Readers;

Good news out west as we got permission to open our new training facility in San Diego, California. Providing our law enforcement and military professionals with more training facilities to use in the United States is a definite win in support of the Global War on Terror.

I continue to provide you with articles covering U.S. border control issues because you ask for it and we believe it's important to let people know about the deteriorating security situation on our southern border. Lots of news this week from Mexico.

As always, keep the comments coming, but remember our four core competencies are advanced tactical training, personnel services, logistics and innovation. If you have articles that you think will appeal to our readers, send me the link. I cannot guarantee they will be published, but will do my best if they are relevant and don't seem to be too self serving. It's also nice if you send your comments with subject lines and why you think the article would appeal to BTW readers. Remember if the articles are promoting your company, you have a chance to advertise in the BTW and reach our 60,000 plus subscribers.

Enjoy

Toll mounts in Mexico's drug war
President Felipe Calderon says the violence is one measure of success: It shows that the

More bad news from down south. At least it is starting to be reported as a war vice a criminal problem. Like the 12-step process, admission of a problem is the start on the road to rehabilitation.

TIJUANA -- Mexico is at war.

Helmeted army troops steer Humvees past strip malls in the border city of Nuevo Laredo, some of the 40,000 soldiers and 5,000 federal police officers President Felipe Calderon has deployed to secure large swaths of the country against entrenched drug traffickers.

Here is an interesting development on the southern border that may require a larger security requirement.

U.S. GULF OF MEXICO -- Eight miles north of the maritime border with Mexico, in waters a mile and a half deep, Shell Oil Co. is constructing the most ambitious offshore oil platform ever attempted in the Gulf of Mexico.

As tall as the Eiffel Tower, the floating production facility will be anchored to the ocean floor by moorings spanning an area the size of downtown Houston. Slated to begin operating late next year, this leviathan known as Perdido (or Lost) will cost billions and be capable of pumping 100,000 barrels of crude a day.

Should Students Be Allowed to Carry Firearms?

Viewpoint on 2nd amendment right to carry - even for students.

As Americans living in what is generally a safe society, we have come to rely on our law enforcement and fire/EMS professionals to respond rapidly when our lives are in peril, and thus to keep us safe. However, as a police officer and an "insider", I also know that law enforcement is not always there when people are faced with life-threatening danger. Moreover, the sad reality is that many in my profession - who are also aware that law enforcement is MIA in too many extremely threatening situations - ironically are placing obstacles in the way of citizens who want to protect themselves when such danger risks their very lives.

A useful overview of trends in eyewear.

While the high death toll from roadside bombs in Iraq is well known, fragmentation explosions and blast effects are taking their toll among severe casualties. Frequent occurrences are eye injuries. According to Army medical records, 16% of the medical evacuations from combat zones since March 2003 have included serious eye injuries - compared to 9% in Vietnam and the 1990- 91 Gulf War. Yet, many of such eye injuries could be avoided with proper use of protective eyewear.

Great story about a proactive community looking after its citizens by doing a little emergency preparedness.

Senior citizens are responding in greater numbers than families to a local law enforcement and fire-rescue initiative to get people to carry medical information cards and emergency contact phone numbers, coordinators said.

The intent of the program called "in case of emergency," or ICE, is for people to keep pertinent medical information and phone numbers for family members on them at all times so that police officers and paramedics can be more effective at helping the ill and victims of car crashes and violent crimes.

BH SERPA Holster for TASER X26

I've been a TASER instructor for a few years now and I never could figure out why every holster I had seen for the TASERs - the M26 or the X26 - seemed designed specifically to make it difficult to get the TASER out for use. Naturally, one of the first things I did was call BlackHawk and ask when they'd have a SERPA holster available for the X26. "It's in the works," I was told. Well, it's not in the works anymore. I got my test sample a couple weeks ago and it wasn't quite what I expected. It performed exactly as I'd hoped, but looked different. I guess that's why I don't design things.

A Buck Pair

When I was in high school and The Dukes of Hazzard was all the rage, nearly every kid I knew wanted a "Buck knife" like Bo Duke's. I know I did. So when I was 18 I went out and bought one and still have it. A while later I found the same model but with plastic grips which made it lighter and easier to carry and it became one of my favorites. Of course, through the years Buck has continued to design and manufacture new knives. I recently realized that I have a pair of Buck Knives that often accompany me on my outdoor treks. Let me tell you a bit about them.

  Say What???

Many people have sayings that convey a lot of truth when you understand what is said and why. For example, "The older you get, the faster it (time) goes!"

When I was a young person I could not understand that saying. It just did not fit and it did not compute for me... Now I can say with clarity of understanding that not only do I understand it, I have experienced it, I believe it and I expound it!!!

Unfortunately, research finds these claims to not be true.
