Russia To Show The Americans How It's Done in Iraq
"In Iraq, the Russians are about to show the Americans how
it's done. Or at least try to. After four Russian embassy personnel were
recently murdered by terrorists, many experienced counter-terrorism
professionals expected the Russians to act. Russia, over some two
centuries, has developed some very successful techniques for dealing
with terrorists. When confronted with terrorist attacks like this, the
Russians go in and play by terrorist rules. They terrorize the
terrorists. Back in the 1980s, for example, Islamic terrorists in
Lebanon kidnapped a Russian diplomat. The Russians (then the Soviets, a
distinction without much difference in these matters) quickly found out
which faction had their guy, kidnapped a relative of one of the
kidnappers, and had a body part delivered to the Islamic kidnappers. The
message was, release the Russian diplomat unharmed, or the KGB (Soviet
secret police) would keep sending body parts, and grabbing kinfolk of
the kidnappers. The Russian diplomat was released. Apparently that
lesson has been forgotten, at least in some parts of Iraq. This time
around, the Russians let the Americans and Iraqis deal with retrieving
their four diplomatic personnel. The Russians blame the Americans for
not getting their guys back alive, and now say that they will show the
Americans how to proceed in these matters. That may be a little more
complicated than the Lebanon operation. Back then, Lebanon was in chaos,
in the middle of a civil war. These days, there is a pretty strong
government in Iraq, with over 250,000 security personnel. And then there
are 150,000 coalition troops. All of these people may not have been able
to find the four Russian embassy staff, but they can get in the way of
Russian secret police searching for the kidnappers. Not that it's
impossible for the Russians to do what they want to do, but it will be
under more complicated conditions. Then again, the Iraqi government and
the Coalition may simply give the Russians a free hand, with the usual
admonition to avoid making too much of a mess. Moreover, Russia has
developed a lot of contacts in the Middle East over the years, and seems
prepared to call in some favors to get the job done. Whatever the case,
it's going to be an interesting example of Old School counter-terrorism."

Saudi Arabia Detains 43 Suspected Militants
The recent arrests and killings of more than 40 militants in Saudi Arabia is continuing testament of the capabilities of the
Saudi security forces, who have hunted, pursued, killed, and captured militants in the Kingdom with such a dogged persistence
that the once fearsome al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula has been unable to pull off a major attack in almost two years.
At the same time, the repetitive emergence of new militants in the country shows that Saudi Arabia still has much reform to do
of its educational, cultural, and religious environment.

The Jihadi Next Door?
Were the consequences of underestimating terrorists neither so grave nor so fresh, it would be tempting to look at the seven men indicted
on conspiracy charges for plotting to blow up the Sears Tower and laugh. Not so much at the suspects--five American citizens, a legal
immigrant from Haiti and an illegal Haitian national, all of whose hardscrabble bios make them seem more sad than sinister--but at those
who considered them a real threat to wage, as Attorney General Alberto Gonzales put it, "a full ground war against the United States." FBI
deputy director John Pistole conceded that the men, part of a Miami group called Seas of David, were "more aspirational than operational," and
its aspirations reeked of ineptitude. When alleged ringleader Narseal Batiste, 32, presented an FBI informant he thought was an al-Qaeda operative
with a list of materials necessary for jihad, it did not include explosives. Instead Batiste asked for $50,000, radios, uniforms and steel-toed boots.
Was the plan to blow the Sears Tower up or kick it down?

US, Canada Crack Brazen Drug-Smuggling Network
U.S. and Canadian authorities have cracked a smuggling network that used aircraft and delivery spots in remote western parks to ship tons of drugs
over the border, officials said on Thursday. Pilots taking advantage of the sparsely populated border between eastern Washington state and British Columbia
made brazen daylight deliveries in the wilderness, carrying potent "BC Bud" marijuana to the United States and cocaine into Canada, police said.

FBI strategy: Strike early
Terrorism charges against seven Florida men whose plans to blow up the Sears Tower and other targets barely extended beyond the talking stage represent a strategy of
fighting terror by pre-empting possible attacks rather than allowing them to incubate into more concrete plots, federal authorities said Friday. The turn to early intervention comes
as law-enforcement officials increasingly worry about the involvement of "homegrown terrorists," suspects who are not members of Al Qaeda but are inspired by its violent message and
may be exceedingly difficult to detect because they do not stand out the way foreigners might.

Iraqi Leader: Losing War Isn't An Option
Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki said in remarks published Sunday that losing the fight against terrorism would mean the end of
Iraq as a country. Al-Maliki also told the independent Kuwaiti daily, Al-Qabas, that his government knows "terrorists are infiltrating from
Afghanistan to Iraq through Iran." He said that although he was not "blaming the Iranian government for that, we call on it to control its borders."

Iraqis Say US Exit Plan Should Await Security
News of a possible US military reduction in Iraq, beginning as early as this fall, is being met in Baghdad with the deep skepticism of a war-weary people who have witnessed many other American
exit plans go unfulfilled. Most Iraqis want an end to the 127,000-strong US presence, which they consider an occupation. But they are concerned, too,
that Iraqi forces, while growing in size and capability, still can't cope with the insurgency and sectarian killings that have killed tens of thousands of Iraqis.

Mirror Image Training: Training to Combat Terrorism
Mirror Image is a tactical and strategic training course developed and owned by the Terrorism Research Center.
TRC instructors have trained hundreds of military personnel that are subsequently deployed to active combat operations, as well as large numbers of
first responders, law enforcement, and security professionals. Mirror Image is an intensive one-week classroom and field-training program, designed
to realistically simulate terrorist recruiting, training techniques, and operational tactics. During the course, participants will receive insight
into the mindset and rationale of the terrorist through hands-on experience with the methods and means terrorist employ, education about terrorist
ideologies and the cultural dimensions that influence their decision making process. Military, law enforcement, intelligence, and security
professionals will, in turn, be able to see themselves as the terrorists see them and understand the weaknesses in their own environment that the
terrorists will seek to exploit, and which all too often they miss. Armed with these insights participants will leave the course better able to
anticipate, prevent and respond to multiple terrorist threats.

Service Equipment Review
BlackHawk Law Enforcement Gear
A few years back BlackHawk Industries became BlackHawk Products Group. The change
was the result of company leadership that realized no one group of individuals could
do everything the right way - it would take a team of teams. The BlackHawk Products
Group (BPG) "family" is up to twelve teams now, and one of them is BlackHawk Law
Enforcement. Drawing on the experience of veteran law enforcement professionals, and
combining that with a state-of-the-art research & development group, BlackHawk Law
Enforcement has produced a new line of duty gear that integrates the best
characteristics of contemporary gear and improves upon some of the less desirable
traits. To the eye it looks just like other duty gear: black nylon. But you have to
look deeper than that (and I had to try it for myself to become a believer) to see
what it's really.

If you've never been to Crystal River, Florida - which is geographically right next
to Ocala, Florida, and spent some time in the water with the manatees, you really
should grab the chance. The first time I got to dive with these "gentle giants" was
in 1990 and my very first view of one was as it swam over me and it's shadow blocked
out the sun. With no clue (at that time) as to their actual size, I thought a whale
was swimming past and it scared the you know what out of me. Since then - becoming a
little more educated and experienced - I've enjoyed diving in the Ocala area a
couple more times. To enjoy the hot spots of diving you need to use a dive shop /
operation that knows where is good and where isn't at the various times of year.

THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA ...
exists because of you and your predecessors. If it were not for the
soldier, sailor
and law enforcement this nation would still be a colony of another
nation... or maybe
the indians would have won and we would not even be here.
In 1492 Columbus sailed West to find a shorter way to the East Indies.
Instead he
discovered a group of islands that came to be called the West Indies.
In 1607
English settlers and explorers landed on the shores of this city that
came to be
called Virginia Beach... then they sailed inland and established
Jamestown. The
Plymouth colony and the Mayflower Compact followed soon after and we
took root
as a New World. Colonies spread inland from many spots on the East
coast of this
New World and the settlers came to exhibit a new attitude of desiring
freedom from
the taxes and troops of an absentee king and the idea of a new nation was
germinated.
The colonists fought many times in many places to bring us into being as
a nation
within itself independent from the government of a far away nation... or
any other
nation that had thoughts of taking over and subjugating these fiercely
independent
people. These settlers wanted to determine their own destiny as a
people and as
a nation... a war of revolution was fought... fought through much
hardship and
privation... and won, defeating the greatest army in the world with aide
from the
French who were no longer our enemies but our allies.
