US Planning Strike Against Iran

The United States government reportedly began coordinating with NATO its plans for a possible military attack against Iran. The German newspaper Der Tagesspiegel collected various reports from the German media indicating that the North Atlantic Treaty Organization are examining the prospects of such a strike.
According to the report, CIA Director Porter Goss, in his last visit to Turkey on December 12, requested Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan to provide military bases to the United States in 2006 from where they would be able to launch an assault.

Lasers for Dumbnutz

John Connor
It's a very rare, way cool thing when the first time you use a new weapon system operationally, it's fun and funny. Even better when none of your troops get hurt. That's the way it was for me and laser sights.
Lasers were spanky-new then, and I had just spun-up a metro SWAT unit on `em. That's when we got the call on a bungled-robbery hostage-taking incident, and we rolled with a bag-full of berry-blasters. On arrival, we learned this was a combination SWAT mission, training session and situation comedy.

Own Your Fear: Capitalizing on “Near-Life” Experiences

By: Jason Winkle
I believe in training. The better part of my professional career has focused on training people how to deal with stressful and dangerous situations. I have witnessed first hand the potential that humans have to successfully perform under such conditions. My years of experience have also illuminated the limitations of conventional training. If we are to continue to develop our training methodologies we must address areas of deficiency.
The tendency to accept the profession’s training inertia as law must be fought. I remember consulting with groups ten years ago who were shocked that I suggested using a training suit to allow contact-driven force-on-force scenarios. Today, thanks to many open-minded trainers and police departments, training suits are a staple in most tactics courses.

BREAKING NEWS FOR THE PROFESSIONAL

New Year Brings Array of New State Laws

The new year will dawn with an array of state laws taking effect across the country, offering a snapshot of issues that matter to Americans - from identity theft and sex offenders to dangers on the road.
Perennial challenges such as taxes and health care crop up among the new measures, as do steps to improve elections and enforce ethical behavior among politicians. Newer issues are being raised, too, including an Illinois law that targets human trafficking.

Bush Awards 9 Purple Hearts to U.S. Troops

President Bush began the new year on Sunday at the bedsides of wounded servicemen and women, and awarded nine Purple Hearts to U.S. troops who served in Iraq and Afghanistan.
The president boarded the Marine One presidential helicopter before dawn on his ranch in Crawford and flew more than an hour to Randolph Air Force Base. His motorcade drove to Brooke Army Medical Center, a 224-bed hospital at nearby Fort Sam Houston, to meet with about 50 injured members of various branches of the armed forces and their families.

Bush Contends Domestic Spying Vital, Legal

President Bush strongly defended his domestic spying program on Sunday, calling it legal as well as vital to thwarting terrorist attacks, and contended the leak making it public had caused "great harm to the nation."
"This is a limited program designed to prevent attacks on the United States of America and, I repeat, limited," Bush told reporters after visiting wounded troops at Brooke Army Medical Center. "I think most Americans understand the need to find out what the enemy's thinking."

Tennessee Enlists Shame to Fight Drunken Driving

A new Tennessee law is enlisting the power of shame to discourage drunken driving _ even though law enforcement, the governor and various experts are calling it an expensive and bad idea.
Starting Jan. 1, convicted drunken drivers are required to do 24 hours of roadside cleanup while wearing orange vests emblazoned with the phrase "I am a Drunk Driver."

Police Nationwide Face Tough Hunt for Recruits

Police forces around the United States are borrowing tactics from sports recruiters and the corporate world to fill their thinning ranks, a report said.

    Two Held Over Sulawesi Bombing

INDONESIAN police have detained two men in connection with the deadly bombing of a market kiosk selling pork in the Central Sulawesi city of Palu on the weekend - an attack that experts fear signals a spread of the sectarian violence that has racked the province.
The blast, which killed seven people and wounded 53, is the latest in a series of attacks on Central Sulawesi's Christian community. The violence has largely gone unpunished, despite the deployment of 3000 extra police in the province.

North Korea Gathers Kit for Nuclear Bombs

NORTH KOREA is working to restart a reactor that would produce enough plutonium to make 10 atomic bombs a year, a leading American nuclear scientist has revealed.
Siegfried Hecker, former director of the US government's top secret Los Alamos laboratory, also said the North Koreans reprocessed 8,000 fuel rods to make up to 14kg (30lb) of plutonium last summer, despite taking part in six-party talks hosted by China to end their weapons programme.

    Palestinian Security Forces Free Hostage

Palestinian security officers stormed a building where an Italian hostage was being held Sunday, freeing the man in a shootout with his kidnappers.
It was a rare show of force in a wave of kidnappings, shootouts and other mayhem in the Gaza Strip that has embarrassed Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas, threatening to undermine his Fatah Party in Jan. 25 legislative elections and boost the Islamic militant group Hamas.

    Car Bombs Explode Around Iraq

Insurgents exploded 13 car bombs across Iraq on Sunday, including eight in Baghdad within a three-hour span, but the New Year's Day onslaught killed no one and injured only 20 people, police said.
A Sudanese official, meanwhile, announced that six kidnapped employees were freed after Sudan announced it would close its Baghdad embassy as demanded by the kidnappers. A Cypriot man kidnapped four months ago also was freed after his family paid a ransom, a relative said.

    FRANKS REVIEW

    Service Equipment Review:

    Improvised Weapons in Controlled Environments

Not that long ago I saw a humorous story about a military unit that was loading onto a commercial aircraft for transportation to Iraq. The Colonel in command had the (embarassing) job of telling the soldiers that they had to turn over all fingernail clippers, lighters, matches, and other small, but potentially damaging, objects. Of course, they were allowed to keep their body armor, helmets, M16s, bayonets, etc. I haven't verified the veracity of that story, but I recently found myself in circumstances where I didn't think a weapon would be allowed and I therefore found myself inventorying my improvised weapons list. Several of the improvised weapons I used performed amazingly well, and several were carefully scrutinized by security personnel without any negative words being said. Here's what I did...

    Recreational Equipment Review:

    CamelBak Pakteen

CamelBak is well known for their military and law enforcement hydration systems. Further, while there are more than a few runners, roller-skaters, hikers and backpackers familiar with the CamelBak products, there might not be so many who are familiar with those products specifically designed to support those activities. One of the best hydration systems we're familiar with is the compact Pakteen - perfect for walking, hiking, backpacking, running and other activities where you may not need three liters of water, but you definitely need to take some hydration along. In fact, we even figured out how to use it scuba diving...

    HAPPY NEW YEAR...
This time of year that wishful greeting is often heard.  I have heard it all my life since
childhood.  As I think on it now I realize that most people were following tradition and
repeating the greetings that had been passed along to them during their life time or
in the most recent past.  The greeting is filled with good wishes and good desires for
the recipient.  Would it not be wonderful if we could all fulfill those good wishes for one
another... for ourselves to be able to bestow good things upon another by wishing and
greeting... but, alas, we do not have enough of that power individually to cover
everyone that we would bestow them upon.  Ah, but it does the hearts good, both ours
and others, to hear the desires expressed.

There is a mighty and marvelous thing happening every moment of every day.  It's
called life.  We may choose to be fully involved... or we may choose to drop out...
we may choose any level between those two extremes.  All of life involves choices.
Choices can have benefits and blessings... Choices can have deprivation and
difficult consequences...  If we are alert and watchful in the personal choices that
we make we create a better life for ourselves and for those who care for and about
us... and sometimes we create a better life for those in close proximity to us
physically or in close proximity to us emotionally.
