Professional Standards And Training Opportunities
The Blackwater K9 training compound is situated on the 7000 acre Blackwater USA training facility located in Moyock NC. The facility is designed to fully accommodate all training needs related to Patrol/Utility, Explosive and Narcotic detection for Law Enforcement and Military Work Dogs.
Blackwater USA's standard of excellence mandates professional and superior performance by all the employees of Blackwater K-9.
The training staff is comprised of seasoned law enforcement K-9 trainers and handlers offering a total 110 years of combined K-9 experience. Managers of the training staff are all certified Master Trainers by the North American Police Work Dog Association or the Virginia Police Work Dog Association.
Serving as adjunct instructors, active duty law enforcement K-9 trainers and handlers provide current and relevant experience to the Blackwater K-9 training operation.
Blackwater K-9 handlers who deploy on assignment are independent contractors and must have a minimum of three (3) years prior military or sworn law enforcement experience as a K-9 handler.
Blackwater dogs go through an extensive testing, training and certification process. They must they be able to perform the mission they are trained for while often operating in diverse and sometimes hostile environments yet possess the ability to function socially among people.
Blackwater dogs must meet and maintain performance standards that exceed those established by the North American Police Work Dog Association. Additionally Blackwater K-9 provides training for the Odor Recognition Proficiency Test which is required by many United Stated Federal Law Enforcement Agencies such as the Drug Enforcement Administration and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
Blackwater K-9 provides training in accordance with FM 3-19.17, DA PAM 190-12, and OPNAVINST 5585.2
Blackwater K-9 is licensed by the Drug Enforcement Administration, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services.
Pseudo scent training aids are not used. Utilizing actual scent compounds. Explosive Detector Dogs must be capable of detecting a broad range of explosives which include but are not limited to black powder, smokeless powder, dynamite, C-4 or Flex-X, TNT, military dynamite, primer (DET) cord, surries or Water gel and Semtex.
Blackwater's training sites offer tremendous diversification affording
wide-ranging environmental acclimation for dogs and handlers. Sites include
urban areas which allow for live fire situations, buildings, and mutable
vehicles, vast areas with varying terrain features for conducting tracks,
tactical exercises and searches, aircraft and ship simulators to conduct
K-9 maritime operations.
