**FROM THE EDITOR:** |
Good Morning,
GENERAL MATTIS IS PROOF LIBERALS DON'T WATCH MOVIES OR READ BOOKS
Tibor Machan
You've heard, I'm sure, of the righteous outcry over Lt. Gen. James N. Mattis's comment that "It's fun to shoot some people," made about the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the loud complaints from various leaders of special ethnic interest groups belly-aching about it.
Well, actually, it is "fun" to shoot some people - and all of us who have ever waited through an hour and a half movie, or read some 300 pages of a thriller, to the point when the bad guys finally get their comeuppance know this perfectly well. Some people, the ones who ruthlessly sacrifice the lives of completely innocent children and civilians so as to express their anger about something -terrorists and other brutalizers - need to get creamed, and it fun, meaning, satisfying, to do the shooting of such folks.

Red-Light Cameras
Do they help or are they a problem?
By Vincent G. Oliveira
The Virginia General Assembly has decided to end the ten-year "photo-red" program that started in 1995. The main objective was to reduce the number of vehicular accidents by discouraging and reducing the amount of red lights being ran. The final say came from The Militia, Police and Public Safety Committee, who have opposed other similar bills in the past.
I am a U.S. Marine stationed in Chesapeake Virginia. I have been in the U.S. Marines for six years and I am currently a Cadre Instructor Trainer for the Marine Corps Security Forces Training Company. I instruct Marines and Sailors in training management, physical security/law enforcement, unarmed self-defense, anti-terrorism, and small arms training. I have an Associates of Arts, a Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice, and I am currently working on my Masters of Science in Criminal Justice.
Before going in front of the committee "police Sgt. Mark Summerell said a telephone survey of 300 Virginia Beach residents in October and November showed that 86 percent knew the red-light cameras were in place and 84 percent approved of them." Out of the 300 people who were surveyed 62 percent thought that red-light running is a serious problem and 88 percent thought that red-light cameras would help the situation. The local survey is a little higher than the survey conducted in 2001 by Roper Starch Worldwide. Sixty-five percent of 1,017 men and women agreed with the use of red-light cameras. "Studies by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety have suggested that red light cameras are effective in reducing red light running by as much as 40 percent and significantly reduce crashes resulting in injuries associated with red light running."

Working Together As A Team
Doran 2005
We seem to have gotten away from the concept of demanding that we all work together as a team and what it is to be loyal to our organization. I see this more and more. I also see more persons going out of their way to catch persons they work with making a mistake, then using it in an attempt to gain status within their group.
In youth we are typically our own worst enemies and critics, a lot of our problems are caused by our own inability to look at the big picture and move forward without any thought or consideration at what may lie ahead. We listen to the wrong person and move forward with out taking on additional council and considering if we have been given the best advise. This in turn creates more conflict and problems than necessary.
As we get older we learn that life is difficult not only for us but for others as well. If our priorities are in order we use our knowledge and past mistakes to teach those around us through our own experience.

21 Feet Is Way Too Close!!
By: Frank Borelli
It is common knowledge that a suspect, armed with an edged weapon and within twenty-one feet of a police officer presents a deadly threat. Why? Because the "average" man can run that twenty-one feet in about one-point-five seconds; the same one-point-five seconds it will take that police officer to recognize danger, draw and point his weapon, and then pull the trigger. Even if the officer manages to get the shot off, and even if it hits the suspect; even if it instantly disables the suspect, the blade is going to be so close to the officer that the suspect's momentum may continue forward with enough force for the edged weapon to end up injuring the officer anyway.

Suspect fits serial killer profile
Respectable lifestyle could have deflected attention away from alleged BTK killer, according to experts
As a married father of two, devout official in his Lutheran congregation, one-time Cub Scout leader, and by-the-book code enforcement officer in his hometown of Park City, Kan., Dennis L. Rader appears from the outside to be the least likely candidate for serial killer.
"I never would have guessed in a million years," said Carole Nelson, a member of the Christ Lutheran Church, where Rader served as an usher and head of the church council.

Tight Security at Judge's Spouse's Funeral

More complete portrait of BTK suspect emerges
New comments diverge from early depiction as well-liked neighbor
The signs that he was tightly wound were there for many to see. He signaled his powerful need for control again and again, but even the people who say he bullied them had no inkling that he could be the man police are now calling a serial killer.
Dennis L. Rader, the government inspector charged with killing 10 people between 1974 and 1991, may have been a Boy Scout volunteer and active church leader. But he was also known as an arrogant and harassing neighbor who bullied single women on his street, and an unforgiving supervisor who made life miserable for at least one subordinate -- another single woman.

France calls for global watchdog on bio-warfare risk
France called on Tuesday for an international monitoring centre to stop dangerous toxins from falling into terrorist hands, as the head of Interpol warned the world was not ready to cope with the horror of a biological attack.
French Interior Minister Dominique de Villepin said biotechnology companies, research laboratories, hospitals and universities needed to become more sensitive to the risks associated with hiring staff, working on hazardous pathogens and granting access to sensitive areas.

SPECIAL OPERATIONS: French Commando Ship Moves East
March 1, 2005: Without much publicity, France has moved the replenishment ship Var to the eastern Mediterranean. The Var contains facilities for running commando operations, as well as facilities for about 200 commandoes and their equipment. France apparently believes that the situation in Lebanon is going to get out of control. Since World War II, France has been something of a big brother for Lebanon, especially the Lebanese Christians. This particular relationship goes back some 800 years, to the time of the Crusades. Currently, the Lebanese are out in the streets protesting the continued presence of Syrian troops in the country. If France is going to get involved, it won't be with a lot of troops. But you can do a lot with a hundred or so commandoes. The Var has previously supported French commandoes operating in Afghanistan.
US General Says Iraqi Forces Must Protect Themselves
The general who commands all U.S. military operations in the Middle East says the new Iraqi army is responsible for protecting its own facilities, such as police stations and recruiting centers that have frequently been hit by insurgent bombs. An attack on Monday killed 125 people, most of them Iraqi police recruits, the largest single death toll since the fall of Saddam Hussein. U.S. General John Abizaid says his forces are trying to help with advice and training, but the primary responsibility to protect Iraq's fledgling security forces falls on those forces themselves.

FRANKS REVIEW |
Cobalt A/V1 Throat Microphone
Courtesy of Steve Forgues
Over the years I have used many types of microphone setups. Most are familiar with the standard lapel microphone/speaker that is generally used for normal everyday duty use. There are many forms of microphone/earpiece setups for undercover/plainclothes and tactical operations. When it comes to those that work in tactical operations, most are familiar with the L.A.S.H. (Los Angeles SWAT Headset). LAPD pretty much made these famous within the tactical operations world. From my understanding it is a very good system, but with a hefty price. I know, I know, high quality comes high price. Well not all teams have the budget to outfit every tactical officer with a $400+ headset; I have found a throat microphone setup that will not break the budget.
A few months ago, I was flipping through the pages of one of the many LEO related magazines and saw an advertisement for Cobalt A/V. It showed a throat mic for about $100. I first was thinking, just how good could it be for that price. Well I went to their web site and did some poking around to get more information. After a few months I finally broke down and bought one.
