Good Morning,
EUROPE - THY NAME IS COWARDICE
(Commentary by Mathias Döpfner)
Matthias Döpfner, Chief Executive of German publisher Axel Springer AG, has
written a blistering attack in the daily WELT against the cowardice of Europe
in the face of the Islamic threat. Hartmut Lau translated the article for us.
A few days ago Henryk M. Broder wrote in Welt am Sonntag, "Europe
- your family name is appeasement." It's a phrase you can't get out of
your head because it's so terribly true.
Appeasement cost millions of
Jews and non-Jews their lives as England and France, allies at the time,
negotiated and hesitated too long before they noticed that Hitler had to be
fought, not bound to agreements. Appeasement stabilized communism in the Soviet
Union and East Germany
in that part of Europe where inhuman, suppressive
governments were glorified as the ideologically correct alternative to all
other possibilities.
Appeasement crippled Europe
when genocide ran rampant in Kosovo and we Europeans debated and debated
until the Americans came in and did our work for us. Rather than protecting
democracy in the Middle East, European appeasement,
camouflaged behind the fuzzy word "equidistance," now countenances
suicide bombings in Israel
by fundamentalist Palestinians.
Appeasement generates a
mentality that allows Europe to ignore 300,000 victims
of Saddam's torture and murder machinery and, motivated by the
self-righteousness of the peace-movement, to issue bad grades to George Bush.
A particularly grotesque form of appeasement is reacting to the escalating
violence by Islamic fundamentalists in Holland
and elsewhere by suggesting that we should really have a Muslim holiday in Germany.
What else has to happen before the European public and its political
leadership get it? There is a sort of crusade underway, an especially
perfidious crusade consisting of systematic attacks by fanatic Muslims,
focused on civilians and directed against our free, open Western societies.
It is a conflict that will most likely last longer than the great military
conflicts of the last century-a conflict conducted by an enemy that cannot be
tamed by tolerance and accommodation but only spurred on by such gestures,
which will be mistaken for signs of weakness.
Two recent American presidents had the courage needed for anti-appeasement:
Reagan and Bush. Reagan ended the Cold War and Bush, supported only by the
social democrat Blair acting on moral conviction, recognized the danger in
the Islamic fight against democracy. His place in history will have to be
evaluated after a number of years have passed.
In the meantime, Europe sits back with charismatic
self-confidence in the multicultural corner instead of defending liberal
society's values and being an attractive center of power on the same playing
field as the true great powers, America
and China.
On the contrary-we Europeans present ourselves, in contrast to the
intolerant, as world champions in tolerance, which even (Germany's
Interior Minister) Otto Schily justifiably criticizes. Why? Because we're so
moral? I fear it's more because we're so materialistic.
For his policies, Bush risks the fall of the dollar, huge amounts of
additional national debt and a massive and persistent burden on the American
economy-because everything is at stake. While the alleged capitalistic robber
barons in American know their priorities, we timidly defend our social
welfare systems. Stay out of it! It could get expensive. We'd rather discuss
the 35-hour workweek or our dental health plan coverage. Or listen to TV
pastors preach about "reaching out to murderers." These days, Europe
reminds me of an elderly aunt who hides her last pieces of jewelry with
shaking hands when she notices a robber has broken into a neighbor's house. Europe,
thy name is cowardice.
Sincerely, Gary Jackson
President

DEALING
WITH THE PRINCIPAL
By Brian Bonfiglio - Director of DoS programs at
Blackwater
Why do I need all these men and armored
vehicles? That's ridiculous! Do you really think someone would want to hurt
me?
Within the protective field there are many widely
used terms, acronyms and descriptive phrases, but none are more commonly
heard than the questions and comments heard than the questions and comments
made by the Principal.
Each Principal has his own personality and disposition, likes and dislikes,
habits and traits, but most important factor concerning you is whether the
Principal wants a security detail or not. If the Principal hires you, he most
likely will treat you fairly so long as you meet his requirements. On the
other hand, if you are hired, for example, by a company that has been
contracted by a company or government agency, you may work for a Principal
that prefers not to have a protective detail.

As a patrol officer you are more likely to confront a suspect armed with a
handgun than you are a rifle or shotgun. From 1994 to 2003 of the 616
officers killed in the line of duty 425 were killed with a handgun. Just last
year (2003), nationwide there were 1,866 officers assaulted with firearms.

One-Shot
Drops
By Anthony J. Pinizzotto, Harry A. Kern, and Edward
F. Davis
A false assumption or preconceived expectation that a well-placed shot will
render an offender harmless can prove deadly for law enforcement officers.
On a summer evening in the northeastern part of the United States, a patrol
officer received a radio dispatch at approximately 7 p.m. to respond to an
address for a disorderly subject. The officer arrived at the location and
parked his patrol vehicle on the opposite side of the street, several houses
away. Before exiting the vehicle, the officer paused to observe the scene. He
saw a male move from behind a large tree in front of the address of the
alleged disorderly subject. The officer started to exit his vehicle, but then
stopped when he saw the male, with a gun in each hand, begin to run toward
him. The man fired both weapons at the officer, who returned two rounds from
his service weapon, striking the male in the center of his chest. However,
the man continued to fire. One round struck the officer in the head, killing
him instantly. The male survived the two gunshot wounds and later was
convicted of killing the officer. http://www.fbi.gov/publications/leb/2004/oct2004/oct04leb.htm#page_15

Government: Evidence gained by torture allowed
Judges could rule soon on Guantanamo detainee suits
U.S. military panels reviewing the detention of foreigners as enemy
combatants are allowed to use evidence gained by torture in deciding whether
to keep them imprisoned at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, the government conceded in
court Thursday.
The acknowledgment by Principal Deputy Associate Attorney General Brian Boyle
came during a U.S. District Court hearing on lawsuits brought by some of the
550 foreigners imprisoned at the U.S. naval base in Cuba. The lawsuits
challenge their detention without charges for up to three years so far.

Iranians Nabbed For Trying to Get Night Vision Gear
U.S. and Austrian authorities have arrested two Iranian men on charges of
attempting to illegally export thousands of sophisticated American
night-vision (search) systems for Iran's military, U.S. officials said
Friday.
The alleged transactions were eventually expected to involved about 3,000 of
the advanced helmet-mounted Generation III systems, which can amplify even
faint starlight so that soldiers can see to fight in the dark. http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,140437,00.html
Meth's Sexual Effect Explains Addictions
At a recent task force meeting on the epidemic of methamphetamine (search)
use in Appalachia, Gov. Phil Bredesen winced when a federal prosecutor described
the illegal drug as an aphrodisiac.
Doctors and government officials don't like to talk much about it, but there
is an obvious reason people get hooked on methamphetamine: sex.

Violence in Baghdad Kills at Least
25 Iraqis
A suicide car bomber plowed into a Shi'ite mosque in Baghdad after dawn
prayers on Friday, killing 14 people and stoking fears that sectarian
divisions over when to hold elections could unleash further bloodshed.
In a second dawn attack in the capital, guerrillas killed at least 11
policemen in an assault on a police station.

Tenet calls for Internet security
Former CIA Director George J. Tenet yesterday called for new security
measures to guard against attacks on the United States that use the Internet,
which he called "a potential Achilles' heel."
"I know that these actions will be controversial in this age when we
still think the Internet is a free and open society with no control or
accountability," he told an information-technology security conference
in Washington, "but ultimately the Wild West must give way to governance
and control."

Looking inside the mind of a suicide
bomber
Former Israeli soldier examines what motivates desperate attacks
"I boarded the bus, I thought about my family, my child, my wife. It was
hard to decide, that was the hardest - I pay but others don't - only we
pay."
These ticking flashbacks were spoken by a Palestinian suicide bomber named
Rifat.
Rifat was strapped into a jacket containing bolts, nails, and most
importantly explosives. He boarded the Israeli bus and sat all the way in the
back waiting for the bus to fill up. His finger clutched the switch that
would act as God to determine who would live and die.

Explosions in Madrid; ETA suspected
Two police injured; blasts described as small
The Basque separatist group ETA set off five bombs Friday at gasoline
stations around Madrid, putting a stranglehold on the city at the start of a
long holiday weekend.
Two police officers were slightly wounded, officials said.
The attacks came a day after six jailed former senior leaders of the group
urged it to abandon violence, saying that after decades of bombings and
shootings, it had finally been defeated by Spanish security forces. They also
marked a significant return to violence after months of relative inactivity
for ETA, which had been severely weakened by a police crackdown that netted
more than 100 suspects this year.

5.11
Tactical Tops
By Frank Borelli
Near the end of May this year I visited the Extreme Outfitters Expo held in
Virginia Beach, VA. One of the major vendors I met there was 5.11 Tactical -
the makers of the now famous Royal Robbins pants, shorts, shirts and other
garments. A couple weeks later I received a box FULL of their products and
I've been wearing them out ever since. This week I'm going to take a look at
the Undercover Vest, their Shirt (both long and short sleeve) and one of
their Polo shirts (the one I wear all the time).

I
HAD PLANNED
on two weeks away visiting old friends and
classmates from home and high
school. Recently I checked on many classmates to find that numerous ones
were already dead and gone and several more were very seriously ill.
By the time I could leave from here my time was cut to three days because
of circumstances beyond my control. When I arrived my time was almost all
taken up with ministry and visiting.
On Sunday I was invited to preach in an old country church where I had
not been since about age ten for Vacation Bible School. In my memory it was a
large building.
When I entered it was no longer a large building. It seemed small
until it dawned
upon me that I was two and one half times larger on Sunday when I entered
the building than I was the last time I was there. THE BUILDING HAD NOT
CHANGED
