THERE IS A TIME...

"In the language of the Holy Writ, there is a time for all things. There is a time to

preach and a time to fight." Thus ended the sermon of Lutheran pastor John Peter
Muhlenburg, as he removed his clerical robes to reveal the uniform in the Continental
Army.

After church service, 300 men of his congregation rode off with him to join General
Washington's troops.

In the sinking of the Dorchester, it was a time of sacrifice as the four chaplains gave
up their right to life and went down with the ship after giving their life jackets to
Peace Keepers so that four Peace Keepers might survive.

I had just typed a whole message and was just inserting my weekly statistics when
the power went out, the back-up battery pack failed and the whole message was lost.

Now two of my stats pages just walked away.

I do not have time to start over... Some days you eat the bear... some days the bear
gets you... today the bear got to my machine and my message so I will resume the
statistics.  They follow;

by P1 Columnist Richard B. Weinblatt Many of us in law enforcement remember to
maintain our firearms. As a firearms instructor, I'm part of that group of trainers
that has hammered the message home. Unfortunately, few remember to check

I received the following from one of my readers... David's father... who is a retired
Lt. Col. from the U.S.Army.

Former
Olympia, WA, resident David Robert Shephard, 41, was killed Monday,
September 19, 2005
, by a suicide bomber in Mosul, Iraq, while working as a
contract security agent.  He died as he lived, following the family motto Non Noblis
Solum,  Not for Ourselves Alone.

Shephard served in the US Army, the Army Reserve, and the Washington State
National Guard.  He gained a Warrant Officer rank and when his Special Forces
National Guard unit was federalized, served in both
Iraq and Afghanistan.
He returned to
Iraq to work for Blackwater PSD as a contract security agent, stating
that he believed in the importance of the American mission there.

Chief Warrant Officer Shephard has several military decorations.  He most
treasured his Parachutist Badge and the Combat Infantryman’s Badge the latter
awarded for action in the vicinity of
Baghdad, Iraq.

He is survived by his parents, David and Karen Shephard, of
Shelton, WA; his wife,
Cindy, of Seattle; and siblings, Deane, Daniel, Michelle and Gabrielle.
On
Saturday, October 1, 2005, there will be a memorial/celebration of life at the
Acacia Funeral Home 14951 Bothell Way NE,
Seattle at 11:30am.  There will be
a Catholic Mass on
Sunday, October 2, 2005, at the Seattle University Chapel at
1:30 pm. Burial will be with full military honors at the National Cemetery of Tahoma
on Monday, October 3 at
1:30 pm.  In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be
made to the Seattle Habitat for Humanity project [Habitat for Humanity of
Seattle/So King County, 13925 Interurban Ave S, Suite 200 Tukwila, WA  98168],
one to which both Dave and Cindy provided many volunteer hours.

If you are a praying person please be sure and pray for the families of all of these
about whose lives and catastrophes I have reported in the stats.  We are a family,
we Peace Keepers, and we must do what we can to see to the watch care of and
for one another when possible... Thank you for doing this.  Thank you for who you
are and for what you do.  My Commander-in-Chief and I do so deeply appreciate
your service.

I was privileged today to do the invocation at the 25th Annual Equestrian
Competition being held here in our city this year.  I saw some fabulous uniforms and
horses and met some marvelous people.  I hope to get back tomorrow for the awards
ceremonies at the end of the two day event.  Then on from there to a retirement party
for one of my best officer friends... and a memorial service on Monday for the
mother of one of our deceased Police Supervisors.

Life goes on in spite of us and the many occurring events... people come and people
leave.  While we are busy living we must not forget to be aware that life is arbitrary
and leaving this life can happen just as quickly as many other things can happen...
and we should make prior preparations for that event as well.

As I attend and attend to these many functions and am privileged to invoke the
blessings of my God upon the Peace Keepers and those present I find an ever
increasing longing in the depths of my soul.  I find that I am wishing that this duty
might never end... and all the time I know that one day it will end for me.  No person
lives here forever... and no person is indispensable in any position of endeavor.
Mortality is ever present, but most especially as we age and others make decisions
for us.

You are all ever present in my prayers and my care and concern.  I close today as
always...

"BE CAREFUL OUT THERE!!!"  Take the very best of care of all the facets of your
being.  Keep it balanced... for if you do not take the best of care of you... you will not
long be able to take care of others.  Do not avoid the care of your spiritual being.  It,
too, must be strong when the great tests come... and you can be sure they will come.

As it has always been... So it still is...

"VICTORIOUS WARRIORS WIN FIRST...
AND THEN GO TO WAR,
WHILE DEFEATED WARRIORS GO TO WAR FIRST...
AND THEN SEEK TO WIN."
Sun tzu

ONLY LIVE PEACE KEEPERS SEE THE VICTORY!!!

WITH THE DEEPEST OF APPRECIATION AND RESPECT...
BE BLESSED (A CONDITION TO BE ENVIED)...
BE SUCCESSFUL... BE SAFE...
