<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<+>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
ALWAYS IN MY THOUGHTS...

I have no spouse to care for nor about.  She died over three years ago.
I have three surviving grown children... One son was killed last summer in a  motor
       vehicle crash.
One is a recovering addict, currently doing well...
One is a very successful professional...
One is living with me and has been determined by physicians to have an
untreatable, inoperable tumor and until just a few days ago she had given
up and was ready to die and depart this world.

Several days ago one of my closest friends in ministry came to see the daughter
who is living with me.  He had been contemplating and praying about her
situation.  He had received a message he needed to convey to her.  He brought
that message to her... shared it with her... and she received it and acted upon it.
Since then she has been a very different person.  Her sister asked her, "What did
you do with my sister?"  Now this daughter is looking forward to living and not to
dying.  Now she is making plans to further her life in spite of the infirmity in her body.
Now she is excited about the new things she is learning and experiencing... and like
a little child with a new toy... excitedly running to me often with questions and sharing
new discoveries.  At no time in her 43 years has she ever been like this.  I have
read of this type of response and seen  it a few times in my career... but as often as
I tried to give her the same information she would not hear it from me.  The good
news is that she has chosen to hear it from him.

He did not tell her anything that she has never heard before... this time she was
ready to listen.
She began immediately to read and to learn.

I have absorbed much news this week.  I have had all of you always in my thoughts
as I absorbed the news.  During the course of my week I have watched much
information presented by the media... and I have seen Peace Keepers presented
in a most unflattering manner.  Some of what I saw was sickening and if a real
Peace Keeper on any field of endeavor were to conduct themselves in the manner
displayed they assuredly would not last very long.  Every time I see one of these
portrayals I cringe.  I cringe because the images presented cause those who see
them to think that Peace Keepers really act that way and causes people to form
attitudes that you and I will have to deal with some time some where.

I know the reality of the profession from much experience but few outside the
profession have studied history to learn from it... nor do they want to know the
reality of the present world outside their own little circle of life.  Education, the
gaining of information, is touted as a means to a better life.  If it is going to be a
means to a better life each person is going to have to oversee their own
education rather than just following some one else' recommended course of
study.  The true history of the nation's beginning and progression is imperative.
True history of the great nations of the world is imperative.  Learning from the
mistakes of the past is necessary.  If we do not learn from the past we are most
sure to repeat the same mistakes that destroyed the nations that have risen to
greatness and disappeared..

Why are we required to receive so much training?  Why do zealous Peace Keepers
voluntarily commit themselves to so much training beyond the required minimum?
Training is necessary in order to be successful.  Basic instinct is marvelous but if
it is not guided, directed, honed and practiced it can betray you rather than
guarantee success.  Even after all of this effort sometimes we still get caught in
situations where the odds are severely stacked against us and we do not survive.

Following are some of those facts telling us of just this past week where
circumstances caught up with Peace Keepers;

On the Lighter Side... from the net

Subject: Sport Car or Missing in Action?

<>Dawson and his wife, Jennifer, had been debating buying a vehicle for weeks.
He wanted a truck. She wanted a fast little sports-like car so she could zip through
traffic around town. He would probably have settled on any beat up old truck, but
everything she seemed to like was way out of their price range.

"Look!" she said. "I want something that goes from 0 to 200 in just a few seconds.
Nothing else will do. My birthday is coming up so surprise me!"

Dawson did just that. For her birthday, he bought her a brand new bathroom scale.

Nobody has seen or heard from him since.

I have received a particular message several times and I wonder if someone in a
position to know will verify it or advise if it is a hoax...  I am told that soldiers on the
battlefield in Iraq
have used feminine tampons to stop bleeding in bullet wounds.
One e-mail article says the life of a Marine was saved by this application.  Can it be
verified?
===============================================================
As I have lived through this week, watched and participated in my daughter's
progress, answered mail from inquiries and handled daily business I considered it
a priceless priviledge to be involved in life with you and in life as a Peace Keeper
even though I have been forced to take retirement from active duty as a police
officer.  I continue as a civilian volunteer chaplain to absorb any and all information
that comes to my attention that I might learn from and convey to you.  Life for me is
still an adventure even though I have had to make a great course adjustment.  If I
cannot be in the action then I want to be a resource to those who are in the action.

This week I read an advertisement seeking law enforcement officers to take jobs in
Iraq training police recruits.  The money was so very attractive.  They were even
taking retired officers who were within eight years of retirement who could qualify...
but I prayed... and the guidance said the same that I already knew... I am currently,
exactly where I am supposed to be because of the needs here.  I know directions
for me will change as soon as the needs I must deal with here are met.  This is
knowledge I have had for some time now... and again it has been confirmed... Do
what you know to do until you receive orders to do something else .

My life has been long and adventurous.  I have learned much by experience,
self gained education and application of that education.  As a very young man I
decided to set out to make some kind of good difference in the life of this world.
Many places along the journey I received inspiration plus I experienced the
excitement of the discovery of things that worked for me that others around me
did not understand.  I explored the things that fascinated me and intrigued me.  I
loved ancient history and read and learned from it.  I loved the history of our nation
and read and learned from it.  I was fascinated with engineering principles and
learned and applied them.  I have always been inspired by Peace Keepers.  I read
and learned about them and learned from them.

I always, from early childhood, admired and respected the "State Men", the
Virginia Troopers whom we seldom saw but the warning spread quickly whenever
one of them was coming up the country road... or if they were running a checking
detail at the cross roads store.  One of them worked an accident that happened in
my front yard on a rainy day and he sat on my front porch to do his paperwork.
</>
I was close enough to him to touch him but too afraid to even speak to him.  He was
awesome.  His uniform was so sharp.  His leather was so black and shiny.  He was
awesome.  That admiration took root and eventually led me to be one of them at the
age of 22.

Those years were crammed with work and experience... plus receiving the
awareness that some important facet was missing.  My first duty station was so
busy that I received ten years of experience the first two years covering everything
from highway patrol, motor vehicle crash investigation, truck weight and equipment
enforcement to much criminal investigation.  I loved it dearly... but something was
missing.  I had a hunger that I came to recognize as a spiritual hunger.  No one I
could find could tell me how to meet that hunger.  Subsequently it was met and I was
brought here in answer to prayer... ultimately called to ministry, trained and then
placed with VBPD as Relief Police Chaplain and an Auxiliary Police Officer.  I
attended two police academies simultaneously and embarked upon the most
adventurous portion of my life.

Twenty nine years of life, ministry and experience I have experienced here.  The
most powerful aspect of it all has been the people whom I have met.  Some helped
me.  Some I helped.  Some became life long friends.  Some I saw a few times.
Some I saw only once.  The experiences led me from being the new guy to being
supervisor.  Eventually after many hours of answering calls and working patrol we
had a cataclysmic event in our city on Labor Day weekend of 1989.  That event
guided the city government and the police department to find they needed
something they did not have and found the inspiration for the answer in another
beach resort city.  As a result I was put in charge of daily administration of the
newly expanded chaplain program.  We have been through much.  We are still
going through much including reorganization... but today I am still doing the same
job assigned to me in 1990.  I was on duty on the ocean front in 1989 and now
am serving my 16th summer season on the ocean front as Chaplain Supervisor.

In the process of these twenty nine years I have known thousands of Peace
Keepers in both law enforcement and the military who have come and gone in
both my life and the police department.  No man has ever been privileged to live
any greater adventure than I have experienced... fully practical and including the
spiritual facet.  It can only be described by me as a WOW!

PLEASE REMEMBER THAT THERE ARE THREE THINGS THAT BRING
INJURY AND DEATH TO PEACE KEEPERS...
POOR PERSONAL ATTITUDE...
STRESS... OR BETTER DESCRIBED AS DISTRESS...
PEOPLE...

You must learn all you can about each item...
You must learn how to recognize and make adjustment for each item...
If you do not learn to handle them... they will most certainly handle you.

Attitude covers everything from dealing with people in crisis situations to driving.
Stress is anything which upsets the equilibrium of the human organism.
People are the raw material of most of your job.

Years of education, training and practice are involved in becoming successful
with all three categories.

Hear, see, learn and apply.  Gain wisdom.  Wisdom is the ability to rightly apply
the information that you learn.  You do not know a thing until you can retain it,
repeat it and apply it.  That is why so much training and practice is necessary.
The process must  basically be continuous, or at least periodic on short cycles
of time, in order to be effective... and most of it must be at your own volition.

Be careful out there.  Be alert, watchful, suspicious and wary.  Take great care of
all facets of your being.  Please do not leave out care and provision for your
spiritual welfare.  That is a whole system of education that most people, even
Peace Keepers, neglect.  Some day in a crisis you will need it.  I encourage you
to prepare for spiritual well being just as judiciously as you provide for any other
part of you.

As it has always been... So it still is...

"VICTORIOUS WARRIORS WIN FIRST...
AND THEN GO TO WAR,
WHILE DEFEATED WARRIORS GO TO WAR FIRST...
AND THEN SEEK TO WIN."

ONLY LIVE PEACE KEEPERS SEE THE VICTORY!!!
