RED CROSS - BLACKWATER FUNDRAISER AND SILENT AUCTION A HUGE SUCCESS!The American Red Cross and Blackwater USA co-sponsored a Gulf Region Relief fundraiser and silent auction at the Sheraton Oceanfront Hotel this past Friday night (Nov. 18) and raised over $138,000.00! Most of the money was raised was through corporate and individual sponsorships for the dinner, but last-minute silent auction bids on domestic and overseas trips, paintings, and many other items added to the total.Ambassador L. Paul Bremer, former Presidential Envoy to Iraq was the keynote speaker. His remarks were timely and poignant and earned him a standing ovation. Amb. Bremer's new book, "My Year In Iraq: The Struggle to Build a Future of Hope" will be in bookstores everywhere on January 10, 2006. Gary Jackson, Blackwater's president said, "Tonight was a success because it was about Americans helping Americans. The people who came out this evening demonstrated a kindness and compassion that exemplifies all that is good about the American spirit. Our great employees and our special relationship with Amb. Bremer and the Red Cross made it possible to pull off this event in about four weeks. Kudos to all of them." The struggle to fulfill relief needs continues. Please contact your local American Red Cross office to find out how you can further help.

Too Few Good MenBy DAN SENOR and WALTER SLOCOMBETHIS month, the Iraqi Ministry of Defense encouraged former officers in Saddam Hussein's army to apply for commissions in the country's new army. Much has been made of this initiative, which is sensible and welcome at a time when Sunni cooperation is crucial to Iraq's stability. But contrary to news reports, the announcement does not mark a policy change. To explain this requires a bit of history. When the American-led coalition "disbanded" the Iraqi Army in May 2003, it was simply recognizing the fact that the army had long since dissolved itself - in the Pentagon's jargon, "self-demobilized" - as the mass of (mostly Shiite) conscripts fled the brutality of their (mostly Sunni) officers. http://www.nytimes.com/2005/11/17/opinion/17senor.html?n=Top%2fOpinion%2fEditorials%20and%20Op%2dEd%2fOp%2dEd%2fContributors
When Is Force Excessive?By Thomas D. PetrowskiThe U.S. Supreme Court recently revisited the issue of excessive force and provided a significant ruling. Too often, it seems, news footage shows American law enforcement officers using force to effect an arrest or defend themselves. The sight of a sworn peace officer, who has taken an oath to serve and protect, using violence naturally appears inconsistent and inherently repulsive to any objective viewer who likely knows little of the realities of law enforcement. Naive commentary labeling the force used as excessive often accompanies such footage.1 But, when is force excessive? While some critics may be quick to characterize force as excessive, the law reflects the realities that officers face in making use-of-force decisions. The U.S. Supreme Court recently revisited this issue and provided a significant ruling. http://www.fbi.gov/publications/leb/2005/sept2005/sept05leb.htm#page27

HELP! I LEFT MY IDENTITY IN THE BACKSEAT OF A TAXI It was just a tiny thumb drive, but now, it's a pretty big problem for a Hawaii hospital. And what happened there could eventually become a problem for you, too. Last month, Wilcox Memorial Hospital in Kauai had to inform 120,000 past and present patients that their private information had been misplaced. Their names, addresses, Social Security numbers, even medical record numbers had been placed on one of those tiny USB flash drives -- and now, according to a letter sent home, the drive was missing. http://redtape.msnbc.com/2005/11/why_you_should_.html Jordanians Adjust to Increased Security There is a new way of life in Jordan: residents now have to be searched before they will be served. Since last week's deadly hotel bombings, metal detectors have been erected at restaurants and shopping centers, and body searches and ID checks have become routine. "I don't like it, but I'll just have to adjust and accept it," said 28-year-old shopper Roula Hijazi, who had to pass through a metal detector to enter Mecca Mall. "We have to make sure this kind of thing does not happen again." http://apnews.myway.com/article/20051117/D8DUE16O0.html
Baltimore May Monitor Stop-Frisk Tactic A soldier convicted of murdering unarmed Iraqis testified Thursday that he falsely implicated his platoon leader in one of the slayings so that he could get a lighter prison sentence. The startling testimony came at a military hearing to determine whether 2nd Lt. Erick J. Anderson should be court-martialed on murder charges. http://apnews.myway.com/article/20051117/D8DUFVQ8A.html

ITALY: ALGERIAN SUSPECTS ALLEGEDLY PLANNED TO KILL 10,000 The three Algerians detained on Tuesday in the Italian cities of Brescia and Naples were planning a massive terror attack - "on a ship as big as the Titanic, packed with explosives" - that aimed to kill "at least 10,000 people", as well as an attack on "Italian citizens and interests" in Tunisia, according phone conversations between the three men, which Italian anti-terror police say they intercepted after al-Qaeda's deadly 7 July attacks on London and on the Egyptian Red Sea resort of Sharm El-Sheikh. In their tapped phone conversations, Yamine Bouhrama, Mohamed Larbi and Khaled Serai described the 7 July London subway and bus bombings that killed over 50 and injured 700, and the 23 July Sharm El-Sheikh terror attacks that killed 90 people and injured over 150 as "highdays and holidays", according to police. The three also spoke of having "documents ready", "war on the infidel", and "a bigger party" than the London attacks. http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1524762/posts
Al-Zarqawi Threatens to Kill Jordan's King A MASKED man believed to be one of Asia's most wanted militants has warned Western countries – especially Australia – of more attacks. A video found last week by Indonesian anti-terrorist police video was broadcast on Metro TV today. Vice President Jusuf Kalla, quoted by the Kompas newspaper, said he believed the militant on the tape was Malaysian Noordin Top, a senior operative of Jemaah Islamiah, a Southeast Asian group seen as the regional arm of al-Qaida http://www.heraldsun.news.com.au/common/story_page/0,5478,17276164%255E661,00.html Safeguarding Emergency Responders During Major Disasters and Terrorist Attacks: The Need for an Integrated Approach Emergency response organizations are the nation’s first line of defense when disaster strikes. While their work is inherently dangerous on any scale, it becomes even more perilous in a major crisis, such as a terrorist attack or large-scale natural disaster. Emergency workers must be shielded from the increased health and safety risks they confront when responding to a catastrophe of this magnitude. http://www.rand.org/publications/RB/RB9044/ Terrorism FAQs http://www.cia.gov/terrorism/faqs.html

Service Equipment Review:SOG SCUBA/Demo KnifeSo, what does it take for something to be considered "rare"? I don't mean as in undercooked, but as in not very many of them around. Recently I received a SOG Knives Scuba Demo Knife in response to a request I put in to them. Why? Because I had read about the knife's history in Vietnam and I wanted to learn even more about it. Now, the first thing I learned is that "SOG" originally stood for Studies and Observation Group, which was an elite joint services military group designed for covert operations. Sanctioned to develop and purchase their own equipment, the original SOG created a knife for use in one of the harshest environments in the world.According to the information released by SOG Specialty Knives, only 39 of the original SCUBA/Demo knives were manufactured, and only one is known to still be in existance. 38 of the originals were reportedly delivered to the Naval Advisory Detachment, which were then issued to OPLAN 37 ALPHA in 1964. 36 were lost in operations and two have disappeared. Due to the truly unique nature of this particular knife design, SOG Specialty Knives revived it and sells it today in honor of the original. Let's take a closer look... Since I'm not in any kind of hurry, I have availed myself of local bicycle shops all over the country to test ride everything I could get my hands on, (one of the benefits of traveling for a living). One of the most spectacular bikes I've have the pleasure of riding is the Orbea Orca. The Orca is a full carbon fiber framed bike and is the flagship of the Orbea line. If you haven't been a bike nut for the past few years you probably haven't heard of Orbea. They are produced in Northern Spain, an area that is home to some 1,500 cycling clubs. If you were watching the Tour de France this year (Yeah, Lance won again...) you saw these bicycles under the Euskaltel-Euskadi Team. Obviously these aren't your Costco bikes assembled by some high school kid. The rest of the story: http://www.borelliconsulting.com/recevals/bike/orca.htm Frank Borelli
