CIVILIAN FRIENDS VS. PEACE KEEPER FRIENDS

I found a message in my e-mail and altered it somewhat to fit my observation of you...

CIVILIAN FRIENDS: Get upset if you're too busy to talk to them for a week.
PEACE KEEPER FRIENDS: Are glad to see you after years, and will happily carry on the same conversation you were having last time you met.

CIVILIAN FRIENDS: Never ask for food or drink.
PEACE KEEPER FRIENDS: May be the reason you have no food or drink.

CIVILIAN FRIENDS: Call your parents Mr. And Mrs.
PEACE KEEPER FRIENDS: Call your parents mom and dad.

CIVILIAN FRIENDS: Have never seen you cry.
PEACE KEEPER FRIENDS: Cry with you.

CIVILIAN FRIENDS: Borrow your stuff for a few days then give it back.
PEACE KEEPER FRIENDS: Keep your stuff so long they forget it's yours.

CIVILIAN FRIENDS: Know a few things about you.
PEACE KEEPER FRIENDS: Could write a book with direct quotes from you.

CIVILIAN FRIENDS: Will leave you behind if that's what the crowd is doing.
PEACE KEEPER FRIENDS: Will kick the whole crowds' behind that left you.

CIVILIAN FRIENDS: Would knock on your door.
PEACE KEEPER FRIENDS: Walk right in and say, "I'm home!"

CIVILIAN FRIENDS: Are for a while.
PEACE KEEPER FRIENDS: Are for life.

CIVILIAN FRIENDS: Have shared a few experiences...
PEACE KEEPER FRIENDS: Have shared a lifetime of experiences no Civilian
could ever dream of...

CIVILIAN FRIENDS: Will take your drink away if they think you've had
enough.
PEACE KEEPER FRIENDS: Will look at you stumbling all over the place and
carry you home or some other safe place and put you to bed.

CIVILIAN FRIENDS: Will talk crap to the person who talks crap about you.
PEACE KEEPER FRIENDS: Will not tolerate them for using your name in
vain.

CIVILIAN FRIENDS: Will ignore this.
PEACE KEEPER FRIENDS: Will forward this to their other Peace Keeper friends.

This morning (courtesy of
Assistant Chief Mike Williams, Chattanooga,
TN., in his newsletter)
I read an account of the experience of a police officer and his wife in Nashville
who had the difficult experience of giving birth to a child that could
not live because of physical defects.  They named him Jonathan Isaac...
(
Jonathan meaning God's gracious gift... Isaac meaning laughter.)
This precious child, Jonathan Isaac, lived three days... In those three
days the hospital set up a special room for them to be able to stay
with and hold their child...

Every one who could observe was astonished at the busy flow of police
officers who came to that room to see one of their own, share the
parents pain and touch their precious child.  The police officer father
said, "
I was overwhelmed with both pride and humility at the
support and love shown by the men and women who wear the badge in Metro
Nashville - and I know that spirit is present in officers everywhere in
these United States.
  That spirit
helped us deal with the grief that lasts much longer than many would imagine and
has to be overcome and worked through from many different angles.

Jonathan's birth, short life, and death were a blessing to me, in spite of the pain."

...And I would add that this description is
true of most Peace Keepers in the military and law enforcement... I
know that from much personal experience.  I will never forget the visit
of an officer who is a professed Agnostic... At the visitation for my
son when he was killed... This officer showed up and came to speak with
me personally.  His appearance was so clean, polished, pressed and
sharp that he glistened.  I was so surprised to see this man from
another city that I asked him why he had come... His response was, I
came because of you!"...

And the response of several Peace Keepers to
the ICU where my wife lay dying... a retired Navy Chief in the room
with us...  a command level officer in the room with us... and two
Chiefs of Police in the room with us for a moment and then awaiting my
emergence from the room after Sue had died.  The care and support of
these men and all of the local officers and Peace Keepers from all over
the United States and all around the world was astonishing... All of
that support buoyed me up and strengthened me emotionally as my
Commander-in-Chief took me into His arms and carried me through all of
the pain and emptiness that followed the deaths of my precious wife,
Sue, my precious son, Jamie, and the very best friend of my youth,
John,  just a year ago...

I have been the recipient several times... I
have been an observer sometimes... I have participated far too many
times... It is these events that show the deepest, true nature of Peace
Keepers... nowhere in this world is there greater love on deposit than
there is among those whom I proudly call Peace Keepers... and my
Compadres... NOWHERE!
====================================================================
This week I have been thinking on several events from Biblical
accounts... These accounts involved Centurions... (a person somewhat
akin to a Master Gunnery Sergeant... an in the field, hands on, among
the troops, experienced and scarred supervisor of troops that is
charged with the safety of the personnel and getting the mission
accomplished.  In Biblical times of 1900 to 2000 years ago these were
Roman Army Centurions... the get it done supervisors of the occupation
forces... the mission accomplishing field supervisors who had been
through it all as they came up through the ranks... They had been
successful... They had survived much... Now they were entrusted with
the care of their personnel and the accomplishment of all assigned
missions... the main one the keeping of the peace in the occupied
country around Jerusalem which was populated with people who wanted
them gone.)

These Centurions have made me think on and
about all of the Sergeants that I have known from my first tough, old,
grizzled veteran in the Virginia State Police through all of them that
I have known right down to the one that I have worked with here that
overshadows all the ones that I have known before and since.  Working
with this man has been one of my most enjoyable seasons of duty in all
of my service.

As I thought on all
of this I came to the conclusion that I have been most, greatly blessed to have
worked with this group of field supervisors... and I have either taken something
from them and carried it with me... or I have brought all that I gathered in my
Journey and shared it with the ones with whom I have shared the field and the
missions...  I have known a few Centurions... I have known them as Gunnery
Sergeants... State Police Sergeants in both the field and in headquarters... and
the street Sergeants in VBPD.  In the summertime I am the Chaplain Supervisor
on the walking beats and I work with the Sergeants assigned to the beats to facilitate
the keeping and restoring of the peace.

I find it a joyable experience to review my
Biblical History and recall all that my Commander-in-Chief has done
with and for members of the Peace Keepers of their day over several
thousands of years... He has given to them blessings... guidance...
healings... strength... support.... and whatever messages that they
needed to hear... as well as answers to their prayers... but He never
told even one of them to stop being Peace Keepers... Some were
Generals... Some were Kings as well as Generals... Some were line
officers needing help... Some were the assigned leaders over many, many
people... some were youths just beginning their service... and several
were Centurions.  I have not found a place where He told any one of
them to stop being Peace Keepers...!

The Peace Keeper has a special place and
purpose in the heart  and plans of my Commander-in-Chief.  He and I are
most thankful, ETERNALLY, for your service to all the rest of the
people.

I send my sympathy and my condolences to the
families of the Blackwater personnel who were killed in Iraq this past
week.  I send the same sympathies to the families of all of the other
Peace Keepers who gave their lives for our good as they kept their
commitments on foreign fields and in the homeland.

"BE CAREFUL OUT THERE!"  I know from much
experience that there are people out the who will try to take your life
simply because of who you are and because of what you do.  We need you
all.  There would be no peace and safety in this world... and no life
as we know it if it were not for you.  Take the very best of care of
and for you as you care for others.  Be especially careful to pay the
highest of attention to your spiritual welfare... Your spirit must be
healthy and strong for you to be successful.

Call of write if I may be of any assistance.

As it has always been... So it still is...

"VICTORIOUS WARRIORS WIN FIRST...
AND THEN GO TO WAR,
WHILE DEFEATED WARRIORS GO TO WAR FIRST...
AND THEN SEEK TO WIN."

ONLY LIVE PEACE KEEPERS SEE THE VICTORY!!!
THEY SEE IT ONLY BECAUSE OTHERS HAVE MADE THEIR ETERNAL
PAYMENTS OF SWEAT, BLOOD, TEARS AND LIFE FOR THAT VICTORY!

WITH THE DEEPEST OF APPRECIATION AND RESPECT...
BE BLESSED (A CONDITION TO BE ENVIED)...
BE SUCCESSFUL... BE SAFE...
[My injunction to be safe means doing all you know to do as you do your job... it means
doing the best you can with what you have where you are using all your faculties to get
the job done well and with good results conquering evil and keeping or restoring peace...
it does not mean to avoid duty and honor... it does not mean to cower or allow anything
to hinder you in the process of duty according to rules, law and ethics...  it means that if
the demand takes your earthly life you destroy as much evil as possible in the process.
That is my definition of being safe... doing the best you can and leaving the rest to God
or whomever else is responsible... being best employed for the sake and protection of all
the things and people that we hold dear.]

I represent, write for... and give the credit to:
God the Father (my Commander-in-Chief),
Jesus Christ the Son (the Eternal Captain of my life) and
the Holy Spirit of God (my Eternal Teacher, Keeper and Guide).
In Christ I live... with Him and for you I serve...
And I rejoice that you are there whether you are Christian or not...
