Incident Details
Cause of Death: Gunfire, Friday, July 15, 2005
Suspect Info: Shot and killed
Sergeant Gonzales was shot and killed when he and three other deputies investigated reports of a
man shooting at an airplane. The pilot of the crop-duster had reported the incident to the sheriff's
department and identified the home where the shots were fired from.
When the deputies arrived at the scene they encountered the homeowner, who was armed with
several firearms. When the deputies ordered the man to drop his weapons he opened fire, killing
Sergeant Gonzales and slightly wounding one of the other deputies. The deputies returned fire,
killing the suspect.
One of the deputies involved in the shooting was the son of Assistant Chief Bill Linder of the
Wisner, Louisiana, Police Department, who was shot and killed in the line of duty 10 months
earlier.
Sergeant Gonzales is survived by his wife and son.

STREET SURVIVAL NEWSLINE NO. 758
Off-duty encounter with on-duty officers is often the most dangerous
During the first six months of this year, four of the 28 officers killed by gunfire were off duty at the
time of the shootings, a statistic that underscores the need for vigilance when working extra jobs
or traveling this summer.
Calibre Press Street Survival Seminar instructors say officers should remember that if they find
themselves in situations where they have to take action off duty, they must follow the directives
of uniformed personnel as they arrive on the scene being careful to clearly identify themselves
as police officers.
This week, Newsline joins the Houston area law enforcement community in mourning the loss
of a reserve deputy constable who was killed on his extra-duty job July 6th by a Harris County
deputy sheriff who mistook him for an escaping felon.
