  • Good Morning

As we continue with the new format I am finding small problems. I have added the address of each link as well as the link, certain browsers and permissions were not allowing the readers to link to the article. I have also reinstituted the archive and you will be able to read this weeks BTW on-line at http://www.blackwaterusa.com/new/btwarchive. html.

Incredible feedback on the LA Times cartoon. Thank you for all your e-mails to the editor of the Times.

In Iraq's Murky Battle, Snipers Offer U.S. a Precision Weapon
    By ERIC SCHMITT
SAMARRA, Iraq, Dec. 28 - The intimate horror of the guerrilla war here in Iraq seems most vivid when seen through the sights of a sniper's rifle. In an age of satellite-guided bombs dropped at featureless targets from 30,000 feet, Army snipers can see the expression on a man's face when the bullet hits. http://www.blackwaterusa.com/bt w2004/articles /0112sniper.html

    Eulogy For a Fighter Pilot
COLONEL DON CONROY'S EULOGY, by his son Pat Conroy
The children of fighter pilots tell different stories than other kids do. None of our fathers can write a will or sell a life insurance policy or fill out a prescription or administer a flue shot or explain what a poet meant. We tell of fathers who land on aircraft carriers at pitch- black night with the wind howling out of the China Sea. Our fathers wiped out aircraft batteries in the Philippines and set Japanese soldiers on fire when they made the mistake of trying to overwhelm our troops on the ground.. http://www.blackwaterusa.com/btw 2004/articles/0112fighter.html

New Technology and Old Police Work
    By James Markey
The Phoenix Police Department implemented a new initiative based on a multidisciplinary approach to help solve cold sex crime cases.
In 2001, when the court system convicted a serial rapist of multiple sexual assaults in both Arizona and Florida, a new dawn began for his victims. During cross- examination, victim after victim described how their lives had been changed forever. The rapist's life sentence, though, finally gave his victims the chance to return their lives to normalcy. Many victims had experienced dramatic life changes, and they had been waiting months, or even years, for a conviction. The credit for arriving at this point goes first to the victims for surviving and never giving up hope and, second, to the detectives who diligently pursued these cases while employing new technology to uncover the guilty suspect.

Drugging the Troops Many U.S. soldiers are being treated with a malaria drug that can cause psychotic episodes. Is this a good idea?
Jan. 9 - My bad drug trip happened back in the mid-1990s. I was on call for the Department of Defense press-pool rotation. In the event of pressing military action, this pool of reporters would be activated and sent somewhere top secret. I never really expected to be mobilized, but I kept a bag packed and my pager at my bedside just in case. It went off one morning about 4:30.

"Military Studies in the Jihad Against the Tyrants...Terrorism Bible"
"The 180-page volume, seized from the Manchester, England home of a bin Laden disciple, offers jihad members guidance on subjects such as assassination, forging documents, and preparing poisons in its 18 chapters. The terrorism manual was placed into evidence last year by prosecutors during the federal trial of four men accused of involvement in the 1998 bombing of U.S. embassies in Kenya and Tanzania (the below English translation was also placed in evidence). All four defendants were convicted and sentenced to life in prison."

INSPECTOR O'NEILL: THERE WAS NO EVIDENCE OF WMD
New York - Discussing the case for the Iraq war in an interview with TIME's White House correspondent John Dickerson, former Treasury Secretary Paul O'Neill, who sat on the National Security Council, says the focus was on Saddam from the early days of the Administration. He offers the most skeptical view of the case for war ever put forward by a top Administration official. "In the 23 months I was there, I never saw anything that I would characterize as evidence of weapons of mass destruction," he told TIME. "There were allegations and assertions by people. But I've been around a hell of a long time, and I know the difference between evidence and assertions and illusions or allusions and conclusions that one could draw from a set of assumptions. To me there is a difference between real evidence and everything else. And I never saw anything in the intelligence that I would characterize as real evidence." TIME's new issue will be on newsstands Monday, Jan. 12th.

    FRANKS REVIEW
    "R Squared" Custom Gun Refinishing

In the December 29th "Frank's Review" I included a picture of my Remington 870 which currently sports a two-tone finish of OD Green and Black.  The black parts are plastic or synthetic and the OD Green color is the receiver, barrel, magazine tube, magazine extension and front sling swivel.  In that article, for the curious, I let it be known that the OD Green finish was a custom gun finish available from Rob Russell Custom Gun Finishing.  Otherwise known as "R Squared" (RR - get it?), Rob Russell uses a material called DuraCoat to apply his unique custom patterned (if desired) finish to weapons.
