daily Mail deserves recognition
for acting responsibly in withdrawing the story
and promptly removing it from its website.
The false story in question alleged that a photo
of an aircraft landing on June 10, 2007 at Royal
Air Force base Mildenhall constituted "proof"
that Blackwater USA and its sister companies conduct
what the paper referred to as "CIA torture
flights."
To be clear, Blackwater and its affiliates do
not now and have never conducted so-called "rendition
flights," as the transport of detainees or
terror suspects to interrogation centers has become
known.
The CASA 212 aircraft in question did land at
Mildenhall for fuel following its trans-Atlantic
flight. The flight did not originate at Camp Peary,
a military base in Virginia, nor did it even land
there. Rather, the aircraft departed Blackwater's
facility in Moyock, North Carolina, as documented
by the flight plan filed prior to departure.
The aircraft will be providing logistic support
to uniformed U.S. military forces overseas. It
should not be surprising that an aircraft flying
under contract to the United States military would
be met by U.S. military personnel upon landing
at a military facility in the United Kingdom.
Blackwater hopes the debunking of this latest
conspiracy theory will encourage the media to
report on the true nature of our work, providing
training for military members and law enforcement
and protecting U.S. government civilians overseas.
We are proud of this work and proud to be supporting
our nation.
