"Poppies and the Peace: International drug trade starts in rural Afghanistan"
by Dr. Derrin R. Smith, GSIS Professor Ultimately, the discussion and debate in this "shura" meeting of village and district elders would all come down to poppy cultivation and the opium trade. As long as there was demand in the west, there would be growers in this region of Afghanistan capitalizing on the opportunity. Six years of intense drought in remote Bazar-e Panjyai, Kandahar Province, Afghanistan had left the landscape barren of the traditional fruit orchards and cash crops that had characterized much of the history of this region. Elders from the district villages were holding a "shura" or council meeting, to discuss the issues confronting their respective citizens. Fifty-seven men, of varying ages and levels of social status, squatted on the concrete porch with tea and sweet candy in front of them. Security personnel armed with assault weapons guarded the doors, the gate into the compound and even kept lookout from the rooftop. Other men arrived, briefly acknowledged the leaders of the shura, and then disappeared into the darkness of the stone building where other meetings were convened. Serious issues were being discussed, some which could not bear the intense light of day. On the porch, 29-year-old Ryan Patrick Murphy of the US Army, far from his hometown of Emmetsburg, IA adjusted his assault rifle in his lap as he shifted in his chair at the right of the senior elder of the shura.

Guerrilla-Warfare
By David H. Hackworth
Like every vet I've talked to, I was anguished and angered when nearly 100 Americans were blown up - 18 of them dying in the blast - by an infiltrated suicide bomber at lunch last week in a large mess tent in Mosul, Iraq.
Hank "The Gunfighter" Emerson, a great combat leader and top guerrilla-warfare tactician who rose from a two-fisted West Point cadet to three-star general, almost melted my phone when he roared: "Why were those soldiers packed in a mess hall on a guerrilla battlefield? Did their leaders think they were on some kind of gourmet picnic?"

Being in Balance
Doran 2004
As important as it is to get yourself motivated to face the day. It is equally if not more important to wind down and leave work at work. There are many ways in which this can be accomplished. I am in the habit when I enter my sanctuary (My Home, Hotel, etc, basically any area where I know I am safe, and there is a wall between me and the outside world) I begin to clear my mind and concentrate on the job at hand which may be nothing more than playing with my children or setting down in my chair next to the fire to read a book.
Warriors are entitled to rest and relaxation as much as anyone else. In fact I would say more so. We are a different breed when everyone else if running from trouble we are running into it. We actually smell the victims blood and the blood of our fallen comrades there is no corporate censor that decides what we see or will not see.

IRA raid damaging to peace process
Allegations the IRA was involved in a massive bank robbery in Belfast has damaged the peace process and is a "huge disappointment", says the Northern Ireland Secretary.
"The fact that the IRA has been blamed now by the chief constable for this robbery does have serious implications for the peace process," Paul Murphy told the BBC's Today program on Saturday.
On Friday, Northern Ireland's police chief Hugh Orde said IRA was responsible for a 26.5 million heist at the headquarters of Northern Bank in central Belfast.

Five volumes of grand jury testimony were released late Thursday after the Los Angeles Times and other news organizations mounted a successful legal challenge against defense efforts to keep them sealed.

The Secret Service and D.C. police plan to erect roadblocks and screen pedestrians as far as three blocks from Pennsylvania Avenue in the tightest security cordon ever for a presidential inauguration, downtown businesspeople say.
Property owners, building tenants and private security officials said they have been told that vehicles will be barred from the blocks surrounding the historic avenue, which President Bush's motorcade will travel before he is sworn in at noon Jan. 20 at the U.S. Capitol and afterward when he leads a parade back to the White House.

Lasers' Ubiquity Could Pose Problems
Lasers mark dates on boxes of butter. They cut gems and engrave vehicle identification numbers into cars. They are the key components in compact disc and DVD players. Like so much in the high-tech world, they keep getting cheaper and more powerful. And their ubiquity could pose a problem for aviation.
There have been at least eight reports in recent weeks of lasers pointed at aircraft cockpits as they approached for landing. A New Jersey man was arrested Tuesday after authorities say he admitted to pointing a laser at a helicopter and a jet. The FBI and Department of Homeland Security sent a memo to law enforcement agencies last month saying they had evidence terrorists have explored using lasers as weapons.

General Warns of 'Spectacular' Iraq Plots
A U.S. general warned Friday that insurgents may be planning "spectacular" attacks to scare voters in the three weeks before Iraq's landmark elections, and Shiite and Sunni religious leaders voiced sharply divergent views on whether the vote should be held at all.
Air Force Brig. Gen. Erv Lessel, who is deputy chief of staff for strategic communications in Iraq, said the United States has no intelligence indicating specific plots, but he said American leaders expected a rise in attacks.

Sectarian Unrest Kills 11 in Pakistan
At least 11 people were killed in a remote town in northern Pakistan on Saturday as violence erupted after an attack on a minority Shi'ite Muslim leader, official and hospital sources said.
The authorities imposed a curfew in Gilgit, the main town in the mountainous region known as the Northern Areas, and called out the army to quell the violence after enraged Shi'ite Muslims went on a rampage following the attack on their leader Ziauddin Moosavi.
Moosavi was traveling in his car to a mosque in the center of Gilgit, 240 km (150 miles) north of the capital Islamabad, when unidentified gunmen opened fire, critically injuring him and his three guards. Two of the guards later died.

Leatherman Charge XTi: A Multi-Tool For The Future
By: Frank Borelli
In the 1980s, when I first became a Military Policeman and then a civilian police officer, I was instructed by more experienced officers about the value of having a utility tool on my gunbelt. Being young and inexperienced I had visions of using the wire cutters to defuse bombs and the many tools to improvise traps. Reality was that I usually needed that utility tool - an original Leatherman - to take license plates off of vehicles being impounded or to disconnect illegal lighting on a street racer of some sort. Since those days utility tools have come a long way in design and materials, and the Leatherman Charge XTi is a far cry from the Leatherman I used to carry.
I'm going to point out up front that, for hard use environments, I favor utility tools that don't have small accessories to carry around. I purchase my folding knives specifically with common hardware (Philips or slotted screws, etc) rather than Allan screws, Torx screws, or other fancy headed devices. While having all of those small accessories is great in a protected environment, when you drop one in the dark in the woods it's pretty much gone - or you've just lost a lot of time searching for it. Those utility tools that come equipped with small accessories are great; just remember to leave the small accessories behind on trips into harsh areas and choose a utility tool.
