US detains man over links to Lashkar-e-Taiba

US authorities on Friday said they had arrested a man on charges of providing support to Lashkar-e-Taiba, a Pakistan-based jihadi group which has been named a terrorist organisation by the United States. Ali Asad Chandia was arrested late on Thursday at College Park, in the Maryland suburbs of the US capital, said Assistant Attorney General Alice Fisher in a statement. Chandia and a Briton, Mohammed Ajmal Khan, face a four-count indictment on charges of providing support to Lashkar-e-Taiba.

    Jihad's Fellow Travelers

Members of the West European and North American elite class approach the war on terrorism in a schizophrenic manner. Their world view rejects any possibility that religious faith can be a prime motivating factor in human affairs. Having reduced religion, literature and art to "narratives" and "metaphors" which merely reflect prejudices based on the distribution of power, the elite class treats the jihadist mindset as a pathology that should be treated by treating causes external to Islam itself.

The result is a plethora of proposed "cures" that are as likely to succeed in making us safe from terrorism as snake oil is likely to cure leukemia. Abroad, we are told, we need to address political and economic grievances of the impoverished masses, we need to spread democracy and free markets in the Muslim world, we need to invest more in public diplomacy. At home we need more tolerance, greater inclusiveness, less profiling, and a more determined outreach to the minorities that feel marginalized and threatened by the war on terror. The failure of such "cures" leads to ever more pathological self-examination and morbid self doubt. If the spread of jihad is not due to the ideology of jihad itself, which it cannot be, then it must be our own fault.
Already with the Rushdie affair 17 years ago an ominous pattern was set. It has been replicated on both sides of the Atlantic ever since. It has three key ingredients:

Abizaid Details al Qaeda's Long-Term Goals

    By Jim Garamone
Al Qaeda terrorists hope to drive American influence from the Middle East and install a global Muslim leader in Saudi Arabia, Army Gen. John Abizaid said today.
Speaking during Senate testimony, Abizaid, chief of U.S. Central Command, said al Qaeda's objectives are clear. "They believe in a jihad, a jihad to overthrow the legitimate regimes in the region," he said. "In order to do that, they first must drive America from the region."
Al Qaeda believes the most important prize is Saudi Arabia, which is home to the holy shrines in Mecca and Medina. If al Qaeda terrorists manage to take control of Saudi Arabia, they will try to create and expand their influence in the region and establish a caliphate, Abizaid said.

More Abu Ghraib Photos Ordered Released
A federal judge ordered the release Thursday of dozens more pictures of prisoners being abused at Abu Ghraib, rejecting government arguments that the images would provoke terrorists and incite violence against U.S. troops in Iraq. U.S. District Judge Alvin K. Hellerstein said that terrorists "do not need pretexts for their barbarism" and that suppressing the pictures would amount to submitting to blackmail.

How to Improve U.S. Disaster Response
A disaster expert examines the lessons of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita and what needs to be done to prevent another catastrophe

Hurricane Rita swept across the Gulf Coast this weekend, downing power lines, destroying homes, and dumping several inches of water in some parts of Louisiana and Texas. The destruction caused by Rita was not as bad as some had feared; it largely spared Houston and reflooding occurred only in some areas of New Orleans, which officials said could be pumped dry within a week. Still, while Rita was less devastating than Hurricane Katrina-which caused an estimated $35 to $60 billion in damage and resulted in at least 1,000 deaths-both revealed how vulnerable the United States is to disaster.

Indonesia Warns of More Terrorist Attacks
Indonesia said Sunday it suspected two fugitives linked to al-Qaida masterminded the suicide bombings of crowded restaurants in tourist areas of Bali that killed at least 26 people and injured more than 100. The nation's president, meanwhile, warned that more terrorist attacks are possible.
"The terrorists are still looking for soft targets," President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said at a press conference after touring the devastated areas on the Indonesian island.

Soldiers still waiting for armor reimbursements
Pentagon fails to figure out how to pay back troops' personal expenditures

Nearly a year after Congress demanded action, the Pentagon has still failed to figure out a way to reimburse soldiers for body armor and equipment they purchased to better protect themselves while serving in Iraq.
Soldiers and their parents are still spending hundreds and sometimes thousands of dollars for armor they say the military won't provide. One U.S. senator said Wednesday he will try again to force the Pentagon to obey the reimbursement law it opposed from the outset and has so far not implemented.

Egypt gets tough in Sinai after resort attacks
Officials focus on local group; others see signs of outside aid

Dozens of big, green prisoner-transport vans lined the highway, rolling east from the Suez Canal into the desert dunes and crags of the Sinai Peninsula. In this land populated mostly by nomads and goats, police checkpoints dotted the roads.
The foray of troops and police forces into Sinai in September represented the Egyptian government's continuing response to the bombings of hotels, tourist camps, parking lots and marketplaces during the past year in Taba and Sharm el-Sheikh, two resort towns on Sinai's Red Sea coast.

African Union says Sudan attacking civilians
Troops accused of 'coordinated attacks' with Janiaweed Arab militia

The African Union has accused Sudanese government forces of attacking civilians in Darfur, committing acts of "calculated and wanton destruction" that have killed at least 44 people and displaced thousands more during the past two weeks.
Government forces have also painted their military vehicles in the white colors of the African Union cease-fire monitors "in violation of all established norms and conventions," the chief African Union envoy to Sudan, Ambassador Baba Gana Kingibe, told a press conference in the Sudanese capital on Saturday.

    Service Equipment Review:

    BlackHawk CQC Tactical SERPA Holster

Regular readers know that I recently spent two weeks in New Orleans working on contract for Blackwater. One of the things I took with me was my own gunbelt. One of the things I wish I'd had on my gunbelt is the BlackHawk CQC Tactical SERPA Holster. I have reviewed the CQC SERPA holster in the past and was quite impressed with its versatility, strength and performance. BlackHawk has taken that same basic design, strengthened it even more, installed additional protection for the weapon, and mounted on a well-thought out thigh platform.

When I first discussed the Tactical SERPA with BlackHawk representatives - while it was still in the developmental stages in fact - I told them that one of my biggest discomforts with other very popular tactical holsters was the platform itself. I found most of them too stiff, which meant either my leg didn't fit into them or my leg didn't fill them. Either causes an issue with enough activity. Another platform I've grown comfortable with is very soft and didn't provide any method for adding a knife or magazine pouch to the platform itself. I was assured that both issues were being addressed in the CQC Tactical SERPA design and indeed, BlackHawk has addressed them well.

    Recreational Equipment Review:

    Citizen ProMaster 200M Dive Watch

"Two is one; one is none" is a phrase often heard voiced by people who train those folks who operate in dangerous environments. The reason for that is because when you work in hazardous environments you really don't want to put all your faith in one piece of equipment. If it fails either you're in trouble or your mission fails. Scuba diving, as much as it's a recreational activity, does carry some level of risk. People sometimes drown. People sometimes get decompression sickness. You have to be careful about your depth and time under water so as to avoid potentially dangerous mistakes.

To do that most recreational divers use a depth gauge and a bottom timer. In today's world they are most often combined into a Dive Computer. On my console I have a depth gauge, pressure gauge, and compass. On my right wrist I wear a dive computer that tells me depth and bottom time (time since I went under water) and time remaining before I have to worry about decompression. On my left wrist I wear my backup: a Citizen ProMaster 200M Dive Watch that shows me elapsed time and depth in 2.5 foot increments. Two is one; one is none.
