Threat to kill Italian PM Berlusconi via suicide bomber.

Italian Prime Minster Silvio Berlusconi announced during an interview with Libero on November 3 that a suicide bomber was plotting to kill him at a soccer match. According to Berlusconi, Italian intelligence received a report the week prior that revealed a plan to organize a suicide bomb attack at an international soccer match in Milan. He accused his political rivals of heightening the risk of terrorist attacks by questioning his integrity. The interview came days after Berlusconi's statement that he tried to dissuade President Bush from invading Iraq, a claim that was derided by opposition politicians.

It's Still SNAFU for U.S. Intelligence Community

By David Isenberg
The release in March this year of the report of "The Commission on the Intelligence Capabilities of the United States Regarding Weapons of Mass Destruction" was heralded as an important first step in helping the intelligence community to make the necessary changes to deal with critical security challenges, such as the proliferation of nuclear, biological and chemical weapons and international terrorism.
It is critical and urgent that lessons from the WMD intelligence failures over Iraq are completed if we are to avoid similar mistakes leading to a far greater and all-consuming conflict with Iran in the foreseeable future.

The Dog's Best Friend: Visual Trackers

Anyone who has worked with dogs on a human pursuit probably has many stories
to tell.  Many of the stories will reflect the skill of the handler and the
determination of the dog to stay on the trail no matter how challenging the
conditions.  Hopefully they end with a successful find.  Regardless of how
many successes they have had, there may be a time or two when things did not
go so well.  Dogs are a tremendous asset on a search, but they are not
infallible. Even when the search ends well one can always ask: could we have
been faster, more efficient?

    Iraq insurgency 101
A security alert in New York's subways. A major speech by President Bush. A purported letter from one of the world's top terrorists to another. There's a common thread to all these stories -- the Iraqi insurgency.
The dubious tip about the alleged threat in New York came from Iraq; the president's speech about Islamic terrorism was provoked by the fighting in Iraq. And the purported letter from al Qaeda's number two, Ayman al-Zawahiri, was addressed to Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, the leading foreign fighter in Iraq, and now the head of al Qaeda there.

CIA holds terror suspects in secret prisons
Debate grows within agency about legality, morality of approach
The CIA has been hiding and interrogating some of its most important al Qaeda captives at a Soviet-era compound in Eastern Europe, according to U.S. and foreign officials familiar with the arrangement.
The secret facility is part of a covert prison system set up by the CIA nearly four years ago that at various times has included sites in eight countries, including Thailand, Afghanistan and several democracies in Eastern Europe, as well as a small center at the Guantanamo Bay prison in Cuba, according to current and former intelligence officials and diplomats from three continents.

U.S. misses many post-9/11 security deadlines
Bush administration lags in meeting goals to protect ships, airplanes, trains

The Bush administration has missed dozens of deadlines set by Congress after the Sept. 11 attacks for developing ways to protect airplanes, ships and railways from terrorists.
A plan to defend ships and ports from attack is six months overdue. Rules to protect air cargo from infiltration by terrorists are two months late. A study on the cost of giving anti-terrorism training to federal law enforcement officers who fly commercially was supposed to be done more than three years ago.

US may extend troops' Iraq stay
he United States is considering keeping combat-hardened troops in Iraq beyond their scheduled tour of duty to beef up forces battling to quell the worst violence since the fall of Saddam Hussein a year ago.
New flashpoints flared up across Iraq yesterday as US- led forces faced a two-front war against Sunni Muslim guerillas and Shiite militiamen. http://www.theage.com.au/articles/2004/04/08/1081326867943.html?from=storyrhs

US troops shoot to kill shadows on Syria-Iraq border
AL-QAIM, Iraq (AFP) - Insurgents fighting the US-led coalition in Iraq remain active in this small town on the border with Syria, despite repeated military sweeps aimed at flushing them out.
US military commanders believe the Euphrates valley is the main pathway for foreign insurgents entering Iraq to commit acts of terrorism. And Al-Qaim is the border gateway to the valley.

    FRANKS REVIEW

    Service Equipment Review:

    Gerber Silver Trident Combat Knife

"Gerber Legendary Blades" isn't just a company name or phrase: it's also a statement of fact. I've been carrying Gerber knives since before I went in the Army and have continued to do so ever since. I was far more familiar with the folding lockblades that this company made, and then a friend of mine introduced me to some of their fixed blade models. Recently I was lucky enough to be gifted with a Gerber Silver Trident, and that is the topic of this review.

Now I have to admit that at first I thought it was quite arrogant for a company to name a knife after a symbol long known as special; a symbol that only a select few got to wear; a symbol that is recognizable world wide because of the inspiration its bearers have provided to tales told, stories written, and movies made. Everywhere in the world you'll find people who recognize the emblem of the United States Navy SEALs. After researching the history of the knife's development, and testing its performance capabilities, I didn't feel it was quite so arrogant.

    Recreational Equipment Review:

    NRA Outdoorsman Knife by Benchmade

As a police officer I carried my share of Benchmade knives. Before I could afford them (when I was a rookie starting out) I envied those who did have them. When I made enough money to invest in one, I bought several. "The grass is always greener..." Every time I bought one Benchmade folding lockblade, I always wanted another one. It was cooler. It was smaller. It was bigger. It had a reversible clip. I always had a reason. But one thing never changed: Benchmade makes good knives.

And for the longest time I couldn't figure out why Benchmade had so few fixed blade knives. There seemed no answer, but there was also no shortage of folders, so I could hardly complain. Recently Benchmade began expanding its line of fixed blade knives, and to my surprise, one of them was made specifically for the National Rifle Association: the NRA Snody.

    THE COST OF LIBERTY

One thought is always on my mind.  If it is not in my conscious thoughts, it is just below
the surface percolating in my subconscious... THE COST OF LIBERTY.

Today as I thought on this subject I decided to check and see if anyone else ever
thought to compile the information.   Someone had.  I found it on the U.S. Civil War
    Center
web site in relation to the human costs of all of our war involvement.  The
information is staggering.  I could not get to the NLEOMF web site either this week
nor last week so for them I will be quoting from memory.

First the costs of this week...
