Army Told Not to Use Israeli Bullets in Iraq

Israeli-made bullets bought by the U.S. Army to plug a shortfall should be used for training only, not to fight Muslim guerrillas in Iraq and Afghanistan, U.S. lawmakers told Army generals on Thursday.
Since the Army has other stockpiled ammunition, "by no means, under any circumstances should a round (from Israel) be utilized," said Rep. Neil Abercrombie of Hawaii, the top Democrat on a House of Representatives Armed Services subcommittee with jurisdiction over land forces.

Hiding in Plain Sight A Peek into the Witness Security Program

By DOUGLAS A. KASH, J.D.
In mid-July 2003, a fisherman on the Shenandoah River in Northern Virginia found the body of Brenda "Smiley" Paz. She was an intelligent, energetic 17-year-old who was 17 weeks pregnant and a former gang member.1 She had an "encyclopedic knowledge" of Mara Salvatrucha (MS-13), a violent Salvadoran gang, and educated investigators of its history, structure, and operations.2 Paz knew her only viable way out of MS-13 was to help put its members in jail, and word soon spread that she was an informant, which caused her to be "green-lighted," or targeted for murder by fellow MS-13 gang members.

Conducting Surveillance Operations How to Get the Most Out of Them

By JOHN T. NASON
As the Hollywood detective sits in his four-door sedan, he downs numerous cups of coffee to stay awake and occasionally speaks into a two-way radio to other officers also maintaining the same stake-out ritual. Then, finally, in the predawn hours, the villain emerges from the location, playing right into the hands of the seasoned and street-smart hero who tails him to where he commits a crime, takes a hostage, or retrieves some stashed contraband. Then, in action-packed style, the detective handles the entire situation, bringing the case to a successful conclusion.
While surveillances usually do not follow this scenario, those who have conducted such operations will admit that participating in a productive surveillance can be a rewarding and, at times, an exhilarating experience. Second only to operating confidential sources, surveillance is the most frequently employed investigative technique in obtaining arrests, indictments, and convictions for the FBI.

BREAKING NEWS FOR THE PROFESSIONAL

Sweeping stun guns to target crowds
Weapons that can incapacitate crowds of people by sweeping a lightning-like beam of electricity across them are being readied for sale to military and police forces in the US and Europe.
At present, commercial stun guns target one person at a time, and work only at close quarters. The new breed of non-lethal weapons can be used on many people at once and operate over far greater distances.

Clinton first linked al Qaeda to Saddam
The Clinton administration talked about firm evidence linking Saddam Hussein's regime to Osama bin Laden's al Qaeda network years before President Bush made the same statements.
The issue arose again this month after the National Commission on Terrorist Attacks Upon the United States reported there was no "collaborative relationship" between the old Iraqi regime and bin Laden.

U.S. jets pound Zarqawi hideout
U.S. jets again targeted terror mastermind Abu Musab Zarqawi, pounding one of his suspected hideouts in Fallujah yesterday in a strike that U.S. officials said killed up to 25 people. Iraqi leaders warned of more insurgent attacks after a wave of bloodshed blamed on Zarqawi.
It was the third air strike against Zarqawi's network in Fallujah in a week, and it came as U.S. tanks exchanged fire with militants on the outskirts of the city, 40 miles west of Baghdad.

FRANKS REVIEW

CamelBak: Contemporary Hydration Systems

In reviewing that past few equipment articles I've done I realized that I had been remiss in not completing a CamelBak review that I had promised. In this week's review, we're going to take a look at two CamelBak systems and a couple of accessories that can make using, and maintaining, them a little easier. Future reviews will examine other hydration systems.

The two CamelBak hydration systems we're going to look at are the Hi-Viz and the Transformer. Ironically, when I saw the Hi-Viz the first time, I thought it was the ugliest hydration system I'd ever seen. As a police officer, I'm not fond of the high visibility orange traffic safety vests - even though I know that wearing them makes me easier to see and less likely to be accidentally hit. I say "ironically" because it turns out to be my most used system.
