QUOTES FOR THE WEEK |
Freedom is a system based on courage.
Charles Peguy
"...It was a hot day and the windows were open, so he commanded to the driver, 'Stop the car or I will shoot.' He [the police officer] said, 'I distinctly heard the guy in the passenger seat say, "Go ahead man. He won't shoot.' So the car started to pull forward and 'Blam! Blam!' I put two holes in the driver. Then I distinctly heard "Einstein" in the passenger seat say, 'Whoa! Sorry man.'"
The moral of the story is this: Be very careful who you get your advice from."
- from On Combat by LTC(R) Dave Grossman
Never tell people how to do things. Tell them what to do and they will surprise you with their ingenuity.

'One darned thing after another': That's how former Secretary of State Dean Acheson once defined foreign policy. The latest "darned thing" for the United States is Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez.
For no apparent reason, the leftist strongman is arming Venezuela to the teeth. He's also supporting local narcoterrorists and other Latin revolutionaries.

Why Are We Killing Ourselves:
A look at accidental shootings of police officers by police officers
Written by Stuart A. Meyers
Copyright © 2002 Operational Tactics, Inc. Accidental shootings occur in law enforcement training and real-life situations at an alarming frequency. There is a direct correlation between training standards, safety protocol and operational performance. Recent deaths of police officers at the hands fellow police officers prompted the author to investigate the prevalence of this situation. The results of this investigation are not only disturbing, but shocking and elicit the following questions:
Why are we killing ourselves?
How do we ensure safe and effective training?

Al Qaeda and the Internet: The Danger of "Cyberplanning"
Description: We can say with some certainty, al Qaeda loves the Internet. When the latter first appeared, it was hailed as an integrator of cultures and a medium for businesses, consumers, and governments to communicate with one another. It appeared to offer unparalleled opportunities for the creation of a "global village." Today the Internet still offers that promise, but it also has proven in some respects to be a digital menace. Its use by al Qaeda is only one example. It also has provided a virtual battlefield for peacetime hostilities between Taiwan and China, Israel and Palestine, Pakistan and India, and China and the United States (during both the war over Kosovo and in the aftermath of the collision between the Navy EP-3 aircraft and Chinese MiG). In times of actual conflict, the Internet was used as a virtual battleground between NATO's coalition forces and elements of the Serbian population. These real tensions from a virtual interface involved not only nation-states but also non-state individuals and groups either aligned with one side or the other, or acting independently.

Congressional hearings scrutinize Patriot Act
Has it helped combat terrorists? Attorney general to make the case
Is the USA Patriot Act helping defeat terrorists? Attorney General Alberto Gonzales and FBI director Robert Mueller will supply answers to that question this week as they testify before the Senate and House Judiciary Committees.
Key parts of the Patriot Act expire at the end of this year and Congress must decide whether to extend them, as well as whether to alter other parts of the statute.

Citizens Take Border Patrol in Own Hands The Minuteman Project, a group that organizes volunteer civilian patrols on the Arizona/Mexico border to report illegal immigrant crossings to the Border Patrol, couldn't possibly have taken the Bush administration by surprise.
For more than a decade, at least several hundred thousand - possibly several million - illegal aliens have crossed the U.S. border with Mexico every year. This was inconceivable as late as the 1980s, well before the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, but even the worst attacks on U.S. soil were not enough to compel the Bush administration to build a functional border there.

Rudolph agrees to plead guilty
Accused 1996 Olympics bomber Eric Rudolph has agreed to plead guilty to all charges against him in connection with that bombing and three others -- including a deadly 1998 bombing in Alabama.
The reported plea deal would give Rudolph a life sentence, sources close to the case said Friday. An announcement was expected to be made at the Justice Department in Washington later in the day, sources said.
Authorities in North Carolina said they uncovered explosives as the result of information provided by Rudolph in negotiations with prosecutors.

Gun debate tilts toward easier access
Several states consider loosening concealed weapons laws
With more than four out of five states allowing law-abiding citizens to carry concealed weapons, that argument is finished. Now, the nation's long-running argument over guns turns on how much to loosen the rules - should guns be allowed in judge's chambers? Bars? In workplace parking lots? The work in state legislatures following the latest spate of fatal shootings shows how much the debate has changed. The 1999 Columbine school shootings sent moms marching into the streets for tougher gun laws, but this year, many state legislators are looking at ways to broaden access to weapons and ease training and other requirements.

Security Council to open Hariri probe
The U.N. Security Council has unanimously authorized an international investigation into the assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri.
The council voted on Thursday after a U.N. fact-finding mission found that Lebanon's probe had "serious flaws" and had "neither the capacity nor the commitment to reach a satisfactory and credible conclusion."

Bomber confesses
A WHITE supremacist who hid in the US wilderness for five years to avoid capture will plead guilty to a series of bombings including the Atlanta Olympics blast.
Eric Rudolph's unexpected guilty plea -- announced yesterday by US Attorney General Alberto Gonzalez -- was part of a plea bargain that will see him avoid the death penalty. Rudolph, 38, will face 100 years in prison.
Some of his victims are upset at the plea bargain, but FBI agents say life behind bars would be a fate worse than death for an outdoors "survivalist" such as Rudolph.

Most Area Terrorism Funding Not Spent
The Washington area has not spent the majority of $145 million in anti-terrorism grants awarded by the federal government over the past three years, including funds earmarked for such critical items as hospital beds and protective gear for rescue workers.
Long after the 2001 attacks on New York and Washington, homeland security spending across the country remains bogged down by administrative problems, back orders for equipment and long timelines to implement new technology, such as communications systems.

FRANKS REVIEW |
Extrema Ratio Fulcrum S
By: Frank Borelli, 11 April 2005
I don't usually have to do as much homework for a review as I did for this one - but that is definitely not a complaint. I recently received an Extrema Ratio Fulcrum S Testudo knife for test and evaluation. Markings on the blade show "58 HRC Stainless Cobalt Steel". Although I am familiar with the Rockwell Hardness scale, I had never heard of "stainless cobalt steel" and my curiosity was enflamed. Thank goodness for the Internet research tools that are available.
What I learned showed me that these are impressive knives. While it is not uncommon for a blade to have a hardness rating between 54 and 60, recognize that 58 is at then high end of that spread. Not that I want this to become a class in metallurgy (because I certainly wouldn't be qualified to teach it), suffice to say that the type of steel used to make Extrema Ratio knives makes them quite unique and very strong. The metal contents of that "stainless cobalt steel" was specifically calculated to provide a steel that would hold an edge well without being so brittle that it might fracture easily - or easier than competitor knives. What makes the steel unique is the higher levels of chrome and cobalt than normally found in most other steel alloys.

TO AND FOR PEACE KEEPERS OF THE MILITARY AND ALL LAW ENFORCEMENT
AT ALL LEVELS AND ALL OF THOSE IN THEIR SUPPORT SYSTEMS AND ALL
WHO CARE ABOUT THEM AND THEIR WELFARE.
LIFE...
On the cab of a truck observed on Interstate 81... Guns... No Roses... that
statement is simple enough for anyone to understand...
Overheard on CB Radio... One driver fussing because someone had a beautiful
cow and he did not have one... knowing about trucker lingo I will leave the meaning
of "cow" to your imagination... we are not talking about the kind that eats grass in
a pasture...
I have just returned from a very, very quick trip home to the Great Valley of Virginia
to officiate the Memorial Service for my brother-in-law who was the same age as I.
In our younger life we spent much time together hunting, fishing and exploring. I
was there when he met the Lord Jesus Christ. One of his last requests of me was
that I do his memorial service and my daughter sing special songs. This was my
fifth memorial service for his family... plus three for my own family. It seems the
only time that I am allowed to visit that place on this Earth where my heart still most
desires to be is for such events... at least it is always for a special event... and after
it is over I cannot linger there but must bring myself back here for other crisis.
In the congregation for the service were two military men in uniform... one with 34
years of service and serving in Afghanistan until just a few days before the service.
He arrived home on Tuesday, the day my dear brother-in-law breathed his last...
it seems that he was informed that he must take a rest leave and he could choose
where or they would choose for him. He chose to come home... the amazing thing
was that he arrived just in time to be moral and emotional support for my sister-in-
law when he could not have had any prior knowledge of the death in the family. He
was a Godsend for her...
