Good morning, Sorry the BTW is a little later than usual, will not go into a long explanation. We start the World SWAT Challenge this week. If you are in the area, the competetion on Friday and Saturday is open to spectators. Dinner on Thursday night at Waterside has a fantastic guest speaker in Ambassador Cofer Black. Ambassador Black's responsibilities include coordinating U.S. Government efforts to improve counterterrorism cooperation with foreign governments, including the policy and planning of the Department's Antiterrorism Training Assistance Program. You can still register for the dinner at http://www.swatchallenge.com
FEATURE LETTER THIS WEEK.... We know conclusively that the Abu Ghraib abuse scandal is as phony as a Bill Clinton sex denial because there are no calls for the resignation of the one individual most responsible for the abuses. That would be the officer in charge of Abu Ghraib and all US military prisons in Iraq, the commander of the 800th Military Police Brigade, Army Brigadier General Janis Karpinski. And why have there been no calls for her resignation? Let's be honest. It is because she is a woman. Thus the frightening lesson of the abuse scandal: Political correctness trumps national security even in wartime. http://www.tothepointnews.com/article.php?id=283&i=

How Intelligent Is Intelligence?
Louis Vincent Riggio By Talley Griffith In watching the September 11 Commission hearings recently, it became stunningly clear where the failures rest in our inability to prevent these attacks and to eliminate their perpetrators. The sad part is that these failures are nothing new. The very frightening part, is that unless changes happen fast, it will undoubtedly happen again. The faults, failures, and blames do not belong at the feet of President Bush, or Vice-President Cheney. They do not belong with Bill Clinton, Al Gore, Condoleeza Rice, or John Ashcroft. Anyone who has ever worked with, or dealt with, the federal government knows that there is no way the top leaders in Washington have a clue what is happening "in the field" except by way of their daily reports. To blame the leaders is simple, but inaccurate. It is akin to blaming a parent when their great-grandchild makes a mistake. You must blame the child itself. In this case, the child is the "Careerist" in the government intelligence agencies, and it is high time responsibility was brought upon them for their failures and negligence. http://www.blackwaterusa.com/btw2004/articles/0517griffith.html The Edge of the Razor Summary The strategy of the United States in its war with radical Islam is in a state of crisis. The global strategic framework is in much better shape than the tactical situation in the Iraq theater of operations -- but this is of only limited comfort to Washington because massive tactical failure in Iraq could lead to strategic collapse. The situation is balanced on the razor's edge. The United States could recover from its tactical failures, or suffer a massive defeat if it fails to do so. One thing is certain: The United States cannot remain balanced on the razor's edge indefinitely. Read the Analysis here>>>> http://www.blackwaterusa.com/btw2004/articles/0517razor.html

Private Eye The federal government can't collect vast amounts of data on citizens. But it can buy the information from a private company that does. Arriving in Windward, a planned neighborhood tucked inside the Atlanta suburb of Alpharetta, the first things you notice are the trees. Strategically placed in thickets, they shield residents from unsightly views of the Georgia 400 toll road, which pumps traffic out of the bustling city to the south and into the affluent northern enclaves. The trees divide the 3,400-acre development into sections, comprising office parks, strip malls, chain restaurants and subdivisions of single family homes costing from $200,000 to $2 million. At the center of this idyllic landscape sits the corporate headquarters for ChoicePoint Inc. - a company that is central to the federal government's efforts to give all of America the kind of safe and secure world that Windward symbolizes. http://www.govexec.com/features/0304/0304s1.htm Dispatch #006 from Camp Mittica near Tallil airbase, Iraq ON PATROL WITH MULTI-NATIONAL DIVISION, CENTRAL SOUTH (MND/CS) MPs Major Florea is head of the Romanian Military Police (MP) detachment at Camp Mittica, Iraq, where he must coordinate his patrol and peacekeeping activities with Italian Carabinieri and Portuguese gendarmeries. They are all cops, though, pretty much like cops anywhere and the camaraderie is evident as we tool around the area. To be effective in their jobs they spend a certain amount of time in their patrol vehicles, but their best moments are on foot, mingling with the locals. That is where the goodwill is created, up close, on the beat, walking the blocks and meeting the locals in person. http://www.blackwaterusa.com/btw2004/articles/0517dispatch.html American Cannibalism We are doing to ourselves what the enemy could not. By Victor Davis Hanson Have we any memory of a man in a suit and tie, nearly three years ago wading through the din and panic amid the morning rubble, assuring millions of stunned Americans that the national headquarters of their armed forces was still intact and capable of defending us after the mass murder of 3,000? And have we no shame in recognizing that should some congressional critics and Washington harpies get their way, Americans will accomplish what bin Laden's suicide bombers could not on September 11: remove America's finest Secretary of Defense in a half century? http://www.nationalreview.com/hanson/hanson200405140838.asp
Pentagon denies prison scandal stems from secret program gone awry ARTICLE 15-6 INVESTIGATION OF THE 800th MILITARY POLICE BRIGADE U) On 19 January 2004, Lieutenant General (LTG) Ricardo S. Sanchez, Commander, Combined Joint Task Force Seven (CJTF-7) requested that the Commander, US Central Command, appoint an Investigating Officer (IO) in the grade of Major General (MG) or above to investigate the conduct of operations within the 800th Military Police (MP) Brigade. LTG Sanchez requested an investigation of detention and internment operations by the Brigade from 1 November 2003 to present. LTG Sanchez cited recent reports of detainee abuse, escapes from confinement facilities, and accountability lapses, which indicated systemic problems within the brigade and suggested a lack of clear standards, proficiency, and leadership. LTG Sanchez requested a comprehensive and all-encompassing inquiry to make findings and recommendations concerning the fitness and performance of the 800th MP Brigade. http://news.findlaw.com/cnn/docs/iraq/tagubarpt.html | ||

| SOG Folding KnivesI was remiss last week in not mentioning National Police Week, which we've now come to the end of. For all that is going on around the world, and all of the fallen soldiers we honor, let's take a moment to remember the fallen police officers and deputy sheriffs here at home that fall as they protect and serve the public. If you've never been to Washington DC during police week - and most especially if you're a part of the law enforcement community, you should make the time to go. It's a moving experience, even if you don't attend the candlelight vigil. That can make hardened men cry, but the camaraderie and brotherhood (including our sister cops too!) is overwhelming. This week we're going to check out some folding knives from a well-known - but still growing - knife manufacturer: SOG. A couple weeks back, my good friend Al Garcia provided us with an overview of some of the SOG fixed blade knives that have a high usage rate for soldiers and law enforcement special operations personnel. I'm sure there are also quite a few on hunters, hikers and campers belts or backpacks. Still, the fixed blade knife just isn't going to be accepted on a police officer's gunbelt - and that is where the folders come in. Sure, the SOG folder would also be great in the pocket of that soldier, hunter, hiker, camper or cop - but as a police officer myself, I tend to view the utility use of knives from that perspective. http://www.blackwaterusa.com/btw2004/articles/0517frank.html
