Two officers arrested a suspect and secured him in the back seat of their patrol vehicle.1 One officer stood beside the car while the other sat in the front seat to use the radio. Suddenly, despite being handcuffed behind his back and belted into the seat, the suspect began shooting at the officers with a .45-caliber handgun that he had concealed in his waistband. The officer standing beside the vehicle died at the scene.

Homeland Security seeks to boost citizen role in war on terror
A Homeland Security Department official on Thursday announced two initiatives aimed at incorporating more citizens into the war on terrorism.
First of all, the department started working with disabled veterans. "By working with disabled veterans, their fidelity to the nation is rewarded and they can continue to work for the security of the country," Daniel Sutherland of the department's Office for Civil Rights and Civil Liberties, said at a Heritage Foundation panel discussion.

Explosions rock central Baghdad
New commander takes charge of coalition forces in Iraq
fired rockets Friday in central Baghdad, hitting at least one hotel used by Westerners but setting their own van on fire, police and witnesses said. One man was wounded, hospital officials said.
The van, apparently used as a platform to fire the rockets, burned just off Firdous Square, where the statue of Saddam Hussein was hauled down on April 9, 2003, when Baghdad fell to American forces. Clouds of black smoke billowed over a blue domed mosque on the square.

The Spyderco World Trade Center Knife

As I sit typing this on the Fourth of July - arguably the most important holiday for America - it seems only fitting to review a knife that honors heroes of our country: the Spyderco World Trade Center Knife. Normally, a review on a manufacturer's knives would include several lock-blades, or various models, but in my mind Independence Day and the attacks on our country that occurred on September 11, 2001, are linked. Today I only review this one knife: forgive the shorter-normal-review and the interspersed editorial comments as you read about this truly unique knife. Created to honor the 2819 Americans lost in the attacks on the World Trade Center, to me such a knife serves as an excellent reminder of American will and pride.
