The Hidden Enemy: Sympathizers & Recon Personnel

By: Frank Borelli
We've all read stories about the middle-eastern appearing men with cameras taking pictures of bridges; the Coast Guard has asked boaters to keep a look out for people doing such things from boats; if we saw someone with an olive complexion and a camera walking around near fuel storage tanks most of us would take note. What about the things we just don't expect and therefore dismiss if we even notice it at all? Let me give you two examples:
Example One: (names left out to protect sources and locations): a friend of mine and I were having lunch one day and we were discussing whether or not we had any local prime terrorist targets. The conversation evolved into a discussion of what behavior is "suspicious". That conversation evolved in to him telling me about a guy that his wife had recently started working with. His wife works at a large retail store that carries a wide variety of products to include clothing, cleaning supplies, food items, electronics, household items, etc. Think WalMart, Target, K-Mart, Sam's Club, BJ's Wholesale, etc. What made my friend's wife suspicious was that her new workmate - we'll call him Bob just so he has a name - what made my friend's wife suspicious of Bob were the circumstances of his hiring and the questions he'd been asking since he started.

THE FARC AND THE TALIBAN'S CONNECTION TO DRUGS,

The growing association between the Armed Revolutionary Forces of Colombia (FARC) and the Taliban movement (1994-2001) with drug trafficking does not purport to provide additional arguments to those inclined to demonize these two movements. Instead, it explores the drug links maintained by a Marxist guerrilla and a fundamentalist Islamic group (these groups were chosen because they are greatly dissimilar) and the resulting consequences of these connections. These consequences are complex and raise many questions. For instance, armed groups protect peasants who engage in illicit cultivation for survival reasons in exchange for their support and for the resources needed to carry on the political struggle. In this case, one wonders whether this link between armed groups and the illegal industry necessarily lead them to become involved in the more lucrative drug trafficking business and the increased risks that this implies.

BREAKING NEWS FOR THE PROFESSIONAL
MasterCard files at risk
MasterCard International has reported that more than 40 million credit card accounts might have been exposed to fraud through a computer security breach at a payment processing company, perhaps the single largest case of stolen consumer data to date.
MasterCard said its analysts and law enforcement officials had identified a pattern of fraudulent charges traced to an intrusion at CardSystems Solutions of Tucson, Arizona, which processes more than $15 billion in payments for small and medium-size merchants and financial institutions each year. About 20 million Visa and 13.9 million MasterCard accounts were compromised; the other accounts belonged to American Express or Discover card customers.

FBI Didn't Seek to Hire Terror Experts
In sworn testimony that contrasts with their promises to the public, the FBI managers who crafted the post-Sept. 11 fight against terrorism say expertise about the Mideast or terrorism was not important in choosing the agents they promoted to top jobs.
And they still do not believe such experience is necessary today even as terrorist acts occur across the globe.

Kidnapping Surge Adds to Terror in Haiti
PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (AP) - Jean Henold Buteau's wife listened frantically to the brusque voice on the other end of the telephone line: We've got your husband. Give us $1 million or start planning his funeral. Then she heard his screams as the kidnappers tortured her bound and hooded husband,...

Israel apologizes to U.S. over China arms sale
Israel publicly apologized to the United States on Sunday over arms exports to China that have drawn criticism from Washington and strained U.S.-Israeli security ties.
"It is impossible to hide the crisis between Israel and the United States with regard to the security industries. We are doing everything possible to put it behind us," Israeli Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom said on Israel Radio.
The dispute centers on Israel's sale of Harpy attack drones and other advanced technology to China that the Pentagon fears could tilt the balance of power and make it difficult to defend Taiwan, which Beijing deems a renegade province.

Bush: Pulling Out of Iraq Not an Option
President Bush said Saturday that pulling out of Iraq now is not an option, rejecting calls by some lawmakers and many people asked in polls to start bringing U.S. troops home.
"The terrorists and insurgents are trying to get us to retreat. Their goal is to get us to leave before Iraqis have had a chance to show the region what a government that is elected and truly accountable to its citizens can do for its people," Bush said in his weekly radio address.

10 Questions for Porter Goss
He had been director of the Central Intelligence Agency for just seven months when the onetime CIA spy had to cede much of his power to the new director of national intelligence, John Negroponte. But Porter Goss, 66, says he now has more time to run America's largest human intelligence agency. He sat down for his first interview with TIME's Timothy J. Burger.

Schools and military face off

Privacy rights clash with required release of student information

When Capt. Larry Dibble wanders into Greece Olympia High School, just outside Rochester, he is greeted with smiles and handshakes. Teachers invite him into their classrooms to talk to students about joining the Marine Corps. The school provides an almost-complete list of student names and telephone numbers.
In another suburb, at Fairport High School, Dibble is barred from setting up a recruiting table. Appointments are required to talk to students, and interviews are allowed only in the guidance office. The school will release student contact details only with written parental approval.

Uniform Evolution: Green to Camo to Digital to Multi-Cam

By: Frank Borelli, 20 June 2005

Last Veteran's Day, I happened to be in DC and saw veterans from all "recent" wars. As is almost expected in such a venue, their were bits and pieces of uniforms from the past fifty years being worn. From OD Green to digital desert camouflage, you could find pants here, a blouse there - and even a few woodland camo field jackets.

Typically, the commercial market is a few steps behind the Department of Defense when it comes to the development of new technologies - of any kind - but ahead of the DoD when it comes to marketing non-classified items such as uniforms. If a soldier is wearing it in a current conflict, you can bet some model has it on walking Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills. This week we're going to take a brief look at the evolution of uniforms over the past fifty years, and into the next generation.
