An Opinion on the Elections in Iraq: International Coalition Support
Is Enabling the Vote and the Will of the People

b Victory Base South, Bldg 34
    Coalition Headquarters Liaison Operations Center
by Dr. Derrin R. Smith, GSIS Professor,
Graduate School of International Studies, University of Denver
The Ukrainian security forces were taking no unnecessary risks as they rolled into the slum adjacent to Camp Delta at Blair Field, in Multi-national Division Central South. The heavy machine gunners were atop the armored personnel carriers, and serious troops with assault rifles maintained vigilant watch up and down the streets and alleys of this Al Kut district in Wasit Province. This province, with a long exposed stretch on the Iran-Iraq border, was once famous for its chemical weapons arsenals. This day, however, the mission was quite different. The focus was on minds and intellect, not mines and explosive ordnance. The elections are coming, and citizens were eagerly preparing for the event. QUOTE FOR THE WEEK

There is a point, of course, where a man must take the isolated peak and break with all his associates for clear principle; but until that time comes he must work, if he would be of use, with men as they are. As long as the good in them overbalances the evil, let him work with them for the best that can obtained.

    -- Theodore Roosevelt

    NarcoTerror

    By Greg Ferency
Since September 11, 2001 the citizens of the United States have been introduced to a type of warfare that they are not very familiar with and not altogether comfortable being involved in. We are now facing groups of individuals who operate in a manner that is concealed, motivated and "group-serving". They show themselves at will and either die in the carnage or slip back into our society. They have the capabilities to kill a small or large number of us and show little regard for human life in general. I am obviously talking about the terrorist and their actions.

Unconscious Competence: What is it? How can we train for it?

    Martin D. Topper, Ph.D., Jack M. Feldman, Ph.D.

    What Is Unconscious Competence?

The term "Unconscious Competence," is used by members of the American Tactical Shooting Association and others in the training community to describe a rapid, seamless and successful response to a situation involving deadly force or the potential for deadly force. It is a term many believe they inherently understand, but which is, in reality, very hard to define.

For example, what does the word "unconscious" imply? Obviously, it doesn't mean unconsciousness as in a boxer who's been KO'ed. Most people who use the term unconscious competence are really describing an effective action performed outside of focal awareness. People who have achieved unconscious competence in some area (e.g. music, baseball, self-defense) can carry out an action or sequence of actions at a high level of performance without being focally aware of the precise details of their own behavior. They are aware of their goal (playing a blues tune, hitting a curve ball, engaging a threat) and whether or not they are achieving their goal. But they are not aware of the details of the separate components of their actions.

    Combat Arms Training Trifecta
Tactics, Mindset, and Skill at Arms

There has been a lot of debate over which of these concepts is the most important. I do not purport to have the definitive answer to the question, just some observations I have made over the years.

I am not writing on this subject to deride anyone's work or opinion, but I do understand that some will take offence to what I have to say.

Any training organization must sell itself to potential students based on what it is best able to offer. Some concepts of Combat Arms Training are more difficult to sell than others. It is with this statement in mind that I write this article.

Allegations IRA behind bank heist impeding talks
Carefully orchestrated Belfast robbery authorized by Sinn Fein, U.K. minister says

When thieves pierced the security of the Northern Bank in Belfast shortly before Christmas, they didn't merely pull off the biggest cash raid in British history. They also appear to have spiked any immediate prospect of reviving Northern Ireland's moribund peace process.
Netting a remarkable $61-million, none of which has been recovered, the Dec. 20 robbery was almost certainly authorized by Sinn Fein, the political arm of the Irish Republican Army, Ian Pearson, Britain's parliamentary secretary of state for Northern Ireland, said in a candid interview yesterday.

36 U.S. Troops Die in Iraq in Their Bloodiest Day
Thirty-one U.S. troops were reported killed in a helicopter crash and five more died in insurgent attacks Wednesday in the deadliest day for American forces since they invaded Iraq 22 months ago.
The heavy U.S. toll came amid a series of guerrilla bombings and raids that killed 10 Iraqis in a campaign to sabotage Sunday's landmark election -- a cornerstone of U.S. plans in Iraq. http://reuters.myway.com/article/20050126/2005-01-26T141753Z_01_MAR628024_RTRIDST_0_NEWS-IRAQ-DC.html

Radio technology eyed for U.S. borders
System seen easing congestion without compromising security

U.S. officials want to see if the same technology that speeds cars through highway tolls and identifies lost pets can unclog border crossings without compromising security.
Homeland Security Undersecretary Asa Hutchinson announced Tuesday that the government will begin testing radio frequency identification technology at this crossing and four others by midsummer. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/6867107/

Pentagon prepares to rethink warfare focus
New emphasis on insurgencies and terrorism is planned

The Pentagon has drafted terms for an ambitious reshaping of U.S. forces that would put less emphasis on waging conventional warfare and more on dealing with insurgencies, terrorist networks, failed states and other nontraditional threats, according to senior defense officials and others familiar with the confidential planning.
This proposed shift in strategic focus stems partly from a recognition that U.S. forces were inadequately prepared for the insurgency in Iraq and the wider hunt for terrorists around the world. But officials said it also grows out of a heightened perception of other potential threats. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/6868605/

Kidnappers of Urbina's mom still free
Kidnappers holding the mother of Detroit Tigers pitcher Ugueth Urbina have demanded a $3 million ransom, but have not contacted the family in several weeks, Venezuelan police said Tuesday.
Ten police detectives in an anti-kidnapping unit are on the case and believe 54-year-old Maura Villarreal is still being held hostage. Police said the strategy of making no contact is a common ploy used by kidnappers in the South American country.

Dirty rat, not bomb - Mexican man admits terror tip was hoax
A Mexican man who reported Boston was targeted for a terrorist nuclear attack confessed he fabricated the story to take revenge on a man who stiffed him in a deal to smuggle illegal aliens, a source said.
``He's admitted it's all a hoax,'' said a law enforcement source familiar with the investigation of Jose Ernesto Beltran Quinones, who was taken into custody Monday along with his son in Mexicali by Mexican police and interviewed by the FBI. ``He admitted he was trying to get back at his employer, who is a human smuggler,'' said the source.

    SHOT Show 2005 Highlights Review

By: Frank Borelli, 31 January 2005

True to form, SHOT Show was overwhelming. With more than seventeen miles of floor space to walk (if you wanted to see everything), it was quite an experience. I had never been to SHOT before, and I think that made it all the more impressive for me because I had no past experiences with it to compare.

This week, as promised for the past two weeks, we're going to review the highlights of the show. There are simply too many new and upgraded products to cover in a single page, so you'll see that this Highlights Review is broken down into numerous sections. Visit each in accordance with your interests, but don't neglect any specific ones because there are surprises in each. Pictures of the new products are included as they were available from the manufacturers. Now for the good stuff.
