FAMOUS CONTRACTORS THAT SUPPORTED AMERICA'S DEFENSE
Read about a new hero each week:
MARQUIS DE LAFAYETTE
Lafayette was a junior officer in the French army when in 1777, he defied his family and the orders of the King Louis XVI, and sailed to the American colonies. He volunteered to serve in the American army at his own expense, and at age 20, received the rank of Major General from Congress. His date of rank was 7 December 1776, when he signed up with the American representative in Paris.

Sudan
From our friends at the Terrorism Research Center - http://www.terrorism.com
Two African Union peacekeepers from Nigeria and two civilian contractors have been killed in an ambush in Sudan's Darfur region. Three other soldiers were wounded in Saturday's attack in southern Darfur.
The sixth round of the Darfur peace talks currently underway in the Nigerian (Country Profile) capital of Abuja appear to have little direct relation to the situation on the front lines. Breakaway factions of Sudan's (Country Profile) three principle parties have been escalating both the scope and frequency of violent attacks for over a month, thereby rendering the ceasefire dead in all but name. Additionally, within the past week, the roles of both the African Union (AU) and United Nations have been jeopardized, leaving the Darfur conflict in its most perilous state since the conflict erupted in 2003.
The fifth round of peace negotiations ended on July 5, 2005 after representatives of the Sudan Liberation Movement (SLM) (Group Profile), Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) (Group Profile), and the National Unity Government of Sudan signed a declaration of broad principles and pledged to adhere to a ceasefire. Yet, in the run-up to the sixth round, Darfur rebel representatives publicly expressed their hesitancy to attend based on internal SML leadership struggles, which have subsequently exploded out in the frontier.

RESCUE
By Ben Van Etten
There are certain dates in a lifetime of events that stay etched in your memory. I can vividly remember, for example, my wedding day, where I was the day that JFK was assassinated, and other events important to my family. Another time was the 18th of March 1972.
I was the pilot on an H-34D helicopter for Air America, Inc. It started as a routine flight from Udorn, Thailand to Pakse, Laos. My passengers were mainly flight crews "dead heading" up country for a crew rotation. I was scheduled to remain six days in Pakse.

SIMUNITION®: A Dangerously Ambiguous Term
Ken Murray
Reality Based Training Columnist
Law Officer Magazine
While a West Coast special response team prepared for a realistic training exercise, the trainers told the team members, "Bring your 'sims' kit, and grab a box of 'simmunitions' on your way out."
During the actual training exercise, one of the participants was experiencing chronic weapon malfunctions. When a trainer came over to investigate the problem, he discovered the team member had grabbed a box of SIMUNITION®'s Greenshield® frangible ammunition instead of its FX® marking cartridges.

Illegal immigrants arrested on military bases
Scores of illegal aliens seized, raising security questions
Scores of illegal immigrants working as cooks, laborers, janitors, even foreign-language instructors have been seized at military bases around the country in the past year, raising concerns in some quarters about security and troop safety.
The immigrants did not work directly for the military but for private contractors, as part of a large-scale effort by the Pentagon to outsource many routine rear-echelon jobs and free up the troops to concentrate on waging war.

Unisys charged TSA up to $131 an hour for lower-level workers, audit says
Federal auditors say the prime contractor on a $1 billion technology contract to improve the nation's transportation security system overbilled taxpayers for as much as 171,000 hours' worth of labor and overtime by charging up to $131 an hour for employees who were paid less than half that amount.
Three years ago, the Transportation Security Administration hired Unisys Corp. to create a state-of-the-art computer network linking thousands of federal employees at hundreds of airports to the TSA's high-tech security centers.

FRANKS REVIEW |
Service Equipment Review:
The K5 Tactical Tomahawk
Courtesy of Al Garcia
While attending the 2005 TWO-counter terror conference in Virginia Beach this past August, I had the pleasure of meeting K5 Tactical owner Eddie Killian. Eddie was standing at his booth in one of the vendor areas. I walked up, introductions were made, and after that he told me a little about himself and his "Hawks". The first thing I liked about Eddie was his honesty about how and why his Tomahawks came to be. He simply told me that he really liked tactical tomahawks so he set out to build a "one off " super tough hawk for himself. What he came up with was in his opinion good enough to duplicate and sell to the general public, and after testing one of his tomahawks, I definitely concur.
It didn't take long after handling the K5 "Tac-Hawk" to figure out that in terms of pragmatic genius, Eddie is samurai caliber when it comes to tomahawk design and construction. His tomahawks are quite possibly the most rugged production tomahawks ever designed. These monsters are PURPOSELY made to use and abuse. There is obvious premeditation to Eddie's genius when he created these tools and that was to put an implement in an operators hands that could stand up to just about anything one could throw at it. I am super impressed with this piece of equipment.

Recreational Equipment Review:
Blackwater Gear for Hunting & Fishing?
It wasn't that long ago that I was attending a counter-terrorism conference, and a representative from Blackwater walked over and asked, "How come you write so much for Blackwater but you have never written about the Blackwater Gear line?" My answer, quite simply, was, "Because I haven't had any of it to test." Is that arrogant? Yes, and no. Given that I write equipment evaluations for Blackwater, some would expect me to have nothing but GREAT to say about the Blackwater Gear line. Those of you who have read some of my rants know that I refuse to write anything that I can't test first hand.
Less than two weeks later a box arrived at my house with some Blackwater Gear in it. In the box were a non-ballistic MOLLE compatible vest, and several utility pouches designed for various purposes. NOT in the box were things like a double-magazine pouch, holster, grenade pouch, etc. The things I received were for general purpose. Oddly enough, I had never before considered using Blackwater Gear for anything but duty purposes and here I was with a collection of stuff that wouldn't do me any good on duty. Being the imaginative guy that I am (a little pat on the back for Frank there), I put together a vest that I felt was well suited for outdoor use hiking, hunting, fishing, etc. Let's take a look at what was on the vest, how I used each piece, and how it performed.

v.t. - to undergo; to feel; to endure; to encounter; (and to retain for

Last night and today I rode into Iraq with First Battalion, 5th Marine
Regiment and
Chaplain (Lt.) Carey H. Cash via his book about preparation for and
entry into Iraq
in March of 2003. His book is entitled, A TABLE IN THE PRESENCE.
Through vivid imagery I experienced all that he experienced with his
God and his
assigned duty to minister to and for the members of the Marines and
those other
military units assigned to work with the Marines. It was a gut
wrenching experience...
and one that makes me wish I was young enough and able to do the same
duty...
but I cannot, so I do the best I can... I sit here weekly and write...
and work as I can
with the Peace Keepers whom I might meet through the writing and work
with the
Peace Keepers to which I am assigned here in the City of Virginia Beach.
Someone along my journey to here said something I thought to be
profound when I
first heard it... "There are no atheists in foxholes and gun fights."
