**FROM THE EDITOR:**
Good morning,

FEATURE LETTER THIS WEEK....
THE HOME FRONT
What do you think of when you see a soldier? For many of us, the image of GI Joe (or Jane) is one- or two-dimensional at best. We see the uniform, the snappy salute, the pride; we see the sense of duty and honor that soldiers wear like just another ribbon on their chests. All of it fits them like a glove. It's one of the big reasons why young men and women go into the service in the first place.
But as with any two-dimensional image, it isn't complete. Our soldiers are ordinary folks, with ordinary lives. They have families to support, mortgages or rent to pay, cars and homes that need fuel or repairs or insurance. They have kids who need to be gotten off to school in the morning and helped with homework at night. They all have the same mundane cares and concerns as the rest of us do. Soldiers aren't Superman or Captain America; they aren't even Arnold Schwarzenegger or Jean-Claude Van Damme. They're us, plain and simple.
Read the rest here and check out "the good guys", a fairly comprehensive list of American Companies that go above and beyond in support of Americas armed forces.

Up Against Fanaticism
By Phil Lucas, Executive Editor, Panama City New Herald
If straight talk of savagery offends you, if you believe in ethnic and gender diversity but not diversity of thought, or if you think there is an acceptable gray area between good and evil, then turn to the funny pages, and take the children, too. This piece is not for you.
We published pictures Thursday of burnt American corpses hanging from an Iraqi bridge behind a mob of grinning Muslims. Some readers didn't like it.

DEATH-WIND
Capt. Jason E. McNully, CAP
www.auxiliarypower.org
On March 19, 1995, five 2 person teams entered the Tokyo subway during rush hour. They dropped bags of liquid Sarin on the floor, punctured them with sharpened umbrellas and beat a hasty retreat. In the ensuing mass reaction 12 people died, 500 had severe symptoms, and another 5000 were exposed. The murderous chemical attack was carried out by an obscure doomsday cult called the AUM Shinrikyo.

ISLAMIC FUNDAMENTALISTS... The Mirror of Fallujah
BY VICTOR DAVIS HANSON
No more passes and excuses for the Middle East.
What are we to make of scenes from the eighth-century in Fallujah? Random murder, mutilation of the dead, dismemberment, televised gore, and pride in stringing up the charred corpses of those who sought to bring food to the hungry? Perhaps we can shrug and say all this is the wage of Saddam Hussein and the 30 years of brutality of his Baathists that institutionalized such barbarity? Or was the carnage the dying scream of Baathist holdouts intent on shocking the Western world at home watching it live? We could speculate for hours.

BREAKING NEWS FOR THE PROFESSIONAL

Speak softly, carry a big gun
Into the hinterland with the Special Forces

KANDAY, AFGHANISTAN--The elders arrive at the shura shortly after 9 a.m., from villages that don't appear on any military map. Taking seats on the wool carpet, they sip tea, stroke their beards, and work prayer beads through scarred fingers. They have come to see the two men in pakul hats sitting cross-legged at the end of the mud-brick room, their M-4 rifles leaned against the crumbling windowsill.

Confidential or Criminal?
It's the content of the documents that counts.

Leaking is a way of life in Washington. It could perhaps be said that leaking is the fuel that keeps the city running. Everyone in public life, myself included, has been embarrassed by leaks put out by people who disagree with policy or who otherwise want to blow a whistle. Leaks are rarely investigated, because if they were the activities of both the government and the Washington Post - provided Republicans are embarrassed - would grind to a halt. And because few leaks are actually prohibited by law.

When a Young Person Commits a Crime A look at what happens in juvenile court.
"Juvenile justice" is an umbrella term for the special procedures set up by every state to deal with young people whose cases belong in juvenile court. Juvenile courts handle most ofthe cases in which young people (usually called "juveniles" or "minors") are accused of committing crimes. Of course, the treatment of juveniles differs from state to state, judge to judge, cop to cop. And if differences of opinion generally exist about "getting tough on crime," the conflicting opinions on how to deal with minors accused of crimes are greaterstill. Not every young person who commits an offense ends up in juvenile court. A police officer who suspects that a minor has committed a crime may:

When do interrogators cross the line?
Experts weigh in on what constitutes illegal abuse

When do interrogators cross the line between what is acceptable questioning and illegal abuse? And what constitutes torture? International law experts say stripping a prisoner, except to remove weapons, is forbidden. Is that torture? According to Robert Goldman, international law professor at American University, "It certainly constitutes cruel and degrading treatment by any standard. Yes, that would be prohibited."

Bin Laden allegedly offers bounties for officials
Large gold rewards for deaths of Bremer, Annan, others

A statement attributed to Osama bin Laden offered rewards in gold Thursday for the killings of top U.S. and U.N. officials in Iraq. The 20-minute recording, dated Thursday, appeared on two Web sites known for militant Islamic messages. The voice sounded like that of bin Laden, and the words were laden with Quranic verse, but a senior U.S. intelligence official told NBC News that the authenticity of the recording could not immediately be verified.

New York Suitcases Spur Terror 'Dry Run' Fears
Police fear five empty suitcases left at Penn Station, New York FBI headquarters and other security hot spots in early April were a test by terrorists bent on a Madrid-type attack on commuter rails, The Post has learned.
A confidential Metropolitan Transit Authority police bulletin, titled "Possible Surveillance Testing Tactics," reveals K-9 cops are on edge over a "suspicious packages pattern" they encountered between the last week of March and the first week of April.

Analysis: Bin Laden plays divide and rule
By offering a "truce" to Europeans if they pull troops out of Muslim nations, Osama bin Laden is maneuvering, with canny timing, to split the U.S.-led coalition and scare wavering members out of Iraq.
Security analysts said a purported bin Laden audiotape broadcast on Arab television showed al Qaeda further refining tactics seen in last month's Madrid bombings of trying to force political U-turns in countries backing the U.S. "war on terror."

FRANKS REVIEW

BlackHawk CQC Holsters

BlackHawk Products Group, also known as BlackHawk Industries, is well known in the military and law enforcement communities for the wide variety of equipment that they provide.  BlackHawk has recently released a new line of holsters and accessory pouches that are quite innovative.  The CQC (Close Quarters Concealment) holsters are different from anything I've ever seen before and look to be quite useful for both communities on and off duty.

Before I get too far into the review of the BlackHawk CQC holsters, I feel the need to address a concern that has been brought to my attention.  I've received a couple of inquiries questioning the outlook of my reviews.  "How come you never write anything bad about products?" asked one gentleman.  "Are you writing good reviews simply to get free stuff?" another - well, I won't call him a gentleman.  Here is the reality:  If I get a piece of equipment to test and it turns out to be pure junk, I return it to the manufacturer and simply won't write anything at all.  Why provide them the advertisement of their product, even if I'm writing something bad?  That just gives them exposure.  Further, if I find a problem with a product - and I certainly have in the past - that is otherwise a good item, I'll contact the manufacturer to make sure that they're aware of the problem and see if they're working a solution.  In the past, I have done that frequently and will cite such issues in reviews.  The most recent example I can think of was the Wellsmade holsters that I reviewed.  The Glock 19 holster had issues with the thumb strap snap that Wellsmade efficiently addressed and corrected.  No manufacturer is perfect, but how well they deal with mistakes made - how supportive their Customer Support section really is - matters too.  Sometimes it matters more than the design of the product.  After all, much of the equipment we use in harsh environments is expected to break down, wear out and require replacement or repair.  How well the manufacturer supports that need is every bit as important as how well they produced the original item.  So, for those of you who were wondering: Yes, I have received equipment to review that I refused to write up simply because it wasn't worth having.  No, you won't see me dedicate a weekly review to bashing a bad piece of equipment simply because there's a better way to use that space.  Pay attention to the reviews I do because if I take issue with an item, it will be addressed along with the manufacturer's response to my issue(s).
