Flying With the Tigers

A secretly recruited group of American pilots led by a former aerobatics performer achieved hero status in two nations during World War II and won a permanent place in the annals of aviation history.
The handful of American pilots who scorched earth and sky in defense of China were officially known as the American Volunteer Group (AVG), but, of course, are best remembered as the "Flying Tigers"--the English translation of Fei Hou. The nickname was bestowed by the grateful Chinese after the American pilots attacked a large number of Japanese fighters over Kunming on December 20, 1941. In just seven months of intense aerial combat, the AVG earned a lasting niche in aviation history, reportedly destroying nearly 300 Japanese aircraft for the loss of only 69 planes.

No Qaeda Link Seen in Bali Suicide Bombings

From our friends at The Terrorsim Research Center: http://www.terrorism.com
Indonesia's counterterrorism forces say the suspected suicide bombers who carried out the attack in Bali last Saturday appear to have been a small group with no prior criminal record or link to a large organization like Al Qaeda, giving the case echoes of the London subway bombings in July.

Jihadi Debate

WHEN Iraq's most notorious terrorist, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, declared a "full-scale war" on Iraq's Shiites on Sept. 14, he appeared to be speaking for all or most jihadis. But Mr. Zarqawi's war on Shiites is deeply unpopular in some quarters of his own movement. In fact, growing splits among jihadis are beginning to undermine the theological and legal justifications for suicide bombing. And as that emerging schism takes its toll on the jihadi movement, it could well present an opportunity for Western governments to combat jihadism itself.

Technological Over-Reliance

As a society, we live in a technologically advanced era.  Nearly everything is faster than it was two decades ago.  Everywhere one turns there is a faster alternative to what was ‘new to the market’ just last year.  Even those of us in law enforcement are inundated with technological advancements.  On board computer systems, advanced radio systems, global positioning systems, and so many other advancements in crime detection and prevention have made law enforcement a profession, not just a job.  The downside to this paradigm is the over-reliance on technology and a trend of abandonment of good old-fashioned policing.

BREAKING NEWS FOR THE PROFESSIONAL
Darfur aid may halt after AU hostage-taking
U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan on Monday warned that U.N. aid to Darfur could be suspended after the "completely unacceptable" hostage-taking of African Union monitors by rebel dissidents in Sudan's western region.
In Sudan, an AU spokesman said Darfur rebels had released 36 African Union monitors kidnapped on Sunday, but were still holding two more.

Explosives Found Near Tech Dorms
Three explosive devices found in a courtyard between two Georgia Tech dormitories on the East Campus Monday morning were part of a "terrorist act," an Atlanta police official said.
One of the devices exploded, injuring the custodian who found them inside a plastic bag. Two others were detonated by a bomb squad.

Honor those who fight domestic war on terror
The murder raid of Sept. 11 not only devastated downtown Manhattan, it wiped a certain kind of America off of the map of the planet. Suddenly, like so many other places in the world, America was the target of ruthless, self-righteous, suicidal killers. These were threatening men swept up in their distortions of a religion they thought gave them the right to do whatever they wished to those cursed by being inside of a decadent society.
These were the most brutal murderers imaginable because, as they had proven all over the world, all available people were targets and would be killed if they got a chance to do their stuff - man, woman and child. No exceptions.

Bali prison stormed by protesters
With cries of "Kill them, Kill them!" an angry crowd marked the third anniversary of the 2002 Bali nightclub bombings by storming a prison in Indonesia where three men convicted of the attacks were being held.
Armed police intervened as a group of between 500 and 1,000 protestors - wearing traditional Balinese headscarves and sarongs - climbed the outer fence of the aging Kerobokan prison in the island's capital Denpasar. http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,3-1822462,00.html

Seized Letter Outlines Al Qaeda Goals in Iraq
Al Qaeda's top deputy urged the leader of his Iraq branch in July to prepare for the inevitable U.S. withdrawal by carrying out political as well as military actions, and he lectured him that he risked being shunned by an Islamic world angered over his gruesome and not "palatable" killings of fellow Muslims, according to an intercepted letter released yesterday by the U.S. government.
The 6,000-word letter from Osama bin Laden's chief lieutenant, Ayman Zawahiri, to Iraqi insurgent leader Abu Musab Zarqawi amounts to a detailed portrait of al Qaeda's long-term goals in Iraq and the Middle East, and includes a striking critique of how Zarqawi has gone about waging his war against not only U.S. troops but also Iraqi civilians. The letter was posted yesterday on the Web site of Director of National Intelligence John D. Negroponte -- http://www.dni.gov -- after senior intelligence officials released excerpts of it last week.

    Emergency Declared After Anti-Nazi Riots
Emergency Declared After Anti-Nazi Riots A crowd protesting a white supremacists' march Saturday turned violent, throwing baseball-sized rocks at police, vandalizing vehicles and stores, and setting fire to a neighborhood bar, authorities said.
When Mayor Jack Ford and a local minister tried to calm the rioting, they were cursed for allowing the march, and Ford said a masked gang member threatened to shoot him.

Al Qaeda "barber" arrested in Iraq
U.S. forces in Iraq said on Saturday that they were holding a man suspected of acting as a barber to senior al Qaeda militants and helping them change their appearance to evade capture.
The man, named as Walid Muhammad Farhan Juwar al-Zubaydi -- "aka 'The Barber,"' the U.S. military statement said -- was arrested in Baghdad on September 24, the day before U.S. troops caught up with and killed a militant they described as the most senior al Qaeda leader in the capital, Abu Azzam.

Iran Issues Charges Against U.K., U.S.
Iran launched a double-barreled diplomatic assault on Britain and America on Sunday, accusing London of possible involvement in weekend bombings that killed five people and charging that Washington was bent on hauling Tehran before the U.N. Security Council over its nuclear program.
Iranian Interior Minister Mostafa Pourmohammadi said he believed the Saturday blasts that tore into a shopping center in Ahvaz near the Iraqi border were "a continuation of previous explosions that were guided from abroad," state-run radio reported.

U.S. nabs al-Qaida Web site producer
Propaganda site was unusually quiet during weekend referendum

The Web site run by al-Qaida in Iraq was strangely quiet during the referendum on the new Iraqi constitution. There were no threats against voters, no boasts of disrupting the vote.
And now we know one reason why. A top propaganda agent for al-Qaida in Iraq, known as Abu Dijana, was captured shortly before the vote, according to the U.S. military. Abu Dijana was responsible for much of what has appeared on the Web site called "al-Qaida in Iraq," including provocative videos of suicide bombings and crucial communications to al-Qaida fighters.

    FRANKS REVIEW

    Service Equipment Review:

The Glock 26 Compact 9mm Pistol

Alright; everyone who's been reading my reviews for more than a couple months knows that I'm a Glock fan. I (personally) like to carry defensive weapons in 9mm or .45ACP caliber, but feel comfortable with anything in the 9mm, .357Sig, .40S&W, 10mm, .45ACP, .45GAP variety. As a police officer I feel duty-bound - and priviledged in some states - to be armed anytime I leave my house. In the summer, that isn't always easy.
With the Glock 26 - a combat 9mm pistol that holds ten rounds in the magazine and still fits in the palm of my hand - it's a little easier. I recently turned down two offers from brother police officers who were wanting to purchase my G26. Why? Well... it's just the most convenient gun that I own; it's a "working" caliber; it's accurate (especially in light of its diminuitive size); and it's easy to maintain. How easy to maintain? If I don't abuse it, I can keep it clean with dishsoap and hot water. Yeah, you read that right...

    Recreational Equipment Review

The Buck Strider SBMF Folding Lockblade Knife

No matter where you may go in the field: camping, hiking, backpacking, biking, boating, etc., you should always have a knife. In fact, I had an uncle that once told me, "Never leave the house without the ability to hunt food, clean food and cook food." Now I prefer guns for hunting, but if you fish or spear (using a knife on a pole) you still have to be able to clean it and cook it. This week's review of the Buck Strider SBMF (Strider Buck Military Folder) will (I hope) demonstrate that it's perfectly capable of the cleaning and other chores.

LIFE IS ARBITRARY AND CANNOT BE AVOIDED..OUR COMMANDER-IN-CHIEF IS MERCIFUL TO US, HE MAKES PROVISION WHEN WE REQUEST IT AS WE ARE INSTRUCTED TO DO!

    PEACE KEEPING...
    means getting involved...

"Why bother with other people's agonies when you have your own to keep you
    company?"
... a comment made on an episode of one of my favorite tv programs
    dating from my youth...

It reminded me of all of the Peace Keepers that I ever met... most especially all of
those whom I personally knew.  It also reminded me of the starring characters in
all of my favorite programs, movies, books and comics.  They were cowboys,
troops of all the branches of service, sheriffs, marshals, Mounties... and a group
called the BLACKHAWK SQUADRON who traveled the world putting down
insurgents and enemies of peace.  At first they flew P38's... then Sabre Jets...
but then because of girls, cars and motorcycles I outgrew my heroes... that is until
I was a father with a family of my own... then I found them again in movies, tv
programs and books... and on duty as a Peace Keeper myself... but by then the
BLACKHAWK SQUADRON comics had disappeared and I never saw them again.

Where does all of that fit with the opening statement?  I never knew a hero that did
not have troubles and/or problems of their own... but they all left those things for later
