TALLAHASSEE - Bipartisan anti-gang legislation is cruising through the legislature with virtually no opposition, even from civil liberties groups.

Here is a move forward in making Iraq self reliant, along with reducing the threat and subsequent causalities from IEDs.

The U.S. has taken the unprecedented -- and some would say questionable -- step of selling some of its most sophisticated counter-IED technology to the Iraqi government, equipping specialized police, military and interior ministry troops with electronic systems designed to detonate roadside bombs and jam triggering signals.

Wonderful news as we try to professionalize the Iraqi military and security forces. In addition to screening for criminal activity, biometric identification will stop payments to dead soldiers and policemen.

WASHINGTON, April 24, 2008 - The Iraqi government has expanded its use of biometric identification, a U.S. official in Iraq said yesterday.

While the biometric program was procured to screen for identification of the government's civilian employees, police and army, it has expanded to identify the deceased and screen for previous criminal activity, U.S. Army Lt. Col. John Velliquette Jr., Iraqi biometrics manager for the Coalition Police Assistance Training Team, said in a conference call with online journalists and "bloggers."

Tactical Equipment Evaluation

Hindi Duty Belt System

When I first became a cop, some 25+ years ago now (geez, I'm old), the placement of items on a duty belt was quite hap-hazard. The gun went in a specific spot, but everything else went wherever was comfortable. Very little guidance existed aside from the veterans who said, "This worked for me." Now, thanks to Officer Bob Hindi, there is a placement plan that is both ergonomic and supporting officer safety. I was, at first, overwhelmed by the time and research Hindi put into his system. I'll do my best to hit the high spots, whys and wherefores in this review.

The Walking Stick

I'll never forget the scene in "Robin Hood" when Robin fights John Little (who he comes to call Little John) with cudgels in the middle of a babbling brook. That Robin ends up "in the drink" a couple times is funny... and not. Those scenes got me thinking about the value of a walking stick though. Not only does it provide you additional support, but it can also a tool for self-defense, part of a shelter, or carry other items handy for hiking and/or backpacking in the great outdoors. Let's look at a few of them – including a VERY basic home made one – and what features are best to have.

  ANOTHER WEEK

Another week has hopped, skipped, jumped, dragged and flown by... Depending upon where you were and what you were doing at any particular time.

By the middle of my fourth day on the street I am looking for ways to keep my energy up and my perception sharp. I have used several things and several methods to achieve my goals... They usually work but some days it comes down to a dark chocolate bar and a good old Coca-Cola. Our outside temperatures the past two days were high 70's, low 80's and an hour directing traffic in a busy intersection is a job that wrings the moisture right out of you. I think most of mine went out through my whistle.
