Boston police are investigating whether a patrolman hit by a stolen car while working a paid traffic detail almost two weeks ago was intentionally struck by the driver, who, one witness told police, appeared to target the officer.
Police Officer Brian Smigielski was struck by a Toyota sedan shortly before 2 a.m. at the intersection of Elm Hill Avenue and Howland Street in Roxbury while working at a KeySpan Energy work site on April 17.

LETTER FROM A READER..
Last Wednesday I arrived at Blackwater for another course. It was a somber day
as news had just arrived about the loss of six of their private contractors in Iraq
which, at least for me, somewhat set the mood for the next couple of days. I was
originally scheduled for Col. Chandler’s Precision Rifle II. There were only two of
us civilians enrolled but, rather than canceling our course, we were allowed to
participate in a course for eighteen Marines in the use of their SAMR rifles; a
curriculum somewhat similar to that which we would have had in PR II.
So here I am, a fifty-eight year old civilian with young Marines, some of who are
young enough to be my grandchildren, and many of who had combat experience.
Initially they eyed me curiously, gave me wide berth, and called me “sir.” As the
weekend progressed and they saw that this old man could, for the most part, hang
with the kids, they assimilated me into their group. After conclusion of our exercises
on Sunday morning, one of the sergeants came up to the instructor and said “Sir,
we want a group picture with Don.” Then, as we gathered, they in full gear and me in
civvies; they said “No, put your gear on.” Finally, as we grouped for the picture, I
stood to the side. They then pulled me to the center for the picture.
Words cannot describe how this sequence of events impacted me. In fact, as we
met to close the class, I tried to express my feelings to these young men, but I only
got as far as “You guys are great.” Then the only thing that came out was the tears.
I just couldn’t get the words out.
So, if any of you Marines happen to read this, I’ll try again. Never in my life have I
been more proud to be associated with a group of men. Never doubt how much we
appreciate what you are doing for us. For those few who don’t, f---‘em. May God

Instructor, seminar attendees inspired by officer's personal courage
Officer Bryan Laurie, who has been on the job only two months, is accustomed to being "picked
on" by veteran officers and considers the puns and practical jokes part of the process of becoming
acclimated to a new job.
So, the 23-year-old police officer from Haltom City, Texas, wasn't surprised when a Calibre Press
instructor picked him out of a crowd of about 300 officers attending a Street Survival Seminar in
Fort Worth last week and used him as a teaching tool to drive home important safety lessons.
Laurie was the youngest officer in attendance and had the least experience.
Learning from the Fallen
Perhaps the most difficult part of a Street Survival Seminar is listening to officers from their own
patrol car videos as they gasp for those final breaths of air after being gunned down by killers. For
Officer Laurie, with only two months on the job, the haunting sounds will be an unforgettable
reminder of the lessons he learned from the Fallen.
"In the academy, they teach you the basics," said Officer Laurie. "But this (Street Survival
Seminar) makes you more aware, and gives you the tools to develop a winning mind. Every police
officer in the country should come to one of these seminars."
He said some of the bad habits that turned deadly for officers in the videos reminded him of habits
he had seen in his co-workers. He planned to bring those to their attention when he got home.
"I think that's the greatest gift I can give them at this point -- tell them what I saw and learned here,"
he said. "These men and women are heroes and we honor them by learning from their sacrifice."

"It happened again this week. I came out of the office to find a flyer under my windshield wipers
inviting me to a special informational presentation on God and family values, and how to bring them
back to the forefront in America. I'm a parent so the flyer caught my interest. But as an analyst for
the Northeast Intelligence Network, my eyes were riveted to the address on the flyer: The session
was being held at a nearby mosque. Curiosity got the better of me, and I decided it would be a good
time for some onsite investigations of the mosque. In order to not attract undue attention, I dressed
conservatively, wearing a navy jumper with a long sleeve white blouse, and low heels. I debated
whether or not to put on a hijab (head scarf) then decided not to - after all, I was going to "learn

DOWNED OFFICER WON'T GIVE UP..

Matthew Livingstone scrawled the simple message on a notepad as he lay in a
hospital bed breathing from a respirator with a bullet lodged in his chest.
"I'll be back to work."
The Forest Hills policeman made the vow in a note to Mayor Ray Heller Jr. just days
after being gunned down Saturday night in the Braddock Hills Shopping Center
parking lot. The gunman escaped on foot as Livingstone, another Forest Hills
policeman and a Braddock Hills officer returned fire, police said. Police have no
suspects.
Livingstone, 26, joined the Forest Hills force five months ago. He is the third Forest
Hills policeman to be shot in less than two years. All three, including Officer Ed
Limbacher and Sgt. Edward Hinchey, remain off duty, but have said they want to
come back, Heller said Wednesday.

Life is what happens to us while we are making plans. It comes.. welcome or
not.. It must be dealt with or it will deal with us. My Eternal Captain said this is
how it be in this world but He went to great lengths to make it possible for us to
be able to deal with life here.. gain from the experiences of life here.. overcome
the experiences of life here.. for He had provided the way and means for victory
in and over this life and He gave simple instructions that any person could follow.
He loves Peace Keepers for we are His ministers of rightness in this world. He
wants to provide for each one so that life here will be successful for both Him
and US. The above is an expansion of a simple set of those instructions that
covers everything for each day.. and He did say to ask. If we do not ask.. or do
not know to ask.. we often come up short of what we needed. I spent most of my
life being able to recite the Lord's Prayer or the Our Father but at no point did
anyone take the time nor put in the effort to teach me what it meant nor how to use
it properly for each day.
I have been researching it, dissecting and examining it.. and receiving revelation
and benefit from it because I asked to be taught.. and I asked to be led in the paths
I should travel in order to do and be the most successful that I could be in this life.
I recognized that I did not create my gifts and abilities. I learned to practice and put
them to use.. but I did not make them.. I just used them. Even my calling of being
a Peace Keeper, in which I have been so blessed (happy to the point of being
envied by the world) and so successful, was not my doing but a response to
something that was there inside me that I could not explain to anyone else at the time.
This simple communication confirms that I do not know everything.. and that I do not
know anything about the day ahead.. and I am asking for Him to pilot me through
the course of the day.. and supply what I need for the day.. and never in the
course of my journey have I ever failed to have what I needed since I learned to ask
and cooperate.. and I have not had a guaranteed paycheck from any source since
1973.
He knows that I am a Peace Keeper for He called me (us) to that.. and we
responded.. we simply responded. Nothing else we tried to do met our internal
need. We had to be fulfilled.. and this great company of comrades was the place
and the calling where we experienced fulfillment.
We all have fallen short of training and expectations sometime, someplace.. and we
needed the way and means to get up and get on with the course before us. Many of
our downfalls were temptations we did not know about nor recognize.. until we were
trapped by the temptation and the experience it brought. That can be avoided if we
will learn.. but most of us insist upon learning our lessons the hard way.. especially
at first.. THEN IF WE ARE WISE WE ASK FOR HELP TO RECOGNIZE THE
TRAPS OF TEMPTATION AND LEARN HOW TO AVOID THEM!
..AND FORGIVING OTHERS.. EVEN ENEMIES WE MUST SOMETIMES KILL..
That is for our good. Holding grudges puts a power within us that hinders our peace
and prosperity. If we do not hold a grudge and just give up how we feel about the
cause of the grudge, the we have peace. The grudge never hurts nor hinders the
target of the grudge anyway. If he is an enemy and he must be resisted.. even
killed.. WE ARE BETTER ABLE TO HANDLE THE JOB IF WE ARE NOT
CONTROLLED BY ANGER.. FOR "HE WHO ANGERS YOU CONQUERORS YOU."
(comment from an instructor in a movie so very, very long ago that I have never
forgotten.).. That means that if someone else causes you to be hot tempered and
angry, that he has you under his influence.. and not under your own influence.. and
he can manipulate you to a greater or lesser extent. I can scream and shout to get
adrenaline pumping through my physical body.. but I can keep my mental and spiritual
attitudes cool and calculating in order to outsmart.. out perform the enemy of peace
and order with whom I must deal and who I am committed to controlling.
DELIVER ME, KEEP ME FREE FROM EVIL.. Evil is the very power that we are
acting against. Keeping that power from affecting us to our own detriment is the
goal for which we all must be striving as Peace Keepers. This is exactly in line and
agreement with our very purpose and our oath of officer whether law enforcement
or military..
ENLARGE MY TERRITORY.. the area and people I am trying to affect.. really
asking for more effective results for my efforts.. Sergeant Alvin York was one who
practiced this and he captured a whole company of enemy single handedly while his
comrades were pinned down under fire and unable to move. This request is
actually that for which we are striving if we are Peace Keepers in our own minds
and hearts.. We are simply asking the ultimate Peace Keeper for greater and
greater success.. without causing any pain we do not have to cause as we get
the job done. That is exactly in line with the instructions given to two soldiers who
came to John, known as the Baptist, when they asked him what they must do. He
did not tell them to quit being soldiers (law enforcers of their day). He told them to
be satisfied with their equipment, supplies and pay.. and to not do anything more to
anyone than they had to do to be Keepers of the Peace. If a word will do it.. don't
do more than that.. if force and pain is necessary then do that.. but if killing is
necessary.. then do that. Paul said that we do not bear and carry our weapons for
no reason but we are there to execute wrath upon the wrong doer.. (whatever is
necessary to stop the illegal action they are conducting and restore peace) by
taking the proper action according to the threat against PEACE. Our law allows
and expects you to use that amount of force.. and ONLY that amount of force..
that will quell the illegal action and restore peace.
THE RULE AND REIGN OF RIGHT IN THIS WORLD IS THE GOAL OF THE
PEACE KEEPER.. THE POWER IS SOMETHING WE USE BUT THE POWER
IS NOT OURS.. WE HAVE SIMPLY LEARNED HOW TO HARNESS IT AND PUT
IT TO GOOD AND PROPER USE..
..AND THE GLORY.. THE SUCCESS AND THE CREDIT.. IT IS NOT OURS
EITHER.. BECAUSE WE TOOK WHAT WAS MADE AVAILABLE TO US..
WE PUT IT TO THE BEST USE WE WERE CAPABLE OF.. WE COOPERATED
WITH THE RIGHT.. THE POWER OF PROVIDENCE.. AND THE PRECEPTS
THAT MAKE IT RIGHT BROUGHT THE PRINCIPLES OF RIGHT TO BEAR
UPON AND PUT DOWN THE RESISTANCE OF EVIL.. WE PREVAILED
BECAUSE WE LEARNED WHAT WAS RIGHT AND WE COOPERATED WITH
IT.. WE DID WHAT WE COULD DO AND RIGHT PREVAILED THROUGH US
AND OUR ACTIONS. WE LEARNED.. WE SAW.. WE ACTED.. AND
THROUGH THESE ACTIONS PEACE PREVAILS.
IT HAS ALWAYS BEEN THIS WAY.. EVIL CANNOT RULE WHERE GOOD MEN
EMPLOY THE POWER AND KNOWLEDGE OF PROVIDENCE TO PUT DOWN
EVIL.. SO LET THE GOOD.. THE USEFUL.. THE NECESSARY MIGHT.. FLOW
IN AND THROUGH ME (US) AS LONG AS I LIVE.. FOR THE WILL OF PEACE TO
FUNCTION IN MY (OUR) WORLD.. SO BE IT!!! (which is what amen means.)
As you read my introduction to each week's message, that introduction is filled with
the cost paid by Peace Keepers as they strive for peace in the world around them.
Each week there is something new to report.. and something old to bring to your
remembrance. No matter where your field of endeavor is.. no matter where you
are assigned.. no matter where you function, homeland or foreign field.. THE GOAL
IS THE SAME.. THE RIGHT ATTITUDE OF THE PEACE KEEPER MUST BE THE
SAME.. THE EFFORTS, SINGLY OR IN COMBINATION MUST BE THE SAME..
AND ALL OF YOU ARE THE RAW MATERIAL THAT WAS REFINED INTO
USEFUL PEOPLE WITH THE USEFUL MEANS AND METHODS TO BE
SUCCESSFUL IN PUTTING DOWN EVIL AND RESTORING PEACE TO THE
WORLD AROUND YOU.
I know the hell of some of it from experience. I know the hell of some of it because
of the places I have been, alone and also with some of you. I know the horrible
emptiness of loss.. standing by hospital beds.. or sitting in waiting rooms with your
loved ones.. or making that awful visit to your front doors with terrible news.. or
funeral homes.. and then open graves.. followed by emptiness indescribable as life
keeps coming and you feel like you are being run over by it.. and wondering, how
do I get through this horrible pain and emptiness (sometimes it feels like it will kill
you as well).. at some point anger will try to creep in.. hopelessness will try to creep
in.. depression and emptiness will try to take over and stay.. I have received the
destroyed body of a son sent home in a box.. I have experienced all of this with my
own and with yours.. DOES DISCOURAGEMENT EVER VISIT ME? YOU CAN
BET THAT IT DOES! DO I EVER EXPERIENCE EMPTINESS AND PAIN? YES
I HAVE.. AND IF I LIVE FOR VERY LONG I WILL EXPERIENCE STILL MORE
BECAUSE THAT IS WHAT LIFE THROWS AT US AS WE JOURNEY THROUGH
IT.. LIKE ROCKS AND HOLES IN A ROAD THAT CANNOT BE TRAVERSED..
LIKE SEEMINGLY IMPASSABLE FLOODS.. LIKE PAIN THAT WILL SURELY KILL
YOU, WILL SURELY BREAK YOUR HEART..
HOW HAVE I SURVIVED THIS LONG, LONG JOURNEY? (Just last Friday my
Captain said I was 110 years old.. my previous Chief many years ago said I had to
be 100 years old to have been able to do all I have done in this life.) I HAVE
SURVIVED BY GRACE (unmerited, UNDESERVED, unearnable favor) AND
KNOWLEDGE IMPARTED TO ME WHEN I ASKED TO BE TAUGHT. THE
PRECEDING PEACE KEEPER'S PRAYER IS A CONCISE STATEMENT OF
HOW I HAVE NOT ONLY SURVIVED BUT HAVE ENJOYED A GREAT DEGREE
OF WATCHING SUCCESS TAKE PLACE IN LIFE AROUND ME. What I learned
I put to use.. AND IT WORKED.. JUST AS IT HAD BEEN PROMISED THAT IT
WOULD WORK. Yes, I practice this daily for me.. and for YOU. When you read
this you may rest assured that you have been prayed for according to the best
knowledge I have been able to obtain.. and by the deepest desire that you would
receive the very best of whatever you need to make your Journey enjoyable and
even more so the further you journey through this life.
My prayer for you in this moment is for peace, health, strength, provision, power
and protection.. topped with the greatest of blessing.
This old warrior wishes for you the very best of the best and I pray to that end.
"BE CAREFUL OUT THERE!" I have spent time with law enforcers, soldiers,
sailors and flyers.. from the newest to the elite. No place, not even in the church,
have I found greater people than I have found among those who wear the uniforms
and do the duties of Peace Keepers. I have had the privilege to consort with all
levels and ranks from high to low. Nowhere have I ever experienced the greatness
and goodness I have found in and among you. It is one of the greatest joys of my
life to be among you.. and to personally know many of you. As we face the
unknown of the day together I say again.. BE ALERT, WATCHFUL AND
SUSPICIOUS.. BE WARY LIKE A FOX.. PAY ATTENTION TO YOUR INSTINCTS
FOR THEY CAN VERY WELL SAVE YOU. TAKE THE VERY BEST OF CARE
OF ALL ASPECTS OF YOU; PHYSICAL, MENTAL, EMOTIONAL AND
SPIRITUAL. THERE WILL BE TIMES YOU WILL NEED THEM ALL.. AND
NEED THEM TO BE AT PEAK EFFICIENCY. TRAIN.. TRAIN.. TRAIN..
PRACTICE.. PRACTICE.. PRACTICE.. BE READY.. FOR LIFE AND JOB
WILL TEST YOU TO SEE IF YOU ARE READY.
