Australia warns on Sabah kidnaps

Submitted by our friends at The Terrorism Research Center (TRC) http://www.terrorism.com
Australia has issued a travel warning over possible terrorist kidnappings from Malaysian coastal resorts, islands and dive sites off the east coast of Sabah. The government said Australians in Malaysia should exercise a high degree of caution, and the risk of terrorist attack against Western interests in Malaysia remains. Tehran's Terror Master

By Patrick Devenny
FrontPageMagazine.com | May 26, 2005
Early on the morning of March 16th, 1984, William Buckley left for work at the American embassy in Beirut, Lebanon. Officially, Mr. Buckley, a decorated veteran of the Special Forces, served as the political officer at the embassy. In reality, however, Mr. Buckley was the embassy's CIA station chief. On his way to the compound, Buckley's car was stopped by a group of masked men, who forced him from his car at gunpoint. His assailants would later be identified as terrorists from the group Islamic Jihad, which served as an alias for the real perpetrators, Hezbollah. The circumstances surrounding the next 15 months of William Buckley's life remain mysterious to this day. Hints of his plight were provided in disturbing video tapes, in which he appeared worn down and brutalized. It was later revealed that additional tapes were shot showing the CIA station chief being viciously tortured and beaten by Islamic Jihad members. Finally, sometime in October of 1985, Buckley died of pneumonia, no doubt stemming from the lengthy torture sessions. His main interrogator and tormentor was a 21 year old Lebanese terrorist named Imad Mugniyah.

The Price of Complacency

The C-130 lurched slightly as it slowed above the hot sand, then began spiraling down toward the southern end of Mosul, located in northern Iraq. I would soon be meeting with an old platoon member and friend I hadn't seen in a long time. With my ears still popping, the Air Force pilot leveled out, swooping in over the Tigris and onto the narrow slit of heat emanating tarmac at the Southern fringe of the city. I'd hung up a brief teaching profession as a Navy Junior Reserve Officer Training Corp instructor for one more adventure. I would be spending the next year, if all went according to plan, providing force protection for a large construction company now running at full steam in Iraq.

As the ramp dropped on the C-130, the first thing that caught my eye was the white barriers that dominated the landscape. Ten and 12 foot concrete barriers were everywhere. I remember thinking that if I had a nickel for each barrier, I could go back to the beach and retire. http://www.blackwaterusa.com/btw2005/articles/070405article2.html

Coalition warships intercept drug smugglers,
A coalition effort involving ships from Commander Task Force 150, under the Coalition Forces Maritime Component Command, led to the seizure of more than 4,200 pounds of hashish in international waters May 20.
The guided-missile frigate Kauffman had been tracking the motor vessel Al Naveed before boarding the vessel. The boarding team discovered the drugs hidden behind a false bulkhead. Kauffman is deployed in the region to conduct maritime security operations. MSO set the conditions for security and stability in the maritime environment as well as complement the counterterrorism and security efforts of regional nations. MSO deny international terrorists use of the maritime environment as a venue for attack or to transport personnel, weapons or other material.

Defusing Iran's Bomb
By Henry Sokolski
Henry Sokolski is executive director of the Nonproliferation Policy Education Center in Washington, D.C., and is editor, with Patrick Clawson, of Getting Ready for a Nuclear-Ready Iran, forthcoming from U. S. Army War College Press.
When it comes to Iran's nuclear program, most U.S. and allied officials are in one or another state of denial. All insist it is critical to prevent Tehran from acquiring nuclear weapons. Yet, few understand just how late it is to attempt this. Iran is now no more than 12 to 48 months from acquiring a nuclear bomb, lacks for nothing technologically or materially to produce it, and seems dead set on securing an option to do so.

Government reports now available online
WASHINGTON - A new Web site aims to make available to the public certain government reports about topics from terrorism to Social Security that congressional researchers distribute now only to lawmakers. The site - www.opencrs.com - links more than a half-dozen existing collections of nearly 8,000 reports from the Congressional Research Service and centrally indexes them so visitors can find reports containing specific terms or phrases. It also encourages visitors to ask their lawmakers to send them any reports not yet publicly available - and gives detailed instructions to do this - so these can be added to the collection. None of the reports is classified or otherwise restricted...

Gut Instinct Gets Scientific on Border
U.S. agents are learning sophisticated ways to detect lies -- a crucial skill for those in charge of deciding whom to admit into the country.

There's no lying to Eugenio Garza Jr., though people often try. Sometimes he sniffs out trouble before people even utter a word. Garza, the U.S. Customs and Border Protection port director here, has spent more than a quarter-century on the boundary between the United States and Mexico, honing instincts that allow him to sort the day-trippers from the deceitful with little more than a glance. Not too long ago, he dropped in on a border inspection post to brief an officer, happened to look down at the driver of a waiting Grand Marquis and instantly ordered a search; it turned up 100 pounds of marijuana in the gas tank and side panels.
"You have about 22 seconds to figure out whether someone is fully telling the truth," said Garza, an athletic 54-year-old with spit-and-polish black boots and impeccably pressed khakis. "A good agent can just sense when something is not right." That intuition takes years to develop, but today there isn't time to do things the old-fashioned way. The threat of terrorism has added new urgency to U.S. border monitoring. The agency has fortified ports of entry with sophisticated computer systems, and it is wooing hundreds of new recruits.

Where pizzeria's dough really went
Plan to kill bin Laden fails to rise when feds follow money trail through Hayward restaurant

A bounty hunter on a rogue quest to kill Osama bin Laden received illegal money transfers wired through a Hayward pizza parlor, a federal agency revealed Friday. Local restaurateur Noor Alocozy, owner of Liberty Pizza on West A Street, illegally transferred $1 million out of the country in 2002-03, some of which reached Jonathan "Jack" Idema, the jailed American mercenary accused of running his own private interrogation camp in Afghanistan. "(Idema) was a customer. He was one of this man Alocozy's clients," said Virginia Kice, spokeswoman for the federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency which spent two years investigating Alocozy's Hayward-based money transmitting business, Noor Money Transfer which was operated out of the pizza parlor.

Chinese dragon awakens
By Bill Gertz THE WASHINGTON TIMES Published June 26, 2005
Part one of two
China is building its military forces faster than U.S. intelligence and military analysts expected, prompting fears that Beijing will attack Taiwan in the next two years, according to Pentagon officials. U.S. defense and intelligence officials say all the signs point in one troubling direction: Beijing then will be forced to go to war with the United States, which has vowed to defend Taiwan against a Chinese attack. China's military buildup includes an array of new high-technology weapons, such as warships, submarines, missiles and a maneuverable warhead designed to defeat U.S. missile defenses. Recent intelligence reports also show that China has stepped up military exercises involving amphibious assaults, viewed as another sign that it is preparing for an attack on Taiwan... Richard Fisher, vice president of the International Assessment and Strategy Center, said that in 10 years, the Chinese army has shifted from a defensive force to an advanced military soon capable of operations ranging from space warfare to global non-nuclear cruise-missile strikes. "Let's all wake up. The post-Cold War peace is over," Mr. Fisher said. "We are now in an arms race with a new superpower whose goal is to contain and overtake the United States."

Thefts of U.S. technology boost China's weaponry
By Bill Gertz THE WASHINGTON TIMES Published June 27, 2005
Second of two parts.
China is stepping up its overt and covert efforts to gather intelligence and technology in the United States, and the activities have boosted Beijing's plans to rapidly produce advanced-weapons systems. "I think you see it where something that would normally take 10 years to develop takes them two or three," said David Szady, chief of FBI counterintelligence operations. He said the Chinese are prolific collectors of secrets and military-related information. "What we're finding is that [the spying is] much more focused in certain areas than we ever thought, such as command and control and things of that sort," Mr. Szady said. military area, the rapid development of their 'blue-water' navy -- like the Aegis weapons systems -- in no small part is probably due to some of the research and development they were able to get from the United States," he said. The danger of Chinese technology acquisition is that if the United States were called on to fight a war with China over the Republic of China (Taiwan), U.S. forces could find themselves battling a U.S.-equipped enemy...

Notorious Canadian Killer Out of Prison
Canada's most notorious female inmate was secretly spirited from prison on Monday after serving 12 years for the rapes, torture and murders of three teenage girls, including her younger sister.
Correctional Service Canada said Karla Homolka was no longer in its jurisdiction, but she was nowhere to be seen by the horde of media lining the lone road from the prison in rural Ste-Anne-des-Plaines, about 20 miles northwest of Montreal.

Kofi Annan's Delusions of Grandeur
U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan's recent article in The Washington Post was a pathetic attempt to claim credit for political and economic developments in Iraq. It was an extraordinary re-writing of history that would have made officials in Orwell's Ministry of Truth blush.
His op-ed made no mention of the role the United States and Britain played in liberating the people of Iraq, or of the presence of some 160,000 U.S., British and Coalition forces who are defending democracy and freedom in the country. This striking omission insults the memory of the more than 1,700 Allied troops who gave their lives in Iraq.

U.S. official: Elite U.S. military member still missing
An Afghan provincial governor claimed Monday that a second member of a missing elite U.S. military team had been located near the Pakistan border, but a U.S. official in Washington said that was not true. The comments came a day after the announcement that one of the American servicemen who disappeared last week had been rescued.

Kestrel 2500 Handheld Weather Meter

By: Frank Borelli, 4 July 2005

So, you're planning that operation and you need up-to-date accurate weather information. Depending on what exactly you're planning and where you are, information such as altitude, temperature, wind speed and pressure trend might matter. Now, no, I don't see that kind of information being of importance to the police officer in his cruiser on a summer night. But for the soldiers preparing to jump out of a plane, that just might matter. For a leader who is planning an operation, environmental considerations should be taken into consideration.

I'm pretty spoiled. I've always depended on the television and internet for weather updates and forecasts. In the field, you can't do that. Even radios are sometimes spotty at best. What's the answer? A relatively inexpensive, handheld unit that measures all of those environmental items (and more) and displays them in an easy to understand manner. Kestrel Pocket Weather Meters perform varying tasks depending on how much information you need and how much you're willing to invest to get it.

Bayliner 215 Classic Bow Rider

By: Frank Borelli, 4 July 2005

Just last year my father-in-law called me and said, "Hey; I'm selling my boat. Interested?" Well, of course I was. I spent most of my young summers in Ocean City, MD and spent more hours than I can count playing / swimming in the ocean or bay. For the past almost twenty years I've enjoyed scuba diving which is quite often done from boats in various bodies of water. (Yeah, you can do it from shorelines, but it just isn't as much fun to me). So, when I was offered this Bayliner Capri 2150, I jumped at the chance.

Of course, that Capri 2150 is an older boat - the precursor to Bayliner's current model 215 Classic - a bowrider they refer to as a runabout. The 215 is a medium-sized good family boat rated for nine people who would be comfortable on the available seating for six (in the cockpit area) and the bow seating (easily room for those other three).
