The bookshop on Bude Street never opened for business last week. The sign on the whitewashed storefront says IQRA THE LEARNING CENTRE, but Muslim neighbors in the trash-strewn south Leeds district of Beeston say the place is almost always closed. Some don't think it's a proper bookshop at all. They say that the young men who frequented the place were running a radical Islamist indoctrination center. "I don't know what they were trying to do," said a local schoolteacher who was afraid to be quoted by name, "but they took a lot of young, free people who were clubbing and dancing, and they changed them."

$1B sought for rail securityCalling the rails the "terrorist target of choice," some Democrats, including New York Sens. Charles Schumer and Hillary Rodham Clinton, pushed yesterday to add $1 billion for transit and rail security to a Homeland Security spending bill.Democrats complained that the Bush administration and federal Homeland Security officials haven't done enough to address rail security and said the train bombings last week in London and last year in Madrid should serve as a wake-up call. http://www.newsday.com/news/printedition/nation/ny-ushome134341465jul13,0,379565.story?coll=ny-nationalnews-print Victims to Confront Clinic Bomber Rudolph Emily Lyons, critically injured in a 1998 blast outside a Birmingham abortion clinic, has a message for confessed bomber Eric Rudolph: His crimes only made her stronger. Are you ready? Tomorrow you will be in Paradise . . . What motivates a suicide bomber? Our correspondent talks to a young Muslim who survived his intended 'martyrdom' and describes the terrorists' rigorous training AT DAWN, when the three men heard the morning call to prayer from a mosque in the village below their hideout in the hills, they knelt and uttered the traditional invocation to Allah that Muslim warriors make before setting off for combat. They put on clean clothes, tucked the Koran into their pockets, and began the long hike over the hills and along dry riverbeds to the outskirts of Jerusalem. http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,7-1692606,00.html
"Saudi Bar on Foreign Guards" Much of the global sea traffic passes through a few select international maritime waterways, straits and canals. The cost and responsibility for maintaining, policing and managing these waterways are borne by the littoral states concerned--most of which are developing countries. There are three levels at which canal and strait security is problematic: The international legal framework governing some of these waterways (for the Bosphorus, Suez and Panama in particular) recognizes the sovereign rights of littoral states, but simultaneously limits their powers. http://www.forbes.com/home/2005/07/13/maritime-security-waterways-cx_0713oxan_maritime.html Suicide bombs become potent tools for terror Deadly attacks have been increasing, spreading since 9/11 Unheard of only a few decades ago, suicide bombings have rapidly evolved into perhaps the most common method of terrorism in the world, moving west from the civil war in Sri Lanka in the 1980s to the Palestinian intifada of recent years to Iraq today. Since the Sept. 11, 2001, suicide attacks in the United States, suicide bombers have struck from Indonesia to India, from Russia to Morocco. Now governments throughout the West - including the United States - are bracing to cope with similar challenges in the wake of the deadly July 7 subway bombings in London, which marked the first time that suicide bombers had successfully mounted an attack in Western Europe. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/8599758/ London Bombers Have Ties to United States Phone Records Show Link to Suspected Terror Recruiter One of the bombers in last week's attacks made a direct phone call to a suspected recruiter for an extremist group in New York. Authorities told ABC News that records show Mohammed Sidique Khan, the eldest of the bombers now believed to be the field commander of the attacks, had called a person who is associated with the Islamic Center, a mosque in Queens, N.Y. Yet, a member of that mosque claimed they had no knowledge of the phone call. http://abcnews.go.com/WNT/LondonBlasts/story?id=943648&page=1

| FRANKS REVIEW |
Tactical Equipment Review:ALS Technologies: Twelve Gauge Less-Lethal MunitionsIn the same box that last week's reviewed 37mm munitions was a collection of 12 gauge less-lethal munitions as well. Since I'm much more familiar with operating a shotgun than I am a 37mm munitions launcher, testing was easier. In the box were several rounds of each of the following: Pen-Prevent Tail Stabilized; Rubber Fin Rocket, Stabilized; OC Rubber Fin Stab Rocket; OC Muzzleblast; Hydro-Kynetic, Impact Bag; Aerial Pest Control; and Bore Thunder. If you're like I was, those names didn't always give me an idea of the purpose of each round. Sure, I understood "OC Muzzleblast", but "Pen-Prevent" didn't immediately strike understanding in me. Two things had to happen before I could start to shoot, measure, review and evaluate. First, I had to figure out what I was supposed to be seeing downrange. Second, I had to learn enough about the expected results to make sure I knew what environmental conditions I had to worry about. After all, testing an OC Muzzleblast round by shooting it into the wind might be a bad idea. So, that in mind, I got online to do some research; talked to some friends of mine who do know about such things; and I (you'll like this one) read the information provided by ALS Technologies about their products. I've reviewed my fair share of hydration systems from various manufacturers. Although it's a competitive market - especially where military equipment is involved due to the on-going evolution of gear in that arena - it's difficult to objectively choose one manufacturers products as always better than "the other guys". Depending on the environment and mission, different hydration systems might be better suited to the need. Outside of military and police operations, the need for specific features can be relaxed even more. I mean, all of these systems are designed to provide you two things (typcially): 1) water to drink in an easily carried and accessed manner, and 2) some storage space for food or other necessities. If the system provides you other features beyond that, in a recreational setting, the value of those features is dependent on your activity. The best hydration system for bicycling probably isn't the same as the best hydration system for rock climbing. This week I'm reviewing BlackHawk's HydraStorm Matrix: a hydration system / pack that was specifically designed for climbing work. The cool part (at least to me) was that HydraStorm specifically designed the system / pack to be of equal value to the recreational climber / backpacker as to the mountain rescue worker. I HAVE ALTERED THE MESSAGE TO SAY WHAT I WOULD SAY TO YOU AND ANYONE ELSE WHO MIGHT LISTEN. I HAVE HAD TOO MUCH EXPERIENCE WITH THIS SUBJECT AND I KNOW.. I KNOW. ============================================================== Subject: YOU.. NOW.. (altered by DRS) [;-)] A man opened his wife's underwear drawer and picked up a silk paper wrapped package: "This, - he said - isn't any ordinary package." He unwrapped the box and stared at both the silk paper and the box. "She got this the first time we went to New York , 8 or 9 years ago. She has never put it on.. was saving it for a special occasion. Well, I guess this is it. He got near the bed and placed the gift box next to the other clothing he was taking to the funeral parlor.. his wife had just died. He turned to me and said: "Never save something for a special occasion. Every day in your life is a special occasion". I considered all of this.. now I read more; pay more attention; take greater care; Sit and rest without worrying about anything; Spend more time with family, and less being driven by work; And apply my experiences to take care of me so that I can take care of and for others. I understand that life should be a source of experience to be lived.. participating.. not just surviving.. No longer keeping anything just for special occasions. Use the best of anything I have that can be useful in any day.. Wear the clothes that suit me anyplace I desire to wear them.. They are simply things to be used.. LIFE IS TO BE LIVED.. AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE.. DO WHAT YOU CAN< http://www.blackwaterusa.com/btw2005/articles/062705chaplain.html
