WASHINGTON URGED TO SAVE MONEY BY RAISING PRIVATE MILITARY 'CONTRACTOR BRIGADE'
By Nathan Hodge
The head of a prominent US private military company has proposed an unusual remedy for an overtaxed US military: raising a private force for service in places such as Iraq, Nathan Hodge reports from Washington.
Speaking last week at a symposium in Washington, Erik Prince, the CEO and founder of Blackwater USA, proposed raising a "contractor brigade" to supplement regular US military forces. "There's consternation in the DoD [Defence Department] about increasing the permanent size of the army," said Mr Prince. "We want to add 30,000 people, and they talked about costs of anywhere from $3.6bn to $4bn [EU3.1bn, £2.2bn] to do that. Well, by my math, that comes out to about $135,000 per soldier," he added. "We could do it certainly cheaper."

I AM ALWAYS LOOKING FOR PROFESSIONAL ARTICLES. PLEASE DO NOT

Ben Stein's Last Column... (read all of this or you will have missed the best).
How Can Someone Who Lives in Insane Luxury Be a Star in Today's World?
As I begin to write this, I "slug" it, as we writers say, which means I put a heading on top of the document to identify it. This heading is "eonlineFINAL," and it gives me a shiver to write it. I have been doing this column for so long that I cannot even recall when I started. I loved writing this column so much for so long I came to believe it would never end.

Defensive Carry
Doran 2005
I am asked almost daily by officers and military personnel what they should carry and how they should carry it. First of all you have to ask yourself if you will carry your defensive hand gun all of the time? The gun you carry is always better than the one you leave under the seat of your vehicle, on the dresser or some other unreachable location.
If you will not carry it religiously do not buy it. I have had several individuals come up to me and tell me how much better there 44 mag is than my Kimber 45 ACP. Then I ask them if I can see it? They proceed to tell me it is in the car or at home. My response is always then I guess mine is better than yours because I have mine with me and you do not.

Roadside Bomb Common Sense
Shawn Hughes
If my email box is any benchmark, the concern for being ambushed by a roadside bomb is at an all-time high. Which is interesting, because the use of an Improvised Explosive Device to mobility kill or murder the occupants of a passing vehicle is an old and common tactic.
In response, there's an equally large amount of articles, white papers, 'lessons learned' and what-have-you recently appearing on the subject. While there is some good information to be learned from a few of these, many provide advice that is impossible to use in the real world. And, quite a few incorrectly base their opinions on current tactics.

The Over-Reliance on Technology
As a society, we live in a technologically advanced era. Nearly everything is faster than it was two decades ago. Everywhere one turns there is a faster alternative to what was 'new to the market' just last year. Even those of us in law enforcement are inundated with technological advancements. On board computer systems, 800 radio systems, global positioning systems, and so many other advancements in crime detection and prevention have made law enforcement a profession, not just a job. The downside to this paradigm is the over-reliance on technology and a trend of abandonment of good old-fashioned policing. http://www.blackwaterusa.com/btw2004/articles/021405thomas.html
A Look at U.S. Military Deaths in Iraq
As of Saturday, Feb. 12, 2005, at least 1,457 members of the U.S. military have died since the beginning of the Iraq war in March 2003, according to an Associated Press count. At least 1,111 died as a result of hostile action, the Defense Department said. The figures include four military civilians.
The AP count is seven higher than the Defense Department's tally, last updated at 10 a.m. EST Friday.

China's Big Export
When it comes to spying, Beijing likes to flood the zone
Ning Wen and his wife were arrested last fall at their home office in Manitowoc, Wis., for allegedly sending their native China $500,000 worth of computer parts that could enhance missile systems. As these naturalized citizens await trial, similar episodes in Mount Pleasant, N.J., and Palo Alto, Calif., point only to the tip of the iceberg, according to FBI officials keeping tabs on more than 3,000 companies in the U.S. suspected of collecting information for China. A hotbed of activity is Silicon Valley, where the number of Chinese espionage cases handled by the bureau increases 20% to 30% annually. Says a senior FBI official: "China is trying to develop a military that can compete with the U.S., and they are willing to steal to get [it]."

Colombia President Meets With Commanders
President Alvaro Uribe held an emergency meeting with his military commanders Saturday after leftist rebels launched a series of attacks, while U.S. Embassy officials remembered three Americans who were captured by the guerrillas two years ago.
U.S. Ambassador William Wood, in a somber ceremony marking the second anniversary of the capture of the three U.S. military contractors, said he was disappointed that rewards offered by the U.S. government for the Americans have produced insufficient results.

Fewer gays being discharged since 9/11
'Don't ask, don't tell' ousters at lowest level yet
The number of gay and lesbian service members discharged under the military's "don't ask, don't tell" policy has dropped by almost half since the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks and is at its lowest level since the Defense Department began keeping such figures in 1997.
Significant declines have occurred in every branch of the armed forces, according to statistics released yesterday by the Pentagon. The Marine Corps, Air Force and Navy discharged fewer gay men and lesbians in 2004 than in any year since the Pentagon began tallying the number of its "homosexual separations" eight years ago. The Army's discharges represented the lowest number of discharges in five years.

LaserMax LMS 1202 Remington Shotgun Laser/Light
By: Frank Borelli, 14 February 2005
Iron sights. Red dot "scopes". Holoscopes. Telescopes. Lights. Infra-red scopes. Thermal imaging system. Lasers. How many different attachments can you put on the end of a weapon? Sure, every mission might demand a different capability, but any time you can combine functionality into a single unit you've increased your versatility while minimizing the additional load. LaserMax - well known for their internal laser aiming device in pistols - has introduced a light and laser module for Remington shotguns.
Combining a light with a laser isn't a particularly new idea. Other manufacturers have done it with pistol-mounted lights. Given LaserMax's unique installation with pistol lasers - the fact that the unit is entirely internal - it's (currently) impossible to include a usable light with the laser. However, when LaserMax set out to create a laser aiming device for a shotgun, including a light unit was pretty easy.
