The Truth about John Walker Lindh
By Robert Young Pelton
John Walker Lindh aka John Walker aka Suleiman Ferris aka Abdul Hamid
aka The American Taliban is a person that I will mostly likely to be associated
for some time to come. I am sure on my obituary there will be a bombastic note
that I was “the journalist who “discovered” Lindh
after the battle at Qali Jangi”
(the afghans have that dubious honor) Many have told me that Lindh’s story was a big deal back in the States. I will
never know, I was in Afghanistan covering combat operations
with in the ongoing war against the Taliban for CNN so I will never have the
chance to the get the full impact of finding an American professing his love
for the Taliban.
To me Lindh
was just an unpleasant arrogant kid who preferred to stay with his murdering
friends. He was in the fact, the second Irish-American Jihadi
I have met and interviewed. The first one was a one-legged psychopath who had
been trained in the same camps and had fought in; Read the rest here: http://www.blackwaterusa.com/btw2006/articles/013006ryp.html

Clandestine Laboratory Operations: Training for Close Quarters Combat
Not only do clandestine laboratory operations present unique tactical challenges, they also
require a specific approach to hand-to-hand combat encounters. However, before we
address these specific elements let me share my perspective regarding tactics in general.
The American Heritage College Dictionary defines tactics in the following manner: A
procedure or set of maneuvers engaged in to achieve an end, an aim, or a goal.
When I teach tactics to law enforcement personnel or military special forces I begin with that
definition and supplement it with the following: Tactics, for our purposes, is the intelligent
application of speed, surprise, and violence of action to acquire a specific end. While I don’t
believe that there are any single rules or techniques that work in all tactical situations, I do
believe that there are certain concepts that occur so frequently that we can confidently apply
them as guiding themes. Speed, surprise, and violence of action fit that description. It is in
the intelligent application of each element from which its value is derived. Each of the three
elements can be applied, in varying degrees, to a myriad of situations. Violence of action,
for example, could be the display of superior firepower during a shoot out or it could be the
mere appearance of superior firepower. This is often the case when a team quickly
breaches an entry with multiple firearms in the “ready” position, thereby overwhelming the
unsuspecting occupants.

U.S. Embassy in Malaysia Reopens
The Genocide Trap
by Bertrand M. Patenaude
"The essence of who we are is at stake. Genocide is evil and must be stopped." So declared New Jersey senator Jon Corzine when he introduced the Darfur Accountability Act last March. The evil in question was the widespread atrocities that are still under way in western Sudan, including the deaths of hundreds of thousands of civilians, along with rape, torture, kidnapping, pillaging, and the forced displacement of millions.
Senator Corzine echoed Secretary of State Colin Powell and President George W. Bush, who six months earlier had used the word "genocide" to characterize the death and destruction in Darfur. That was a historic moment, as the U.S. government for the first time labeled an ongoing crisis "genocide." But the real surprise was that this genocide finding did not trigger an urgent rescue operation. It wasn't supposed to work this way.

The Viciousness of Assault and Resilience of Man
By Bob Kasper
According to most media reports violence is on a downward trend. What they fail
to report is that violent attacks are more violent than ever. For whatever
reason people who commit violent attacks today are more inclined to go
"all the way" rather than just beat their victim. This is especially
true in multiple attack situations that can turn into a vicious feeding frenzy
once the victim is down. Knowing how vicious an assault can be, we must be sure
that the tactics and techniques we employ are effective enough to stop this
type of mad aggression. We probably think they are effective because we're
hitting all the right spots with the right tools but what about the resilience
of man and your attacker's determination to survive?

BREAKING NEWS FOR THE PROFESSIONAL
2,400-foot tunnel 'beats them all'
In the corner of a cavernous Otay Mesa warehouse, a small room held a big secret: the door to a passageway from Mexico.
U.S. agents had been investigating the possibility of an elaborate drug-smuggling tunnel between Tijuana and San Diego for more than a year, but couldn't find it despite using military equipment so advanced it's classified.

Officer shoots off-duty cop
An off-duty city police officer who sources said was highly intoxicated and holding his gun on a young man outside a White Castle in the Bronx was shot and gravely wounded yesterday by another officer responding to a 911 call, authorities said.
Officer Eric Hernandez, 24, was in critical condition with "extremely, extremely grave injuries," said Dr. Stephen Dirusso, chief of surgery at St. Barnabas Hospital. He was shot three times - once in each leg and once in the abdomen - and two of the bullets struck major arteries, causing massive blood loss, Dirusso said.

Big Google is watching you
‘Don’t be evil.” That’s the motto of Google, which was founded in 1997 and is now worth $129 billion (£72 billion), making it the fastest growing company in the history of the world. The mixture of unprecedented financial growth and squeaky-clean ethics has made Google the only company in the world which is perceived as simultaneously cool, successful and on the side of the good guys.
Or at least that was the case until last week, when Google announced that it was switching its search facilities in China to servers based inside the country, and that as part of that process it would be co- operating with Chinese government censorship of the internet.

Army Tests Soldiers in Alaskan Extremes
The Humvee's headlights shone incredibly bright, casting daylight clarity on a line of spruce trees, every needle standing out in stark contrast to the dark night of Alaska's interior. Next to the vehicle, the incandescent lights on another Humvee glowed like mere candles. It was time to study an emerging technology in one of the harshest places on earth, the Army's sprawling Cold Regions Test Center near Fort Greely.
The center includes man-made ice fields, snow rinks and sharp slopes for rating equipment, weapons and clothing in temperatures that can pitch past 60 degrees below zero and winds so fierce they can whip snow into a blinding fog.

Hamas may fold militia into military
The leader of Hamas suggested Saturday that the Islamic group could create a Palestinian army that would include its militant wing — responsible for scores of deadly attacks on Israelis — in the aftermath of its crushing victory in parliamentary elections.
Israeli officials condemned the plan, demanding that Hamas renounce violence. Palestinian security officers, including loyalists from the defeated Fatah Party, said they would never submit to Hamas control.

Exclusive: Direct Talks—U.S. Officials and Iraqi Insurgents
American officials in Iraq are in face-to-face talks with high-level Iraqi Sunni insurgents, NEWSWEEK has learned. Americans are sitting down with "senior members of the leadership" of the Iraqi insurgency, according to Americans and Iraqis with knowledge of the talks (who did not want to be identified when discussing a sensitive and ongoing matter). The talks are taking place at U.S. military bases in Anbar province, as well as in Jordan and Syria. "Now we have won over the Sunni political leadership," says U.S. Ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad. "The next step is to win over the insurgents."

Guerrilla behind Munich attack has no regrets
A former Palestine Liberation Organization guerrilla who was one of the masterminds of the 1972 terrorist attack on the Munich Olympics in which 11 Israeli athletes were killed said he “regrets nothing” about the incident.
Speaking to Germany’s Spiegel TV in an interview released Saturday, Mohammed Oudeh, better known as Abu Daoud, said it was up to Palestinians to “fight as long as it takes Israel to recognize our rights.”

FRANKS REVIEW
Service Equipment Review:
New Products from UnderCoverComfort
Every time I talk to the President of UnderCoverComfort (that's not a typo; it's all one word) he's bouncing off the walls with excitement about a new product, new development, new partnership or something. Enthusiasm is necessary to positive business management and he has this in no short supply. As with every other product line, though, I don't share that enthusiasm until I've tested the products and enjoyed their performance. There have been times past where a business representative's enthusiasm about a product proved... well, let's just say unfounded. Those products, after testing, have been sent back with a letter about what I did to them and why they're in the condition they're in. That wasn't the case with the new products from UnderCoverComfort (UCC from here on).
A few weeks back I received six new products from UCC for testing and evaluation. Of the six, five specifically relate to officer or agent safety while the last one is practical and convenient. Let's take a look at them and see how UCC combines "under cover comfort" with safety, practicality and cost effectiveness.

Recreational Equipment Review
RedHead Bows from Bass Pro Shops
So nearly everyone who has ever enjoyed an outdoor sport or recreational activity has heard of Bass Pro Shops. What I didn't realize until the middle of last year (and maybe I'm just dense) is that the "Red Head" line of products that they sell are their own. The RedHead brand name is proprietary to Bass Pro Shops. In the past some retail brand names haven't enjoyed much of a following due to poor quality control or marketing plans. With RedHead it's completely opposite. I'm sure someone has had a bad experience with the RedHead brand name, but I haven't found anyone yet. For myself I've experienced RedHead shoes, boots, socks (I love their socks) and now... bows. Recently I had the opportunity to handle and try out several of the RedHead bows. It's been quite some time since I was active in archery, but the old habits (some of them bad) came back easily enough.

CHAPLAINS CORNER
SUCCESS...
is the result we seek when we apply ourselves to any endeavor... the
effort to achieve
a specific goal. Sometimes you plan something and it turns out just as
you planned it.
Other times the finish does not resemble the original intent. Some
things allow and
follow procedures. Other things must be adapted to as you progress
from the
beginning... not always knowing what nor where the end will be.
Sometimes it is
push, pull, click, click and it is accomplished. Other times every
step and turn
requires adjustment and adaptation.
Military campaigns are like that... Serving warrants can be like that
too. Sometimes
it is textbook... exactly according to plan... Sometimes it goes awry
from the
beginning and is never exactly back on the line we intended to follow.
The greatest
variable with which we have to work is people and people are not only
the raw
material with which we must work... they have a mind of their own and
can be very
unpredictable.
