    QUOTE OF THE WEEK
"War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself"
    John Stewart Mill

    Fight Crime. Shoot back!

"The Marine Corps and Psychotherapy" by Fred Reed

Tell you what; I've had it with whiners. Further, if I hear the phrase "self-esteem" again, I'm going to kill something. It'll happen. Just wait. Some New Age psychotherapeutically babbling little parsnip is going to gurgle to me about how arduous his life is, when he probably doesn't have a life to begin with, and about how it's somebody else's fault, probably mine, and his self-esteem is all bruised and rancid and has warts on it. And I'm going to stuff him into a concrete mixer. No, wait. I've got a better idea. I'll pack him off instead to Marine Corps boot camp at Parris Island, in the festering mosquito swamps of South Carolina.

    Subject: EQUIPMENT TIPS
Some tactical equipment tips from a recent SOF deployer. Thoughts on equipment and stuff:

  • Armor Pointblank has gotten it right with Interceptor modular armor. You can set it up exactly how you need it. There is a pouch available for everything. It's light enough to wear all day but still stay manuverable. No more ungainly assault vests to go over your armor resticting you. Everyone here really likes it. And it will take hits and keep going. There are more extremity wounds now than ever before because it is saving lives by protecting torso's. The ceramic plates weigh 1/4 what the ones I got in 97 weigh. They are rated to 4 hits of .308.

Decision navigation: coping with 21st-century challenges in tactical decisionmaking

AS HE TUTORED the young Alexander the Great, the Greek philosopher Aristotle challenged Alexander by asking what he would do in a given situation. Alexander said that it would depend on the circumstances. Aristotle described a hypothetical set of circumstances and repeated the question. Alexander replied, "I cannot tell until the circumstances arise."

Clearly, Aristotle's young student, who would become the most successful battlefield commander or "battle captain" in history, understood that no plan could fully anticipate or capture the unique conditions and circumstances surrounding every decision during battle. Alexander understood that decisionmaking must be intuitive and evolve as the battle unfolds.

    Police Group Sues Bulletproof-Vest Makers
A law enforcement coalition is suing the manufacturers of bulletproof vests that many police agencies believe lose effectiveness over time, failing to protect as promised. The National Association of Police Organizations is seeking up to $310 million and class-action status in lawsuits filed Thursday in Florida and Michigan. The lawsuits come five months after the Justice Department announced an investigation into the vests, which were sold to as many as 100,000 law enforcement officers.

Devices made to fit in corner mailboxes undetected

Bags of undelivered mail found in a motel trash bin led to the discovery of metal traps apparently mass manufactured to fit perfectly inside street-corner postal collection boxes. North Korea says standoff with US at "brink of nuclear war"
North Korea said Friday the standoff over its atomic ambitions was on the brink of nuclear war as US Vice President Dick Cheney headed to the region for talks with key Asian allies.
The Stalinist state's official news agency accused Washington of "driving the military situation on the Korean peninsula to the brink of a nuclear war" with plans for a pre-emptive strike on North Korea.

Sporadic battles amid Fallujah cease- fire
U.S. Apache helicopter shot down west of Baghdad

Gunmen shot down a U.S. attack helicopter during fighting in western Baghdad on Sunday, and the fate of its two-member crew was unknown. Insurgents and Marines called a cease-fire in the besieged city of Fallujah, though the fragile peace was shaken by a gunbattle that wounded two Americans.

Pre-9/11 Secret Briefing Said That Qaeda Was Active in U.S.
The classified briefing that President Bush received 36 days before the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks reported that the Al Qaeda terrorist network had maintained an active presence in the United States for years, was suspected of recent surveillance of federal buildings in New York and could be preparing for domestic hijackings.
But the briefing did not point to any specific time or place of attack and did not warn that planes could be used as missiles.
After releasing the "President's Daily Brief" on Saturday evening, White House officials said that none of the information given to the president at his ranch in Texas on Aug. 6, 2001, was later found to be related to the attacks. But the page-and-a-quarter-long document showed that Mr. Bush was given more specific and contemporary information about terrorist threats than the White House had previously acknowledged.

Iraq Insurgents Threaten to Kill American
Insurgents who kidnapped an American civilian threatened in a videotape released Saturday to kill and mutilate him unless U.S. forces withdraw from the city of Fallujah.
Meanwhile, insurgents holding three Japanese hostage said they would be freed in 24 hours. The captors had threatened to burn the civilians alive unless Japan pulled its troops out of Iraq, a demand Japan refused.

    FRANKS REVIEW

    PACA & Blackhawk:  Working Together

I don't usually get to test more than one product at a time.  However, this week's review is going to cover a body armor system from P.A.C.A. Body Armor and pouches from Blackhawk Industries.  "What do those two have to do with each other?" you ask.  Well, let me tell you...

Back in January I enjoyed the ASLET Conference in St. Louis.  The exhibitor's hall was the most fun for me (as well you can imagine).  I made the rounds, stopping at every exhibit to introduce myself, find out who was who and what they produced.  I was happy to find a familiar face at the Blackhawk Industries booth, and the gentleman that I knew there introduced me to another guy - who was the PACA representative on hand for the conference.  In conversation about both companies and what they were doing that was new and/or different, it came to light that PACA had begun manufacturing a carrier for a tactical body armor system and that the carrier accepted equipment pouches made by Blackhawk Industries.

The vest from PACA is from their tactical line and is the Model SV-2.  Billed as having "more custom features than any other tactical vest on the market", the SV-2 must certainly match that claim with all the variations in coverage, fit and pouch configuration that are available.  Before we get into the myriad varieties of pouches that are available for operator selection, let's dig into the vest.
