QUOTE FOR THE WEEK |
If we take the generally accepted definition of bravery as a quality which knows no fear, I have never seen a brave man. All men are frightened. The more intelligent they are, the more they are frightened.

The Stiff Upper Lip: Living With Combat, and Making Peace With the Memory
(Extracted from "On Combat" by Lt. Col. Dave Grossman, with Loren Christensen.
There are two rules that warriors have lived by across the centuries. Rules that were learned the hard way and passed on from generation to generation. The first rule is that it is okay to weep at a funeral. Every warrior society has understood the need to mourn the loss of a comrade.
The second rule that warrior societies have always understood is that it is not okay to weep at the memory of battle. A warrior who does is like a firefighter who weeps at the memory of fire or a pilot who weeps at the memory of flight. The firefighter and the pilot can mourn comrades killed in fires and crashes but still find satisfaction in what they do. Combat is what warriors do, and if the memory of battle is unbearably painful to them, then they will have great difficulty doing it again. Like a widow dealing with the loss of her husband of 50 year, the veteran must come to terms with what has happened, and he must de-link the memory from the emotions.

Why Islam is Not Considered Hate?
By Pete Fisher
www.MichNews.com
Jan 11, 2005
With all the laws in place in this nation concerning Hate Crimes, it amazes me that
we allow Islam to not only be practiced in this nation, but we allow it in our school
systems.
We have recently seen 4 Christian protestors arrested for carrying scriptural signs
against homosexuals. We see anything that resembles inflammatory speech shut
down and legally dealt with whether it comes from Nazis, KKK members, Aryans,
White Supremacists, etc.
A hate crime can be committed either by speech or action in this nation. Yet we
allow the influx of a religion that espouses hatred and slaughter wholesale
worldwide and the authority they claim to behave as such comes straight from
their Quran.

BREAKING NEWS FOR THE PROFESSIONAL |
New FBI Software May Be Unusable
A new FBI computer program designed to help agents share information to ward off terrorist attacks may have to be scrapped, the agency has concluded, forcing a further delay in a four-year, half-billion-dollar overhaul of its antiquated computer system. The bureau is so convinced that the software, known as Virtual Case File, will not work as planned that it has taken steps to begin soliciting proposals from outside contractors for new software, officials said. The overhaul of the decrepit computer system was identified as a priority both by the independent commission that investigated the Sept. 11 attacks and by members of Congress, who found that the FBI's old system prevented agents from sharing information that could have headed off the attacks

Security cameras, fences would be added to I-95 bridge
New Hampshire is expected to install cameras and build fences as part of security improvements on the Interstate 95 bridge connecting New Hampshire and Maine.
A $100,000 federal grant for the work also would pay for alarms on the bridge, which crosses the Piscataqua River at the port of Portsmouth.

FBI computer overhaul hits another snag
New software system called outdated, inadequate
A $170 million computer overhaul intended to give FBI agents and analysts an instantaneous and paperless way to manage criminal and terrorism cases is headed back to the drawing board, probably at a much steeper cost to taxpayers.
The FBI is hoping to salvage some parts of the project, known as Virtual Case File. But officials acknowledged Thursday that it is possible the entire system, designed by Science Applications International Corp. of San Diego, is so inadequate and outdated that one will have to be built from scratch.

Crime: MacDonald Wants Out
Reversing his longtime legal strategy, former Green Beret Dr. Jeffrey MacDonald has filed for parole. It's been nearly 35 years since MacDonald's wife and two young daughters were slain at Fort Bragg, and more than 25 since MacDonald was convicted of the murders. All along, his alibi has been that drug-addled hippies killed his family.

Poles Permit Take Down of Hijacked Planes
An anti-terrorism law that allows Polish authorities to shoot down hijacked planes as a last resort took effect Thursday, part of efforts to protect the country from attacks similar to those of Sept. 11.
The law allows either the defense minister or the head of the Polish Air Force to order the shooting down of civilian or military aircraft whose hijackers defy orders to land.

Iraq a new terror breeding ground
War created a haven, CIA advisers report
Iraq has replaced Afghanistan as the training ground for the next generation of "professionalized" terrorists, according to a report released yesterday by the National Intelligence Council, the CIA director's think tank.
Iraq provides terrorists with "a training ground, a recruitment ground, the opportunity for enhancing technical skills," said David B. Low, the national intelligence officer for transnational threats. "There is even, under the best scenario, over time, the likelihood that some of the jihadists who are not killed there will, in a sense, go home, wherever home is, and will therefore disperse to various other countries."

Report: White House fought interrogation curbs
Congressional leaders had hopes for new restrictions, paper says
At the urging of the White House, congressional leaders scrapped a legislative measure last month that would have imposed new restrictions on the use of extreme interrogation measures by American intelligence officers, The New York Times reported Wednesday.
The defeat of the proposal affected one of the most obscure arenas of the war on terrorism, involving the CIA's secret detention and interrogation of top terror leaders, according to the newspaper, citing congressional officials.

Report: U.S. conducting secret missions in Iran
New Yorker article says U.S. commandos in place in 10 Middle East nations
The United States has been conducting secret reconnaissance missions inside Iran to help identify potential nuclear, chemical and missile targets, The New Yorker magazine reported Sunday.

BlackHawk HydraStorm Force 5: Hydration + Storage
By: Frank Borelli, 17 January 2005
The first thing I need to do is thank Blackwater for the fantastic treatment in our working relationship across the past two years. Thanks, once again, to their focus on getting the job done, and the dedication they show in "carrying for the troops", we will continue to bring you equipment reviews that are written in plain English with a no-holds-barred approach. That said... This week we're taking a look at the Force 5 Backpack / Hydration System from HydraStorm, one of the companies belonging to the BlackHawk Products Group.
When I started searching through my gear looking for a pack that I could wear / carry through SHOT Show at the end of the month, I realized that I didn't have anything I felt was 1) of the proper size, and 2) would carry a hydration system. Since, from what I've been told, covering SHOT Show involves walking the seventeen miles worth of floor plan, I felt a hydration system and snack food would be mandatory. In all fairness, I do have a large pack / hydration system, but I felt that it was too big to carry around SHOT, and I didn't want to have to pull all of my tac gear out of it just to have to repack it when I got back. So I gave HydraStorm a call to see what they might have that would be just the right size. After having some conversations with the Brand Manager, I settled on the Force 5 in Coyote Tan.

TO AND FOR PEACE KEEPERS OF THE MILITARY AND ALL LAW ENFORCEMENT
AT ALL LEVELS AND ALL OF THOSE IN THEIR SUPPORT SYSTEMS AND ALL
WHO CARE ABOUT THEM AND THEIR WELFARE.
I STOOD THERE BEFORE THEM
They had just been given diplomas and sworn in as our newest police
officers..
They were so proud and happy that they glistened.. shiny.. sharp..
They had just begun the honeymoon that would shortly become field
training with
testing and observation..
Three hundred had been tested for these positions.. twenty four passed
and were
accepted as police recruits.. 16 GRADUATED TO GO TO FIELD TRAINING.
I THOUGHT ABOUT HOW I FELT AS THOUGH I COULD BURST MYSELF.. FROM
THE JOY AND GLADNESS THAT I FELT FOR THEM AS I LOOKED INTO THEIR
FACES AND SHARED THEIR ENTHUSIASM.. THEN I TOLD THEM HOW VALUABLE
THEY ARE TO US IN THIS NATION AND TO ME. I GAVE THEM THE BLESSING OF
MY COMMANDER-IN-CHIEF.. AND I WENT OUT FROM AMONG THEM TO
PREPARE FOR MY NEXT DUTY..
