The Landscape of Islamic Extremism in London: Possible Players in the Attacks of July 7, 2005
Submitted by our friends at The Terrorism Research Center (TRC) http://www.terrorism.com
London has long had a vibrant, productive Islamic extremist scene, run by individuals who have links to al-Qaeda and terrorist activities around the world. Only one of the men featured on this list, Abu Qatada, is in jail. The groups referenced below espouse extremist ideologies, but they operate legally. The men in charge of the world of Islamic extremism in Britain may not have been directly planning or carrying out preparations for the attacks, but it is unlikely that something of this magnitude could happen without at least one of these "Godfathers" having prior knowledge, inciting -- even ordering -- the attack, or helping out in some other way.

Multiplayer Video Games Enhance Survivability in Real Combat
By Mr. Mathews
What if there was a convenient way to expose individuals preparing for OCONUS assignments to realistic combat tactics and "stress" before they deploy? What if there was a way to train personnel for battle without ever getting so much as a scratch? What if there was a method of training so highly effective the U.S. military continues developing and promoting such a tool? There is. Not just for kids anymore, modern computer video games provide the opportunity for operators to get daily, intense combat before going in harm's way.
Some of you out there might already be regular gamers. If so, you can skip this article and login for a quick game instead. However, if you have never played first-person shooter (FPS) style games before, you are missing out on a lot. A modern PC with an Internet connection and a $20 CD-ROM can make the difference between survival in combat and pushing up daisies.

The Ring: A Defensive Weapon for Marital Fidelity
By Joseph W. Trindal
The wedding band is more than a symbol of the lifelong commitment between two people. The wedding band can be a powerful tool in maintaining fidelity in marriage. In today's society, marriage is under frequent attack. The "anything goes" or "if it feels good, do it" attitudes reflected in the media as well as in our daily interactions are contrary to a healthy long-term relationship between two people. Frequently, married people discuss their marriages with great distain. Today, infidelity is a widely recognized social norm of the modern marriage.

Military's Energy-Beam Weapons Delayed
For years, the U.S. military has explored a new kind of firepower that is instantaneous, precise and virtually inexhaustible: beams of electromagnetic energy. "Directed-energy" pulses can be throttled up or down depending on the situation, much like the phasers on "Star Trek" could be set to kill or merely stun.

Parade Barred From N. Irish Neighborhood

U.S. Keeping Mass Transit Alert on Orange

London Bombs Held Less Than 10 Lbs. of Explosives
The bombs used in London's terrorist attacks held less than 10 pounds of explosives, police said Friday - light enough to easily tote in a bag or knapsack - yet police found no evidence suicide attackers set them off.
They declined to respond to questions about a U.S. official's claim that evidence indicating timers were used was found in the debris. London police also played down the possibility the devices were detonated by remote control using cell phones, instead asking the public for patience Friday as their investigation picks up momentum.

Legal limbo shadows civilians in war zone
The record number of civilians hired to work in war zones since September 11 is sparking heated debate over just how far the United States can go to achieve what some are calling "the civilianization of the battlefield." The Pentagon says about 20,000 civilian contractors are driving trucks, serving food and conducting other duties in Iraq. But lawyers and representatives from contract firms gathered for a conference here last week put the number closer to 80,000. "Nobody really knows the exact number," says Jeffrey Addicott, head of St. Mary's University's Center for Terrorism Law, which hosted a symposium, "Contractors on the Battlefield."... The contractors work in an uncharted legal universe, say military and legal scholars, who note many are armed and on the front lines, but are neither protected nor governed by the same military laws as troops...

Downed US Seals may have got too close to Bin Laden
THE first sign of trouble was a radio message requesting immediate extraction. A four-man team of US Navy Seal commandos had run into heavy enemy fire on a remote, thickly forested trail in the mountains of eastern Afghanistan.
Trouble turned to disaster when a US special forces helicopter carrying 16 men was shot down as it landed at the scene, killing all on board. Almost two weeks later, a mission that led to the worst US combat losses in Afghanistan since the invasion in 2001 has turned into an extraordinary manhunt. It has also opened an intriguing new front in the coalition's battle against terrorism.

Ten Afghan Soldiers Beheaded by Taliban
KANDAHAR, Afghanistan (AP) - Suspected Taliban gunmen ambushed a border patrol in the desert near the frontier with Pakistan, killing and beheading 10 Afghan soldiers, a provincial governor said Sunday. SEALs' plight, Afghan copter crash detailed
Encounter with militants led to deadliest day in Afghanistan for U.S. forces
The last radio contact was an urgent appeal for help. Night was falling, a rainstorm threatening, and four Navy SEAL commandos were surrounded by about a dozen militants in rugged, wooded mountains. They needed reinforcements.
That hurried call set in motion a chain of events that would lead to the U.S. military's deadliest blow in Afghanistan, and the greatest loss of life ever for the elite force of SEALs.

Pakistan leader: Bin Laden location unknown
Pakistan's president said Saturday there were no authentic reports on the whereabouts of Osama bin Laden, and anyone who believed the al-Qaida chief was in his country should give his location.
The comments by Gen. Pervez Musharraf came more than a week after U.S. Ambassador for Afghanistan Zalmay Khalilzad claimed that bin Laden and fugitive Taliban chief Mullah Mohammed Omar were not believed to be in Afghanistan. Khalilzad did not say where the two were believed to be hiding.

ALS Technologies: Less-Lethal Munitions
By: Frank Borelli, 11 July 2005
So, back in December of '04 I was contacted by ALS Technologies - manufacturer of less-lethal munitions - wondering if I'd be interested in evaluating and writing up some of their products. Hmmm... Let me think: Do I really want to get a bunch of things that go BANG and play with them? Would they send me launchable projectiles? They said yes. Would they send me twelve gauge projectiles? They said yes. Would they send me hand-thrown munitions? They said yes. With all that positive response, how could I say no?
So in February I took possession of a collection of munitions from ALS Tech. The samples they sent me ranged from 37mm launched / fired munitions to 12g to distraction devices (flash-bangs). Now, I should say right up front that I don't have the operational expertise to properly evaluate some of the items they sent. I've been around when flash-bangs are used, but in February I couldn't have told you what made a flash-bang good or bad. I'd never fired a 37mm Foam Rubber Baton round (but a Mark 19 40mm belt fed grenade launcher had proven fun so I thought I'd enjoy the 37mm variant of launchable projectiles). Needless to say, I had to pursue a little bit of education and then use / evaluate what had been sent. Here's what I found out...

RECREATIONAL EQUIPMENT REVIEW:
Aeris Atmos BC: Simple Yet Efficient
By: Frank Borelli, 11 July 2005
I started scuba diving in October of 1987 and, having grown up spending most summers in the ocean, found that I enjoyed it quite a bit. At that point in time, scuba equipment for recreational diving had developed quite a bit - but it's grown a long way since then. Last year I finally talked my wife into getting dive certified and that started me on a journey of re-education about dive gear. One of the things that had noticeably evolved was Buoyancy Compensators, or "BCs".
Real quick, for those who don't know, BCs are a harness that you wear to serve several purposes: 1) they usually hold your air tank centered on your back; 2) they are inflatable / deflatable so you can adjust your buoyancy in the water at every depth you dive, and 3) they give you someplace to carry your dive tools. Most modern day recreational BCs also incorporate a method for carrying weight (to offset our natural buoyancy or tendency to float) and sometimes include a second air source, or "Octopus Regulator".
