In Afghan Poppy Heartland, New Crops, Growing Danger

Mahmad Naim's cucumber patch is a speck of defiance in a vast landscape of opium poppy fields whose bright green bulbs, bursting with toxic sap, will bring nearly $1 billion into Helmand province this year. Naim is one of a few thousand farmers in Helmand, the country's major opium-producing region, who have signed on to a U.S.-sponsored program aimed at proving that legal crops, such as eggplants and tomatoes, can bring a healthy income for those who switch from poppy.

Iraq`s nightmare reality

By Sana Abdallah
If the old saying that things need to get worse before they get better applies to Iraq, it`s hard to imagine how much worse it can possibly get before that country returns to minimum normality.
As leaders bicker and bargain over who should assume what ministry in the government that Prime Minister-designate Nouri Maliki is trying to form, the streets of Baghdad and other cities across Iraq are being littered with dead bodies.
A suicide bombing here leaves dozens dead and maimed. Trigger-happy assassins there riddle holes in people for reasons only the shooters and their employers know. Dozens of corpses turn up daily in alleys, handcuffed and shot execution style, with signs of torture on their bodies.

Law Enforcement Response at a Crisis Scene

By LUCY ANN HOOVER, J.D., LL.M.
In today’s world and the war on terrorism, law enforcement officers must be ever mindful of the fact that, as some predict, a suicide bombing on American soil may be simply a matter of time. Imagine a familiar scene, a young college student carrying a backpack while walking on campus and stopping to sit on a bench within 500 feet of a football stadium packed with over 84,000 people. What happens next transforms this common occurrence on any campus in the nation into a terrible nightmare. Moments before halftime, the chemicals being carried by this young man detonate, causing an explosion heard almost 5 miles away. The detonation instantly kills the young student. Law enforcement officers sworn to protect the public will rush to the scene, ever ready to render aid and protect the innocent. Then, they will direct attention to determining the identity of the bomber, the type of device used, where it was assembled, and whether the bomber received assistance in its assembly. In the aftermath of such an incident, officers cannot allow their emotions and good intentions to overshadow the restraints placed upon them by the Fourth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.

Chavez offers oil to Europe's poor

Venezuelan President promises fuel to the needy and proclaims 'final days of the North American empire' before visit to Britain today
Venezuela's president Hugo Chavez arrives in London today with an extraordinary promise to offer cut-rate heating oil for needy families in Europe, modelled on a similar campaign in the US which has been seen partly as a bid to embarrass President George Bush. Last night Chavez also issued a taunting obituary for the 'American empire' on the eve of a visit where he will be shunned by Downing Street but welcomed by London Mayor Ken Livingststone.

Bush May Widen National Guard Patrols at Border

President Bush will push next week for a broad overhaul of the nation's immigration laws and plans to tighten security on the borders, possibly with a wider deployment of the National Guard, White House officials said yesterday.
The officials said Bush will use a prime-time television address Monday to outline his plans and then visit the U.S.-Mexico border on Thursday to highlight the problem of illegal immigration.

Military Plans Tests in Search for an Alternative to Oil-Based Fuel

When an F-16 lights up its afterburners, it consumes nearly 28 gallons of fuel per minute. No wonder, then, that of all the fuel the United States government uses each year, the Air Force accounts for more than half. The Air Force may not be in any danger of suffering inconveniences from scarce or expensive fuel, but it has begun looking for a way to power its jets on something besides conventional fuel.
In a series of tests — first on engines mounted on blocks and then with B-52's in flight — the Air Force will try to prove that the American military can fly its aircraft by blending traditional crude-oil-based jet fuel with a synthetic liquid made first from natural gas and, eventually, from coal, which is plentiful and cheaper.

Saddam the poet ready for hangman

THE former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein has resigned himself to being sent to the gallows. “I am ready to die,” he told his lawyer and confidante in an interview in his Baghdad prison. “I am not scared of execution.” Saddam is expected to return to court tomorrow for the resumption of a chaotic trial on charges of genocide and crimes against humanity that has lasted almost seven months.

Car Bombers Kill 14 Near Baghdad Airport

A pair of suicide car bombers killed 14 people Sunday in the biggest insurgent assault in months on the main road to Baghdad's airport, and other attacks killed a dozen more Iraqis and two American soldiers elsewhere in the capital.
A weekend of stepped-up violence across Iraq, which included six attacks on small Shiite Muslim shrines and the bombing deaths of two British soldiers near recently restive Basra late Saturday, came as politicians again failed to agree on a new Cabinet.

Ex-WMD Inspector: Politics Quashed Facts

A year after Bush administration claims about Iraqi "bioweapons trailers" were discredited by American experts, U.S. officials were still suppressing the findings, says a senior member of the CIA-led Iraq inspection team.
At one point, former U.N. arms inspector Rod Barton says, a CIA officer told him it was "politically not possible" to report that the White House claims were untrue. In the end, Barton says, he felt "complicit in deceit."

FRANKS REVIEW

Service Equipment Review:

EOTech Reflex Sights I can remember a few decades back when only "race guns" had any kind of reflex sight or “holoscope” on them: a holoscope being an electronic optical device that allowed the shooter to quickly POINT his gun at the target by providing an (sometimes) easily seen red dot, reticle, etc. Early models broke easily and were not ruggedized for the abuse cops and soldiers would expose them too. Further, on early models, if any part of the glass in the holoscope was smudged, cracked or simply broken out, the device was rendered useless. Welcome to the next generation. Over the course of the past couple years I've had the pleasure of testing (and thereafter using) several models of electronic optical aiming devices (holoscopes) manufactured by EOTech Inc.. Recently added to the L3 Communications family, EOTech offers a number of rugged easy-to-operate models of holoscope that are serving our soldiers (and cops) well.

Recreational Equipment Review:

Maxpedition Versipak

For the past couple of SHOT Shows, and other trade shows, I've visited the Maxpedition booth and spoken with representatives of the company. All of their products LOOKED interesting and well made, but we here at Borelli Consulting have this nasty habit: we won't write up something unless we can actually test it in the field. We use it the way it was designed to be used, and then the way all cops and soldiers are going to use it anyway. If it breaks, we send it back with a report on what we did to break it. If it's good to go, we give it a realistic write up. We finally got our hands on a Maxpedition Versipak and testing has proven it to be as capable as the propaganda and hype said it was. Maxpedition makes a full line of nylon products to include backpacks, pouches, "versipaks", briefcases, etc. What we tested was the Maxpedition Versipak in OD Green. Interesting piece of kit.

CHAPLAINS CORNER

SOME DAYS YOU BEAT THE ADVERSARY...

SOME DAYS THE ADVERSARY BEATS YOU...

SOME DAYS YOU BOTH WALK AWAY...

SOMETIMES YOU BOTH LIMP OR CRAWL AWAY...

SOMETIMES THE INCIDENT ENDS THE FUTURE HERE FOR SOME
    OR ALL PARTICIPANTS.

It's called life.  It happens to everyone... no one is immune to the daily events.
Some of it we bring on by what we do or do not do.
Some of it we create by our actions or our attitude or both.
Some of it happens because of the actions and attitudes of others...
and how we respond to it determines the outcome.
SOME OF IT IS HUMAN FAILURE...
WHAT THEY WERE TRYING TO ACHIEVE WAS NOT POSSIBLE FOR THEM
    AT THAT TIME...
SOME OF IT IS MECHANICAL FAILURE...
SOME MACHINE MADE BY MAN FAILED,  BROKE OR WORE OUT...
SOME OF IT IS ARBITRARY AND WE CANNOT AFFECT THE INCIDENT...
WE DID NOT CAUSE THE INCIDENT...
NO HUMAN BEING CAUSED THE INCIDENT...
BUT WE CAN AFFECT THE OUTCOME TO SOME GREATER OR LESSER
DEGREE  BY USE OF TALENT AND INTELLIGENCE.

Each of those in the following lists went out to do their job.  They
went with the attitude of coming back whole if they could... but they
went nonetheless not knowing what could befall them... and usually not
thinking about "what if?"  By faith in themselves, their training, their
equipment and their support systems they went to do a job that usually
falls somewhere in the unknown category until it is entered into...
These numbers are our Peace Keepers...
some gave some in the fight...
some gave all in the fight!
I thank my Commander-in-Chief for each of them and all of them:
