Tactical Weekly
Readers;
Well we've passed the Summer Solstice and are heading full blown into summer.
I've included an interesting piece on a proposed solution for UN peacekeeping, albeit controversial, along with some good news from Iraq as locals are turning in more weapons and opportunities for international development are opening up.
We found a new fitness site that has a bunch of great information about exercises and nutrition. I recommend you take the time not just to read this week's articles but to also surf around.
Lastly, some good news from both coasts with successes against drug gangs.
As always, be safe.

Taliban Militants Take Over Afghan Villages
June 16, 2008
Fox News.com

A big push in southern Afghanistan by the Taliban. This may be a good indication they are feeling the pressure and this is their attempt to fight back and show they are still a credible force and threat.
KANDAHAR, Afghanistan - Hundreds of Taliban fighters took over several villages in southern Afghanistan on Monday just outside the region's largest city, and NATO and Afghan forces were redeploying to meet the threat, officials said.

Active Shooters and SWAT
Doctrine now says that first responders should engage the shooter not wait for SWAT, but that does not mean SWAT has no role to play in ending the carnage.
June 11, 2008
Police Mag.com
Robert O'Brien
Overview of the development of active shooter programs.
Since Columbine, law enforcement active shooter response has evolved from surround and wait for SWAT to first responder rapid intervention. My last two SWAT columns have been devoted to the discussion of immediate intervention by first responders acting alone. Now, let's discuss the role of SWAT during these incidents.
In Columbine's wake, the National Tactical Officers Association (NTOA) developed the rapid deployment first-responder team tactic currently in use throughout the nation. But in many, if not most, departments, officers from the SWAT team conduct the active shooter training program.

In Iraq's Oil Fields, Signs of Hope Finally Are Emerging
June 20, 2008
USA Today.com
Charles Levinson
Great news from Iraq as the government anticipates major foreign oil companies to sign minor contracts as the first step toward bigger foreign investments. Expanded oil exploration and production could go a long way in reducing the current price of oil and gas.
BASRA, Iraq - In the oil-rich deserts of southern Iraq, a rusted pipeline snakes through piles of burning garbage, lakes of raw sewage and slums controlled by hostile militias.
Mundal Mayali, a local councilman, points to the pipeline and sighs. If oil infrastructure like this were modernized and the country's vast untapped reserves of crude explored, then this port city of Basra - and indeed much of Iraq - would flourish, he says.

While not really a tactical article, I thought this was important enough to include as a bonus for our military folks as a tool to help them cope with continued deployments and separations during the GWOT.
A new social networking Web site has been approved by Pentagon officials to help service members and their families and friends stay in touch.
Families can get their own sites for free, and keep them as long as the sponsor is on active duty. The nonprofit network, Websites for Heroes, is funded by donations from individuals and corporations.

Change in tactics to provide more security for convoys. This move should decrease casualties.
The Army and Marine Corps are equipping thousands of new medium and heavy cargo trucks to carry .50-caliber machine guns and even heavier defensive weapons. The trucks will be able to move without armed escorts, said Navy Petty Officer 1st Class Sarah Langdon, spokeswoman for Multi-National Force-Iraq.
"The upgrades to the trucks bring along the capability of adding more weapons," Langdon said. "If you are going somewhere where you need it, you can just throw up a .50-cal."

Tactical Equipment Evaluation
NIMS/ICS Resource DVD
For decades now the fire service has been managing large fire grounds through use of the Incident Management System. Within the past few years - since the attacks of nine eleven - it's been realized that such management can be applied to all serious disaster scenes. But, truth be told, the fire services, who have the most experience, simply don't have time to stop and train everyone else in public safety in how to use and work under the system. Enter the NICS/ICS Pro Edition training DVD. Distributed by Advanced Safety Products, Inc (+ASP), the training DVD provides basic training in how to use the NIMS system but also provides testimonials from those scene commanders who have used it in real disasters.

"The Last Patriot" by Brad Thor
I love to read. But there are some authors that I simply refuse to read anymore. Some because they constantly provide new ideas and creative ways for terrorists to attack our country or our citizens; others because they put in WAY too much descriptive detail and far too little story line. But I met Brad Thor before I ever read any of his books; then I read the books he had out; and with "The Last Patriot" I was honored to get a pre-release copy. I consumed the book in less than four days start to finish. Brad Thor's main character / hero, Scot Harvath proves all too human; all too capable; and more motivated than most men I've met who wear a uniform. Let me give you an overview of the storyline and some insights into why I enjoyed this book so much.

Strength Training - Workouts for Size & Strength!
Shapefit.com
Here is a great site for all sorts of fitness needs. I linked to a page on strength training that provides an excellent overview of strength training including links to a whole range of exercises.
What is Strength Training?
Strength Training is when you perform exercises with resistance to build muscle mass and strength. Strength training is not running on a treadmill, riding a stationary bike, or using an elliptical machine. Although those types of aerobic machines use "resistance" to increase your workout intensity, it's not the same as strength training. The most common form of strength training is lifting weights. Weight lifting can include free weights, machines, elastic bands, body weight or any other form of resistance.
