Readers;
Hope those of you that qualified, had a great Father's Day, and had a chance to spend some time with your kids.
We have some good news here in the U.S. Violent crime rates are down and efforts to limit the growth of gangs continue to show signs of improvement. In addition, the President took a step toward limiting illegal immigration by requiring federal contractors to certify the status of their employees. On the other hand, the Supreme Court dealt the administration a blow with the decision on 12 June awarding unlawful combatants the right of habeus corpus and allowing them the right to appeal to U.S. civilian courts to challenge their indefinite imprisonment without charges. Here is a good link on historical habeus corpus cases:
http://www.uscourts.gov/outreach/topics/habeascorpus_landmark.htm
You will also find some articles from earlier this year detailing the training methods of the drug cartels and how dangerous they truly are. Finally, you will read a moving story of how we here at Blackwater took the time to recognize the sacrifices of some of our own.
Thanks again for your patronage of the BTW and for your steady stream of helpful comments and suggestions.

Drug cartels operate training camps near Texas border just inside Mexico
March 30, 2009
Dallas Morning News.com
Alfredo Corchado
Part I - An article about the true nature of the Mexican drug cartels - they are truly not just criminals, and as such they are a military not criminal problem. Another target in the GWOT.
CAMARGO, Mexico - The ranch near this border community is isolated, desolate and laced by arroyos - an ideal place, experts say, for training drug cartel assassins.
Mexican drug cartels have conducted military-style training camps in at least six such locations in northern Tamaulipas and Nuevo León states, some within a few miles of the Texas border, according to U.S. and Mexican authorities and the printed testimony of five protected witnesses who were trained in the camps.

Supreme Court ruling cripples Guantanamo trials
June 12, 2008
Times Online
Tim Reid
A major blow in the GWOT. This view from the UK gives a different spin than that of the U.S. press. Interesting that the court's majority (5-4 decision) ignored their own precedent from WWII in Ex Parte Quirin, 317 U.S. 1 (1942), denying captured German saboteurs habeus corpus to civilian courts.
The future of President Bush's controversial military trial system for terror suspects held at Guantanamo Bay has been dealt a potentially terminal blow by the US Supreme Court.

Bush signed the order Friday and the White House announced the order Monday.

Cities welcome law making gang-related graffiti a crime
June 12, 2008
SeattleTimes.com
Christine Clarridge
Great news from the Pacific Northwest on the fight against gangs. While it seems innocuous, marking territory through graffiti is an important part of the gang culture. Making it a crime is the first step to reigning in gang behavior. Let's hope other parts of the country takes notice.
The owners of a small Rainier Valley auto-glass shop keep four shelves stocked with the paint they use to cover the graffiti that frequently appears outside the store.
The building gets tagged all the time, complained Annie Zhang and Gordon Situ of Golden Auto Glass. They go out and paint over the symbols to keep up the neighborhood's appearance, only to get hit again.
"Sometimes next day," Situ said. "Sometimes next week."

DHS Wants to Vet Small Aircraft Before They Enter U.S. Airspace

HLS is considering new procedures to provide safety from aviation threats.
About 400 general aviation flights - ranging in size from small Cessnas to 747s - enter U.S. airspace each day.
Despite long-time fears that these non-commercial flights may come bearing a weapon of mass destruction, the federal government still knows little about who and what are onboard the aircraft prior to landing, said Domestic Nuclear Detection Office director Vayl Oxford.

Taser project to equip each patrol officer
June 8, 2008
Columbia Tribune.com
Joe Meyer
While not a new innovation, the article details the availability of federal grants to equip officers with Tasers.
Funds from a federal grant will allow the Columbia Police Department to almost double the number of Tasers available to police and move closer to the goal of putting one of the devices into the hands of every patrol officer.
The nearly $33,000 grant is from the U.S. Department of Justice 2007 Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant, which police and the Boone County Sheriff's Department jointly sought, Columbia police Capt. Mike Martin said. The purchase was approved Monday by the Columbia City Council.

Tactical Equipment Evaluation
The Grip Pod
Long time readers of my reviews know that I'm in favor of any product that performs as it is advertised; serves the purpose it was designed for; and increases the versatility of any given weapon. Many of today's close quarters weapons are equipped with vertical foregrips while others have folding bipods so they can double as close quarters fire support or precision weapons. The Grip Pod fulfills both functions in a simple compact unit. Let's take a look.

Recreational Equipment Review
The FBI: 100 Years of Unofficial History
The Federal Bureau of Investigation... considered by many to be the premier law enforcement agency in our country today. Where did it come from? Why was it established? What does it do? Who provides it authority to do so? When I was first approached to review what I saw as essentially a history book I wasn't too enthused. I mean, that's not my idea of recreational reading. But I kept an open mind and I'm kinda glad I did. This book proved interesting in many ways for anyone who serves (or has served) in law enforcement.

Bicycling Riding for Better Health and a Better Environment
Physical Fitness Articles.net
Ben Anton
As the price of gas continues to climb, people are looking for alternatives, with some dragging out their old bicycles. Here is a good article about the benefits of bike riding, both fitness and environmental.
There are many obvious benefits to cycling that many people choose to ignore. Sure, it seems like it would be faster to drive to the store during dinner time rush hour, but is it really? Chances are it is not faster. In fact, you could probably get to your destination within a much shorter period of time if you took your bicycle than if you drove your vehicle. Many people who live in big cities are finding that taking their bicycle to work is actually faster than driving there.
