QUOTE FOR THE WEEK

True warriors are fierce because their training is fierce.

-Miyamoto Musashi 1645

Leadership is solving problems. The day soldiers stop bringing you their problems is the day you have stopped leading them. They have either lost confidence that you can help or concluded you do not care. Either case is a failure of leadership.

Colin Powell

Kick Starting Your Brain

Doran 2004

Having a Mantra that we recite daily is just one more weapon in the warriors arsenal. It keeps our mind sharp and puts our brain on a positive track. It takes little or no effort.

It is not so much what you say or how you say it. You must teach yourself to believe it.

You can use yours mine or someone else's. You can make it in the form of a prayer, song or sonnet. The words and how they are said is strictly up to you as long as they are positive and pertain to the job at hand which is keeping yourself and your partners alive. The words should also kick start brain and get it into warrior mode.

We all have what I call mindless time as we prepare for the day. We get up have coffee, lay back look at the clock and think about how can I lay here until the last possible second. Then we get into negative mode and worry about things that do not even matter.

The worse thing we can do is allow this time to be wasted. Instead of looking at all of the negative, we should get up and do what is immediately necessary (IE: drain the bladder) and then begin the day reciting words which prepares us for battle.

The Developing Iraqi Insurgency: Status at End-2004

Failures in Recognizing the Growth and Character of the Insurgent Threat
Much has been made of the decision to disband the Iraqi Army, and many see it as a key failure in US policy. As has been explained earlier, however, the decision needs to be put in perspective. Most of the Iraqi Army had either been shattered in the field or had deserted before ORHA, much less the CPA, entered the country. In many cases, key facilities had been destroyed or looted to the point where barracks could not be occupied. Not "disbanding" was not a choice in any serious sense; it had already happened, and events since that time have shown that creating effective forces would have required a massive training, equipment, and facility improvement effort - and massive purging of low grade forces and inadequate leaders.

Buyer Beware

By Frank Cucci
Imagine if you asked your average Special Operations operator (if there is such a thing as an "average" SOF operator) to critique the performance of a symphony orchestra, or describe the aura and depth of an oil painting. I think it is fair to say that most of us could not give a very informed opinion. Most of us simply lack knowledge and exposure to that particular field.

BREAKING NEWS FOR THE PROFESSIONAL

Agencies still at odds over fingerprinting
Lack of unified system leaves hole in antiterror screening

More than three years after the Sept. 11 attacks, the Bush administration has failed to create a unified U.S. fingerprint database because of agency infighting, meaning most visitors to the country still aren't fully screened for terrorist or criminal ties, the Justice Department's watchdog warned Wednesday.
Continued bureaucratic clashing - the very behavior the Bush administration pledged to end after the attacks - "creates a risk that a terrorist could enter the country undetected," said Inspector General Glenn A. Fine in his fourth report about the problem.

In money-saving bid, TSA slashes party costs $1,500 cheese plates are out, but bonuses stay

The Transportation Security Administration nixed the $1,500 cheese plates and $4-a-cup coffee it had at last year's ceremony recognizing the accomplishments of its employees, and instead opted for off-brand fruit punch and store-bought cookies for this year's event.
Those spending cuts and others helped TSA slash the cost of recognition awards from $462,000 last year to $130,000 in 2004, according to figures supplied to MSNBC.com by the agency. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/6770239/

Bus threat at Virginia naval base a hoax
Authorities who isolated a transit bus Thursday after an anonymous caller threatened to detonate a bio-terror device on board on Virginia's Norfolk Naval Station said the incident was a hoax.
Naval officials at the Pentagon said an anonymous threat phoned in to Norfolk police, authorities on the base and officials at the Hampton Road Transit agency said that a bomb had been planted on a bus en route to the base. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/6769814/

FBI: Laser Beams Aimed Into Cockpits 6 Times Recently
Laser Beams Could Temporarily Blind Pilots

An FBI official said there have been six recent incidents involving laser beams being aimed into cockpits of commercial airliners. A federal law enforcement official said the bureau is investigating one such report in Cleveland and two in Colorado Springs, Colo., as well as three others. The first three took place on Monday, and all planes involved landed safely. There's no word on when or where the other three incidents occurred, although the official indicated they all happened over the last four days.

Colombia: Drug lord captured
Police captured a reputed leader of the Norte del Valle drug cartel Tuesday, the latest arrest in a U.S.-backed effort to dismantle a gang accused of trafficking half of all cocaine sold in the United States in the 1990s.
Dagoberto Florez, a reputed capo or leader in the cartel, was on a list of most wanted alleged cocaine kingpins sought by U.S. authorities under a court order handed down in New York in May. The U.S. government offered a $5 million reward for his capture.

Saudis say attack appears hastily launched
Government: Militants were likely spooked by earlier gunbattle

Plotters of a double car bombing in the Saudi capital were spooked by a gunbattle with police earlier in the week and launched their attack hastily, failing to penetrate the security installations they targeted, a Saudi Interior Ministry spokesman said Thursday.
The car bombings Wednesday night targeted the Interior Ministry and a recruiting center for the kingdom's anti-terrorism squad. No serious damage was reported, and, while the spokesman said at least 10 militants were killed, only one other person - a limousine driver - was believed dead.

Militants warn Iraqis not to vote on Jan. 30
700 election workers in Mosul said to quit after being threatened

Three militant groups warned Iraqis against voting in Jan. 30 elections, saying Thursday that people participating in the "dirty farce" risked attack. All 700 employees of the electoral commission in Mosul reportedly resigned after being threatened.
The warning came a day after insurgents in Mosul, which has seen increased violence in recent weeks, launched a highly coordinated assault on a U.S. military outpost. The United States said 25 insurgents were believed slain and one American soldier was killed in the battle, which involved strafing runs by U.S. warplanes.

Saddam Gets VIP Defense
He used to be America's top law enforcement official. Now, he's apparently one of Saddam Hussein's lawyers. The former Iraqi dictator's chief lawyer says former Attorney General Ramsey Clark has signed on to defend Saddam. The lawyer says Clark joined the team after Saddam said last week he wanted to pass on his regards to the former attorney general.

Iraqis Train to Be Elite Security Fighters
They're commandos, elite forces battling terrorists - and they're Iraqi. Shiites, Sunnis and Kurds are working together to protect their homeland. And they're trained by American soldiers to do it. FOX News spent a few days watching the unit train to become part of Iraq's security force, which currently has 120,000 members and a small-but-growing number of skilled fighters from all parts of the country. http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,142919,00.html

Muslim Extremists Preach Violence in Europe
LONDON - He's called Sheik Terra.
With a Koran in one hand and pistol in the other, the British rapper calls for the murder of non-Muslims, including several world leaders, on a videotape.
The video is well known in one London mosque, whose imam - or leader - is accused of setting up a terrorist training camp in Oregon and whose followers don't like Western media.

FRANKS REVIEW

Undercover Comfort Gloves

By: Frank Borelli

In the law enforcement and military operational arenas, the need to protect our hands is great. What we need to protect our hands from varies from assignment to assignment and also often depends on our operational environment. Sometimes we need only protect our hands from the cold. Other times we need to protect our hands from sharp objects, heat, electricity, etc. Undercover Comfort is now producing a variety of gloves, each designed for a specific purpose.

In past reviews I've written about some other products from UnderCover Comfort (UCC). I frequently wear the hoody that I purchased at the ASLET 2004 Conference. The Tactical Training Suit that I reviewed (two weeks ago?) is now appreciated during simunitions and paintball training to keep down the number of bruises received each day. UCC provided several pairs of gloves to test and they've proven quite useful.

"HAPPY NEW YEAR"

I have heard that greeting often in the last few days. For a long, long time now I have pondered and mulled over this happy wish from those who know me. In the process of my thinking I have travelled from the beginning of my career 'til now and mulled over the incidents of the journey.

James, one of the New Testament writers, says, "Come now, let us say, If the lord wills we will go to such and such a place and we will do such
and such a thing." Not one of us knows what a moment may bring...... no
matter how hard we strain to see into the future...... immediate or distant...... the absolute knowledge of the future eludes us.

First, I have discovered that their wishes for my "Happy New Year" were good to hear and receive, but those wishes did not determine for me whether or not the year was happy. Only the attitude with which I faced each moment of each day, each day of each week, each week of each month, each month of each year..... and all the years of my life and my career as well.... only my attitude determined whether my moment or any other measurement of time was happy for me.
